2024 WNBA Discussion Thread

How many people on this planet lookand sound like Britney Griner? Who else are you talking about?
Sue Bird presided over a league with a stagnant fan base and basically had to be subsidized to stay in business. The WNBA will fail if most of the league begins to appear and sound like Brittney Griner and less like Candace Parker. Both of those two are gay, one pushes it everyone's face by her mere appearance and conduct and the other has that aspect of her life as only one facet of a more well rounded person. TV is a visual media and the bulk of viewers like what they like. I was reminded recently during the 1960 election debates those who heard on radio Nixon and Kennedy go at each other most thought Nixon clearly won. Those who watched on tv clearly thought Kennedy carried it. One was more pleasant in appearance than the other and the rest is history.
Do you know what false equivalency is? Do you know what sexism is? And I don’t happen to find Angel attractive. I don’t care what a player looks like.

Remy, I think there were deeper issues with Nixon than looks alone.

I am not sure what you are saying exactly. That Brittany Griner was responsible for the WNBA being less popular than it is now? {She is still in the league and remains a high profile player BTW).

FYI, I don't think Griner looked the way she looks to push a gay agenda in your face. She sort of is who she is.

Candace was also in the league before it had a take-off phase last season and this current Caitlin Clark boom period (as was Sue Bird). So, are you saying the visual appeal of CP3 and Kim Bird was single handedly cancelled by BG?

The fact is that all women's sports have seen a big uptick in popularity in the last few years. The growth in women's soccer has matched that of Women's basketball.

Also, women's tennis has had a long run of popularity even when the sport was once was dominated by Martina Navratilova, who was quite open about her sexual orientation and did not try to conform to conventional standards of female beauty.

I used to like Dewanna Bonner but the last season or two she complains SO much. It’s aggravating to watch, she and Thomas got something to say about everything.

Fever need to get some stops at the rim. Boston is not a good rim protector so far this season. Smith as well. They need to woman up in there. Sun just running a layup drill on them.

This Fever team needs someone like Rennie Davis who will go get you a rebound. She’d be a much better player for them than Samuelson.

Katie Lou is a bench player that should be brought in situationally to hit a 3. She’s terrible in every other aspect.

Great game, Fever and Suns, CC with great passes, usually to Boston, and a long 3 that made the crowd go wild. Game close till the end, Boston had a chance to tie the game at the end, but layup didn’t fall in. Exciting game!

Can’t believe they didn’t go to CC for the last shot. Bostons bout to get a lot more hate.
It looked like plan A was for CC to take the last shot but she was being closely guarded and gave the ball up to Boston, who had a decent look.

CC is having a typical rookie season. Her 4th quarter included several great passes leading to five assists, a logo three that blew the roof off but she also had two bad TOs and a lack of composure technical foul at a crucial point in the game.

As a college superstar, she always got the benefit of the doubt calls but that ain't happening now and she needs to adjust to this new reality (plus get a bit stronger because opposing defenders are just out muscling her).

Came for CC but stayed for the next game.

I only watched the Sparks vs Aces, Rickea and Brink have their own supporters that only care for them, so it’s best to keep all of that separate, it has nothing to do with.Clark.

[…] Martina Navratilova, who was quite open about her lifestyle preferences […]
I usually try to limit my comments to basketball, but as a card carrying hetero male I must take strenuous exception to the term “lifestyle”. My wife, female by both sex and gender, and I, boringly male on both counts, have never made a lifestyle choice. We simply are who we are. The same is true for our gay friends. They don't engage in lifestyle preferences; they live honestly as the people they are.

End rant.

I still respect you, MTV, and enjoy reading your posts. Honest, civil disagreement is not enmity.

Hi 1reVoLver, we don't have any disagreement here just a failure on my part to update my cultural references. I should have said sexual orientation.

Did you see that Rickea and Cameron made ESPN Sportscenter for throwing out the first pitch, actually pitches, at the Dodgers game. [Hate to say it but Cameron had the better throw].

The Sparks have the promotion side down with their rookie stars. Now, the coach just needs to giver R.J. more minutes (would not mind seeing Rae get more time as well).

I have a lot of thoughts on there being two professional women’s soccer teams in DC that aren’t relevant here, but I LOVE what Angel is doing to elevate other women’s sports.
It is going to be interesting to see how it plays out with two top division women's leagues. They will play staggered seasons with the NWSL using a March-November schedule and the USL using a European style fall-to-spring calendar.
