2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Why isn't there a great swath of support for your side of the argument? My guess is because it is all over the place.

Most simply stated, the original point was that our offense is most effective when there are multiple scoring options. Kencht is awesome, but him being a one-man show while others stand around watching isn't our most effective offense. That isn't a "casual" take. It's common sense. Knecht scored 30+ in eight games this year, and we were 4-4 in those games.

Nothing wrong with admitting that he's awesome and that him going for 30 is exciting to watch and a godsend on those nights when our other players can't throw it in the ocean, but it isn't when we are our most effective, which was the original point that you just seem to want to argue over.

And acknowledging that Purdue running their offense thru Edey isn't analogous at all because of where Edey's shots come from and where Knecht’s shots come from. Throwing the ball to a 7-4 center 3' from the basket is easy money. That well is much less likely to dry up, especially against a team like Tennessee who doesn't have the post personnel to keep up. Purdue intentionally runs thru Edey like that because of the quality of shots and ease with which they get him the ball within 3'. Tennessee incidentally runs the ball thru Knecht because other guys stop hunting shots and he feels the pressure to be the only option when the other four guys become spectators.

All anyone is asking for is that we be a more balanced offense that allows our best scorer to score, but doesn't solely rely on him being the only source of offense so often.
No argument here

There's a few solid PGs, I think Mack is the best option.

Jordan Pope from Oregon State, 6'2" 2 years shot over 42% FG in both seasons and 37% 3PT while scoring 12.6 and then 17.6, also grabbed 2.6 rebounds a game both years and was good for 3.4 apg.

Ty-Laur Johnson from Louisville, 6'0" 3 years was an 8.7 ppg, 3.6 apg guy off the bench in only 23 minutes. Shooting from deep was awful and drug down his FG% but he was a top 125 kid and 4 star out of HS. He also shoots well from the FT line so I think his % would go up in a better coaching situation like we have.

Jamarii Thomas from Norfolk State, 6'0" 1 year was a 16.9 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.8 rpg, 2.1 spg guy and a career 38.7 FG%, 35.7% 3PT, 79% FT (he shot over 40% and 38% this past season though)

Khalil Brantley from La Salle, 6'1" 1 year was a 15 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.5 spg this year who shot 38.7% FG and 32.6% 3PT
No offense but do you guys really think we’re going to find a transfer pg to come be a backup?

These two guys are ours to lose at the moment...both going through the NBA process but are both expected to return. Lanier + Thomas. Both are humble high quality character guys who interview extremely well .. Thomas is a much better defender and all around more versatile than Cade... Chaz Lanier is an extremely efficient shooter and bucket getter from all over the court, much more efficient than guys like BJ Freeman. But yeah those are the two guys who we are seeing as favorites to be Vols. Btw I love the forum! I'm glad to be here... Im just a huge basketball guy so I don't follow any other sports. Grateful to be here guys
Welcome!

No disrespect, and I know it's not public info "yet" ... But don't be surprised when DJ + Freddie hit the portal. DJ has all the talent in the world, just got in the doghouse as he wanted to break curfew life of the party guy. He was always sorrowful and respectful to the coaching staff but he won't be back 100%. Freddie FAD Dilione is incredible but Wake Forest may be the spot for him from what I've heard. His defense hurt him more than anything. He's another guy who is extremely talented and will ball out elsewhere. Hes watching his buddy Rob dillingham about to be a lottery pick, but Freddie was putting buckets on his head just last szn in OTE. Again, it's just not the right fit here, defensively he would be behind guys like ZZ Mashack and I think Carr is ahead of him as well as the transfers who will be coming in.

I will wish DJ & Freddie luck and hope for the best for them

play a little, develop under a HOFer in a top 10 program and then take over and have 1-2 more years? Doesn't seem like a tough sell
Idk I think it’s tough sell when usually the transfer wants 30 plus minutes of playing time and we still have Dillione on the roster as a “combo” guard a long with Boswell…

Insider status confirmed!

I think most have expected DJ is gone and Freddie isn't going to surprise anyone, he's already one of the higher NIL guys and if he pushes for more or some sort of playing time guarantee I'm sure "you'll have to go somewhere else for that" will be the reply.

I am curious if we announce portal commitments before or after our on roster guys make their decisions.

I think it depends. If it’s a guy transferring from a small program or a guy that can play the 2 as well, it would be appealing. I’m not talking about a star point guard starting for a major program who just plays PG, but maybe a combo guy who can play the 1 full time when ZZ leaves or a guy who may not be getting a ton of minutes anyway and wants to develop and is thinking long term.

Yeah, people have been saying for weeks those 2 are likely gone.

really wanted to see freddie stick it out for another year, vescovi was not a very good defender at all when he arrived & then turned into one of the best. hope he balls out at wake forest or wherever he goes.

If the staff wants one they'll bring one in, ZZ has 1 year left and we have no other PGs on the roster OR incoming.
Thought our lone signee was a combo guy who was working to become more of a lead/point guard?

Did I miss it? Is he in the portal?

That sucks. But nature of today. Kid is good and will be good somewhere. So Freddie and Dj (more then likely) are gone. Leave 4 spots. Interesting see how the staff goes

Might have the spots, but what's the budget?
