Tennessee will host its second official visitor of the fall this weekend, welcoming three-star combo guard Amari Evans to campus. Tennessee seems higher than some on Evans, at least higher than other programs with the recruiting profile that the Vols currently enjoy.

A look at Evans make-up might give some clues as to why the staff is so high on him. At 6-foot-5, 205 pounds he is a big, physical guard very much in the mold of Jahmai Mashack. Evans has a better stroke than Mashack had coming out of high school, but he is not a flashy offensive player at this point in his career. After this weekend’s Tennessee visit Evans has trips scheduled to Ole Miss, TCU and Xavier.

As for last week’s official visitor, Donte Allen, Tennessee may be more in that one than it initially seemed. It was a little bit of a weird situation. They brought him in on a non-football weekend and really only got serious about recruiting him after watching him at the Nike Peach Jam, where he was a teammate of five-star target Caleb Wilson. In talking with Allen after his visit it sort of seemed like he was skeptical about Tennessee due to the late offer.

However, the staff knocked it out of the park on his visit. That experience went a long way towards making Tennessee a serious player. Allen raved about the individual plan and detailed blueprint that the staff had for him from a development standpoint. It was clear to him after the visit that he wasn’t just an after thought but that Tennessee has a spot for him in this class. Now, that doesn’t mean the Vols are the team to beat here or anything, but it does feel like they’re at least factor following the visit.

Tennessee’s staff (and everyone else in college basketball) will hit the road next week as the live period begins on Sept. 4. Look for Tennessee to get into to see Wilson early on. Also, look for the staff to check in next week on Darius Adams and Tounde Yessofou. Both of those prospects will be in town on the Sept. 13th/Kent St. weekend, so Tennessee will likely visit with them ahead of time to ‘soften the beachhead’.

Dewayne Brown moved up to #66 in the latest ESPN 100.
Nice! His film showed lots of defensive promise but the bump implies an improvement on the offensive end too. Imo

I’m all for any player wanting to be a Vol but when they commit early like him, there always feels like more WANT to and more stick to. Also jmo

Tennessee hosted guard Amari Evans on an official visit last weekend and the Vols are certainly in the mix to land him. Evans certainly fits the bill for what Rick Barnes is looking for on the perimeter. He’s a big, physical guard in the mold of Jahmai Mashack, and he uses that frame to his advantage on the defensive end.

Some we’ve spoken to who are familiar with Evan’s game feel like he’s a more polished offensive player was than Mashack at the same stage. Those who watched both as high school prospects give Evans a big edge as a shooter at this point in their development.

Evans took an official visit to Pittsburgh this summer and some view the Panthers as the team to beat, though Evans himself has not given that indication. He still has official visits left to Ole Miss, Xavier and TCU. In our estimation Tennessee is higher on Evans than some others.

The Vols don’t have any official visits set for this weekend, but one of the top 2025 targets, Darius Adams, will be in town next weekend for his official visit. Adams is originally from New Jersey and attends the La Lumiere School in Indiana. He has previously made an unofficial visit to Knoxville.

Wednesday, Sept. 4 was the first day that college coaches could hit the road this semester and Rick Barnes and staff made Adams their first stop on the trial Wednesday morning.

While in Indiana the staff also saw four-star guard Braylon Mullins. Tennessee is high on Mullins, but that one could be a tough pull with in-state Indiana considered the favorite and Kentucky pushing hard as well. Mullins is scheduled to officially visit Tennessee Oct. 19.

Tennessee visited with five-star California prospect Brayden Burries, the No. 14 overall player in the class according to on3. Most seem to think overwhelmingly that Burries will stay out west but Tennessee is taking a swing.

Tennessee was scheduled to host four-star wing Tounde Yessoufou next weekend, the nation’s No. 17 overall prospect according to on3. Yessoufou cancelled his trip to Knoxville coming off of what was apparently a great visit to Baylor last weekend.

Have to wonder with some of these recruits if a school has to promise a certain number of NIL$ to make top 3 / 5 / 6 list? If so, maybe his asking price is higher than UT is willing to go.

Tennessee is hosting a couple of big official visitors this weekend with five star big man Chris Cenac and combo guard Darius Adams scheduled to be in town.

Cenac is the No. 13 overall player in the 2025 class per the On3 Industry Rankings.

Cenac is one we talked about back in the summer where there wasn’t a lot of buzz about Tennessee, but based on the chatter we were hearing it felt like the Vols were ‘lying in the weeds’ here.

LSU and Auburn are very much in play for Cenac, but we think Tennessee is a strong contender. This will be a big visit at the risk of stating the obvious.

No one is suggesting that the Vols are the team to beat here, but they’re more of a factor than some probably thought a month ago.

Cenac is originally from New Orleans—so don’t ignore LSU obviously—but he attends Link Academy in Missouri, the same prep school that current Tennessee players Cam Carr and Cade Phillips attended.

Adams, the No. 19 overall player in the 2025 On3 Industry Rankings, and Cenac are the highest rated targets on the board that Tennessee has nailed down visits with to this point. (the staff is still working No. 4 overall prospect Caleb Wilson).

Adams was at NC State last weekend for his first official visit of this recruiting cycle. In talking with some around his recruitment outside of the Tennessee side of things it doesn’t feel like the Wolfpack gained a lot of traction with Adams last week.

Adams, who previously made an unofficial visit to Tennessee last fall, was the first prospect that Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes visited with last week when coaches could hit the road on Sept. 4th.

Following this weekend’s trip to Knoxville Adams has official visits set up to UCONN, Michigan State, Alabama and Notre Dame.

Suffice it to say, with that list, this isn’t going to be an easy recruitment, but the Vols have been in this one as long as anyone. The staff has been aggressively recruiting Adams since the spring of his sophomore year, and Adams has developed a relationship with associate head coach Justin Gainey.

Adams is more of a scoring guard than a pure point guard, and it looks like Tennessee would like to add a true point in this class.

The Vols are also involved with Charlotte area point guard Isaiah Dennis who Barnes and Gainey visited with last week. Dennis is scheduled to visit Tennessee on Oct. 11, which is currently his last scheduled official visit date.

The No. 62 overall player in the On3 Industry Rankings, Dennis just visited Ohio State and has trips set up to Miami, Michigan, North Carolina and Wake Forest before coming to Knoxville.

Tennessee, Michigan and UNC are all involved with both Lewis and Dennis, so that’s something to keep an eye in both of those recruitments.

Gainey visited with Dennis on Wednesday of this week.

Tennessee also continues to make a late push for five-star California prospect Brayden Burries, the No. 14 overall player in the 2025 class.

Rick Barnes was in California this weekend to visit with Burries and his family. It’s a long distance recruitment, but the Vols do have a tie here. Burries’ mother played softball for Tennessee.

Barnes and Gainey visited with five-star prospect Nate Ament from Manassas, Va. on Tuesday of this week. UNC and Hubert Davis were also in to see Ament on the same day.
