2024 Transfer Portal Thread

I still believe that from the goal of making it to the NBA Aidoo would be best served to transfer to a school where he is the focus. He is a stretch 4 at the next level he needs to develop that game as opposed to the inside game that Barnes wants from his 5s. That not to say I want him to leave..if he does I think Tobe and JP will easily replace his production and may increase the rebounding. Tobe has a chance to be a double double guy if he stays outta foul trouble
Baring a miraculous offseason transformation, I don’t see any way Aidoo becomes a stretch 4 regardless of whether he stays or transfers to another program. I’ve just seen nothing in his skill set or athleticism that makes me think he can suddenly become that type of player. I like him and really hope he stays. I think he can make incremental improvements in his offensive game heading into his senior year but he is who he is at this point imo.

From Basilio's blog this morning:

Adieu To Aidoo?
Tennessee is monitoring and massaging Jonas Aidoo and his status behind the scenes as you read this. He's weighing the number of minutes available on a roster where he's going to share minutes at the five position with Estrella and Awaka. Tennessee has flat prioritized the latter two guys in terms of ramping up their roles in 2024-2025. There's not going to be a ton of minutes to go around. Plus Aidoo (who really enjoys being at Tennessee) has been seen as a potential transfer portal prize a la Hunter Dickinson from last spring. Again Aidoo greatly enjoys playing at Tennessee but is weighing what could turn into a diminished role next season versus cashing in with the NIL market. Tennessee obviously doesn't want to lose him but will they fight for him in the NIL space. The guess here is it's going to be hard to keep those guys together ..

Tennessee Has Four Spots:
Expect wildcards to emerge come Thursday as Tennessee has had a couple of names matriculate their way that they weren't expecting. This is going to be very interesting. Of the four spots one will be occupied by a guard and Chaz Lanier of North Florida is pegged here once his NBA flirtation plays out. The next will be a Triple J replacement ... Saint Thomas of Northern Colorado along with Eric Dailey Jr of Oklahoma State is another to watch along with Darlinstone Dubar of Hofstra is thought to be somewhat in play for this role as well. The next piece will be someone to fill the Dalton Knecht role. The first place they're going to go is Cade Tyson from Belmont (target #1 in the portal) and whomever else might emerge out of the woodwork. The fourth spot is probably going to go to a prep player who they could grow into a spot without playing time expectations.

Lanier, Thomas, Dubar, and Dailey pls.

You don’t see him as a stretch 4 even though he has shown the ability to shoot from 18+?

We need to figure out a way to have 2 of our bigs on the court together part of the time. If Aidoo could be a dependable 15’+ shooter then we could make it work IMO. Both him and Awaka are competent perimeter defenders already.
If you say we find a way to play 2 bigs 50% of the time, Thad means 60 available minutes for those 4 post guys. I think Aidoo/Awaka/Estrella all have a desire to play 20+mpg next year for various reasons, and rightfully so, that isn’t possible, and that’s without even mentioning Cade. I don’t want to lose Aidoo either, but between given it’s his last year and Awaka has 2 left, while Estrella has 3 left, it feels like if one has to go it may be him.

Define ability….
If you're at the games, he drains his jumpers at warmups. He also shares video of his jumpers on social media -- probably because he realizes it needs to be seen by NBA scouts. We all see him struggle with it in the games, though. I'd love to see him figure out an Anthony Davis type game where he can use his athleticism and start hitting his shots.

Cade Tyson is my number 1 want and who I believe is our number 1 need. There is not another DK out there... but man does this kid give me those vibes. He doesn't have DK's athlethism or that silky smooth looking jumpshot, but he shoots a career 44.6% from three! Just what our team needs. Plus he still has two more years of eligibility left.

You gotta think that he sees what Barnes did with DK and wonder if he could do the same for him.

As a Sixer fan who loved Bobby Jones, he was actually an excellent offensive player - solid, consistent jumper and an elite finisher on the break - but he accepted his role on those Sixer teams as the 6th man, defensive stopper, and Jack of all trades. BJ didn't start, but he closed every game.
I went to FCA camp in black mountain around 1990 and one day had Bobby Jones on my team in pickup ball. He was probably in his 40s and was absolutely unstoppable, nba talent is on another level, even if you're not considered a superstar. Also in my small group that week was Jeff Capel from Duke. Needless to say we didn't lose any basketball games that week.

Just spouting stuff that's been posted on this board and others for the last couple of weeks. Geez Basilio. At least have some integrity and give attribution.

I would prefer another shooter rather than all 3 of those, they feel similar to me, Tyson over Thomas or Dailey would be nice.
For me, I see Carr, Lanier and Tyson as being our best path forward offensively. Use the spots left to add where there's most need. Pie in the sky would be a Mack and a JJJ type.

Why are people acting like it’s a forgone conclusion that we are getting Lanier and Saint Thomas? I want that to be true, but I gotta see some pretty good evidence that both are likely before I get too excited. Any chance any of these guys come in for the spring game this weekend?

I think Dubar might be the most likely (other than Lanier)

I think he has some familiarity with a staff member. Not 100% sure, but I’m sure they’ve at least crossed paths in the past. (Both being from Charlotte)

@bleedingTNorange do you know if Dubar and Grad Assistant Kasanganay have any history?

I agree Aidoo has a nice stroke and could be a good outside shooter. I think his issue is confidence and opportunity to do it in games consistently. Maybe a different team could help him in that scenario. Kind of the same reason he bobbles some passes. He is thinking to much and not just playing with confidence.

I also think there is a pretty big difference in a center occasionally hitting a three when the opposing center drops off and gives him some space versus a stretch 4 that moves around on the perimeter and needs to knock them down consistently against opposing 4's with a hand in their face.

Fwiw Uros also hit 3’s in warmups…I’m with you that the stroke appears there and that his highlight videos show an ability, however in 3 years of on court data he’s yet to show that ability.

Don’t know about that…but Dubar is from Charlotte as you mentioned and he played for BMaze’s AAU program, so he’s been in and around Knoxville plenty as well as many members of the current and former Vol teams as they often play pickup with a lot of those guys.

So I'd sort the team into 3 sections.

Section 1 = quick guards with handles
ZZ, Bishop, Gainey

Section 2 = wing players with length
Mashack, Carr

Section 3 = bigs
Aidoo, Awaka, JP, Cade

So like bTo and others have pointed out it seems like we're set on bigs even if 1 hits the portal and we're targetting some in next year's class of 25.

We really need to add 2 or 3 guys to section 1/2. Dubar, Tyson, Saint Thomas are all Section 2 players and Lanier is a Section 1 player
