2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Losing both Aidoo and Awaka, our only two experienced bigs, would be a disaster. Hope we survive the next 21 hours. I’m not in the mood to rebuild next year, I want to reload and make another push for a final four. Losing 5 of our top 7 contributors from this year would mean a complete roster makeover and would significantly lower expectations for me.

We’re walking a tightrope with Aidoo and Awaka. Got to get through tomorrow before I feel good.
This is all just insane. Dilione and Jefferson, understandable as they weren't contributors and had no assurances that next year would be any different. Makes sense why they would look elsewhere. If either Aidoo or Awaka leave, unless for family-related issues, that would be extremely disappointing. I would just hate it for our program and college basketball. Trying to build and maintain a culture within the program becomes meaningless.

Technically, every year is a rebuild year for most teams.

Especially this day & time with NIL and the transfer portal.

Players staying 4 years at the same school is a thing in the past now.

Mind shooting me a link to this? I have some interest.

I wouldn’t say we are typically one of “most teams” though. We have taken the approach of supplementing our experienced core with portal players, rather than mostly building through the portal like everyone else. That is part of the reason we were so successful this year, it was basically the same team as last year, but with two total players that added some scoring.

I like the stability of our program right now. I would hate to see us basically starting from scratch for 2024-2025 with ZZ and Maschack being really the only two experienced players that have been around the program multiple years.

I think right now, the meta is international players.

Since they can’t take advantage of NIL as easily, you can get and keep international players easier than most.

Yep, plus if they leave school they'd have to leave the country and even if they transfer they'd likely deal with visa complications.

Carr has the mentality of the former High School MVP playing rec games at the Y in his 30’s. He gonna shoot it whether it’s a good idea or not lol
Part of it annoys me and then I think of how mad I got when Santi passed on open shots. I know one game Carr can in he was going to try to hang 40 in the last 5 minutes of the game. Dude was shooting like his life depended on it. I think that mentality paid off against Creighton. Lots of guys in his position would let the moment get to them. It didn’t seem to bother him at all.

This is a good point. Mashack's offensive issues may be more mental than actual ability. If he starts thinking like an offensive threat he may become one.
Hoping next seasons team will have more balance scoring. Knecht's scoring was much needed this season. Perhaps Mashack will have more opportunities this fall.

This is Zeigler + Mashacks team now, they will be the two main vocal leaders anyone transferring in will fall in line by the example b4 them. I see the scoring concerns on here, but I was talking with Mashacks family (mother d1 athlete, dad d1 1k+ point scorer, sister a D1 track star now, & brother D1 AZ football player) Jahmai has played a "role" at TN - behind two 5 year players. he can score. Think of Rodman - averaging 26 points in college, but in the NBA he found his niche. Players around him can score as well, so he done what he knew to do to best help the overall success of the teams he played on ; hustle rebound, defend. now as a Sr I see Mashack at 8-9 points a game similar to Yves Pons Sr year. Biggest difference with those two Mashack is the superior on ball defender and Yves was Mr. block. Mashack has been the most selfless of all the players on the team imo.

Overall I see this 37 points left by the 3 seniors fairly easy to cover. It won't only be covered by transfers, but those returning will pick up production. Let's say hypothetically we have a 9 man rotation every game instead of 8 and no one else leaves our team in the portal. That gives us:

🍊Rotation🍊
Sr Zeigler
Sr Mashack
Sr Gainey
Sr Aidoo
Jr Awaka
So Carr
So Estrella
Portal guy 1
Portal guy 2

With hypothetically that leaving guys like Cade Phillips + Boswell + whoever else we pick up at the end of the bench playing in half the games or less on the season.

Gainey is not a 1 or 2 option imo and real inefficient overall, so I see his points the same.

Zeigler + Aidoo could average 1.5 extra points a game each - so there's 3 points!

Mashack + Awaka let's say they both add 4 more points a game each - so there's 8 points! And we're at 11 extra points total now.

