2024 Recruiting Thread

Is that a possibility?

I think LVs should put together a 6 figure NIL deal if we need to. She's that important IMO.
Going to be a lot of schools bid on her. Don't think Vandy can stay in the game. I know LSU has the money we can't let them win these battles.

Doesn’t speak to anything. We got out bid on a few kids. That’s the landscape now.

Recruiting is also just different. I maintain it’s now more like free agency with the pros. You’re going to build your best roster every season with recruits and transfers. Just how it is.

Looking at the best teams across the country they are almost all bolstered by impact, veteran transfers. I’ll take a Rickea or Alexus Dye type player out of the portal every day of the week over a high school player 🤷🏼‍♂️
Maybe, maybe not...I would feel a lot more optimistic if most of the other top teams had ZERO recruits as well...ONE last year and ZERO this year 🤔

This year (2024) is pivotal. If we can land 3 top 100 recruits then the 22 and 23 classes cause no concern. If we get 0 or only 1, we in big trouble. If we get 2 non-elite recruits, still trouble, but 2 elite recruits, we can probably make that work. Two elite recruits per year is all that is really needed - use the portal to fill in role players around them.

The league average in the WNBA is 100,000. She's a great player but offering college recruits that kind of money isn't sensible or sustainable, in my opinion.

Different market. The NIL function will set its own market. Some schools will handle the transition successfully, others will refuse to embrace it.

Remember, ole folks the obsession for the players from that Hamilton private high school. THe LVs got one of the six players. She and all the others transferred from their original university, one twice.

I personally question, whether now or in the future women, who select primarily on the NIl factor will be finalists for LVs. Nor can I understant when two white blond twins with medium and marginal basketskills have deals over a million based on their media. summary: what do I know? and similarly what do any of the others on this board know?

How many fans do the LVs have? What are the TV ratings for LV games compared to the W? Why shouldn't Lady Vols earn as much as WNBA?

That's a great question - what is the TV ratings comparison between the Lady Vols and the WNBA? I have no idea. I don't think I've ever seen regular season viewership totals for a season, but now I want to go find some to see what the answer is, especially for teams like UT, LSU, South Carolina, UConn, etc. I've seen March Madness stuff, ESPN's always touting those, but never much regular season data. I'd also love to know how much viewership they get through the online apps and streaming. It'd be neat to know how that's shifted.

Anyway, back to the point, considering that the program gravitates between breaking even and losing money, and that most of them do not make money, I'm not sure why a high school recruit should be getting that kind of money. It's an overbid that doesn't seem to track with the fiscal reality of the situation. I suppose big donors could - and I'm sure some are - just blow cash on it if they felt like it. But it'd still feel like an overbid to me.

Don't misunderstand me now. If I win that lottery tonight, I promise you I will take care of this problem. I'm not begrudging people getting paid. Hell, I'd become Tennessee's best friend. I'm sure any of us would, in that situation. I just feel like six figure offers in this sport are hard to grasp, especially for new signees.

Now imagine breaking even versus running at a deficit like so many women's basketball programs do across the country. We need to be a top five NIL program or we need to be content with a further decline of the program.

Another point to be made is that NIL does not come from the university budget, in fact it can't by rule. It comes from collectives, businesses, and individuals.

TV ratings...
according to ESPN PR, with Sunday’s game between Tennessee and South Carolina bringing in 876,000 viewers.

The WNBA finals brought in 649,000 viewers.

I know were pushing hard for Bianca Thomas. Cambridge is a mystery to me don't know what she is thinking keep hearing we are not a factor. Berry UConn is her choice if they offer her. Not sure that they will. We got to get some of these players get that NIL money they need.

Berry has an offer to her "dream" school UCONN she received it a fee months back.
Cambridge isn't considering TN unless something has changed
Blanca Thomas is leaning toward her home state school UNC if rumors are true

If we had better ratings on TV than the entire WNBA as a whole entity one would assume a wealthy investor would have put in a bid for an expansion team by now right? There’s a reason that has yet to happen. Sounds great but overall it’s not realistic when it comes to viewership the WNBA gets paid millions .

NIL deals do not have to track with the financial standing of a program. Its about donors wanting to support a team/player recruit and businesses believing that an athlete can provide promotional value. And Women's b-ball is doing well in the NIL market, running 3rd behind football and men's b-ball

Holingshead (sp). will hold this down. I predict a jump for her like we saw with Rae this next year.
I definitely think Jill will be a star. I always said while RJ was the shining star transfer, Jill was the foundational one. I was thinking of a young, very tall transfer true 5 as a back up for Jill. If TK returns, which I believe she will if health allows, we can wait a year on a post. A PG in the portal would also be for backup purposes. I believe Powell will be ok and we have her for 2.

Yes, I also don’t think Miles is going anywhere and have a feeling she will surprise some people when her minutes increase again. Not sure if she’s been mildly injured or is just a victim of the depth chart this season.

She’s got a lot to offer and will continue to improve though.

really what I think we need is a shooting/combo guard player like an Angel Baker or similar. Someone smaller, quicker, loves to score and has no PG dreams. That’s the void for me at the moment.

wonder if some of big donors use it as tax write offs. stores use tv ads tax write off? can donors to nil deals use it as tax write as donateing to schools or students?

Collectives are not charities so no charitable write off.

Now business owners can get a write off for their NIL payment is it has a business purpose. So if I pay Horston to promote my business on social media, yes, I can deduct that.

We need her she could be our next jordy . Next year is looking very scary if Jordy and Rickea do in fact graduate . Hopefully key returns otherwise we’re going to be middle of the pack SEC . Unless we win the portal again ..saving grace[/QU

Call me crazy but I think Jordan returns along with Key. I think we actually may have a shot to keep Rickea as well. I honestly don't think they're in a hurry to leave. Rickea missed half her season last season, so that actually may benefit us. Not to mention that the WNBA pays crappy money and it's not a guarantee that you will been stay on a team; hence the Rennia Davis situation. I think some members of the team seen that and may have deterred them from leaving early when they can stay in extra year. Plus the article Cora Hall wrote for the Sentinel implies that KJH recruited strategically knowing that RJ, JH, and TK has the possibility of returning an extra year. I definitely have my fingers crossed that maybe they will come back

Not quite in line with your post which opined the number of LV followers. The Lady Vols did not attract all 876,000 viewers. If 50% were Lady Vol viewers your tally would be 438,000 Lady Vol fans. That number would be even less if you consider the higher draw would be the #1 ranked defending national champions.