Let's say Carr + Estrella put up Awaka + Mashack numbers offensively from this past year. So let's just say +4 points from each of them and that's another 8 points. And we are at 19 extra points now - and all of those points are covered by guys returning (hypothetically of course!)

That leaves 18 extra points being left by JJJ, Vescovi + Knecht to be covered. Do we all believe that two good skilled offensive transfers can combine for 18 points a game? I think so.

And I see a lot of people in here saying that we cannot expect to get another Knecht... The 3 best overall players (extremely efficient) in the SEC this year were all from smaller teams in the portal. (Mark Sears, Antonio Reeves & Dalton Knecht.)

We are a hotspot and I think it's possible that our number one go to scorer will be from the portal again while our 2nd & 3rd leading scorers are Zeigler & Aidoo.

Plus, Zeigler could become #1 all time easily in steals as a senior, maybe halfway through the year. But his mom says he's already working towards the championship already and she told me that she believes he could become the all-time leading assist man for Tennessee. If we play 37 games next year like we done this year Zeigler would need to average 6.6 assist a game to break that record. But he will need some more reliable shot makers to pass it to...

We can and will cover those 37 extra points as a team. I know I rambled and if you had the chance to read all of this, thank you. But we will have a good team. And we will have some productive transfers. Let's go VOLS 🍊 🍊 🍊

Great post. We definitely need a guy who can create on his own when the clock winds down or we need a bucket. Lanier and Thomas (or Tyson) seem to have that ability. Would be good to get two of them. I like current depth and rotation at the 4 & 5 and expect we will play a bigger lineup a lot next year which should help on the glass. Having a combo forward like Thomas/Tyson gives us flexibility.

Still would like another PG who can spell ZZ and create for others. May not be likely.

From Basilio's blog this morning:

Adieu To Aidoo?
Tennessee is monitoring and massaging Jonas Aidoo and his status behind the scenes as you read this. He's weighing the number of minutes available on a roster where he's going to share minutes at the five position with Estrella and Awaka. Tennessee has flat prioritized the latter two guys in terms of ramping up their roles in 2024-2025. There's not going to be a ton of minutes to go around. Plus Aidoo (who really enjoys being at Tennessee) has been seen as a potential transfer portal prize a la Hunter Dickinson from last spring. Again Aidoo greatly enjoys playing at Tennessee but is weighing what could turn into a diminished role next season versus cashing in with the NIL market. Tennessee obviously doesn't want to lose him but will they fight for him in the NIL space. The guess here is it's going to be hard to keep those guys together ..

Tennessee Has Four Spots:
Expect wildcards to emerge come Thursday as Tennessee has had a couple of names matriculate their way that they weren't expecting. This is going to be very interesting. Of the four spots one will be occupied by a guard and Chaz Lanier of North Florida is pegged here once his NBA flirtation plays out. The next will be a Triple J replacement ... Saint Thomas of Northern Colorado along with Eric Dailey Jr of Oklahoma State is another to watch along with Darlinstone Dubar of Hofstra is thought to be somewhat in play for this role as well. The next piece will be someone to fill the Dalton Knecht role. The first place they're going to go is Cade Tyson from Belmont (target #1 in the portal) and whomever else might emerge out of the woodwork. The fourth spot is probably going to go to a prep player who they could grow into a spot without playing time expectations.

Fight to keep Aidoo. 2nd team all sec player. Pay him.

I still believe that from the goal of making it to the NBA Aidoo would be best served to transfer to a school where he is the focus. He is a stretch 4 at the next level he needs to develop that game as opposed to the inside game that Barnes wants from his 5s. That not to say I want him to leave..if he does I think Tobe and JP will easily replace his production and may increase the rebounding. Tobe has a chance to be a double double guy if he stays outta foul trouble

I don’t think Barnes’ offense is the problem. We’ve seen him make that 18 footer pretty consistently and the 3 ball as well. The problem is that for whatever reason, he stopped shooting the 3. We needed more of that this past season to pull the opposing 5 away from the basket.
