2026 recruiting

kim has said repeatedly in interviews that her team will need to adjust depending on the opponent. i just can't imagine her being ignorant enough to not see or plan for that scenario.
Who will play the 5 in a slowdown game?
Who will be our Power forward?

Jillian is a 6'4' frame with a SF/G mindset
Spearman averaged 6.3 ppg. and 6.0 rpg. starting 10 of 30 games for Miami, who finished 51st in the rankings and ninth in its own conference, the ACC.
No other player over 6'2"

We have no alternative but to play two guards, two small-forwards and one post this year (The next tallest is Sara Puckett and she is not a post-up or paint protector,, mentality player).

This season UT has no choice but to outrun the opposition and we very well MAY
... but after this year the "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me" adage will be in play...the other side of the coin is if some team solves us early on and the SEC can copy their strategy with even more higher skilled and elite athletic players,,,uh oh

I don’t know if that is accurate…. Nolan Richardson might fit but his falling off was due to recruiting. Loyola- Marymount and the Runnin Rebels are two different teams. Loyola had an amazing year in 1990 but didn’t win the championship. The coach also left Loyola to go to the NBA to coach the Nuggets in 1991. The Runnin Rebels which were coached by Tarkanian won the championship. He dominated through 1992 when NCAA violations caused him to leave UNLV. He did resurface at Fresno State and had a decent run as their coach. Overall… In 31 years, Tark won 80% of his games.
My bad
the UNLV runnin rebels and Loyola,,yes diff teams but similar styles
and it was UNLV with LJ that I was talking about

And Freson State is a middle of the pack team,,,not the bottom or the top

UNLV and Loyola were never stopped…. the coaches left for other jobs. I don’t think it will be as easy as you claim to adjust to our style. The offense and defense that she runs are both built on solid principles. We are playing positionless basketball much like Jay Wright did at Villanova.

To be fair, we, “the team”, has yet to step on the court. Lots of speculation going on up in here.

As for the press defense,,,there is a golden rule in BB that has stood for years..."pressing teams hate to be pressed",,,I would press the hades out of Kim's team as an opponent and use 19 of the 20 second shot clock on every possession and frustrate the team and her....Pressing teams hate to be pressed bc that is what they see nearly every day they practice,,,the 2nd team pressing them and familiarity breeds contempt and always has

Got to disagree with you here CJ. Statistical evidence suggests that pressing teams are often more adept at handling full-court pressure due to their constant practice against it. Data from recent NCAA seasons indicates that teams employing a pressing defense have a turnover rate of approximately 14% when faced with an opponent's press, compared to a 17% turnover rate for non-pressing teams under the same conditions. This lower turnover rate underscores their proficiency in ball-handling and decision-making under pressure. Moreover, pressing teams typically capitalize on opponents' pressing attempts by averaging 1.2 points per possession in transition offense, whereas non-pressing teams average around 0.9 points. This means pressing teams not only handle the press better but also turn it into offensive opportunities more effectively. Therefore, attempting to press a pressing team may actually play into their strengths, making it a counterproductive strategy.

It's really common sense, if you practice against pressure defense every day, you learn how to handle it and become more proficient against it.

@volbeast33 nailed the other items I take issue with.

UNLV relied on stifling defense and athleticism to run teams into the ground.

Loyola Marymount played zero defense but had enough scorers to beat you.

Hank Gathers(RIP) and Bo Kimble were great for Paul Westhead's style.

Sigh,,,I was at that time so looking forward to seeing Hank and Bo in the NBA
Now I can't stomach the NBA,,,buncha "don't touch me skirts who only shoot 3s" play now

Man I miss those real "man's man" teams and players...Jordan's Bulls, Magic's Lakers, Larry's Celtics, The Bad Boys of Detroit, Stockton and Malone, Shaq Diesel, The almost terrifying Shawn Kemp,,Charles Oakley

Now, if I want to watch a truly physical game, where a player gets knocked down and doesn't even get a second look from the zebras,,,I have to watch the women NCAA/WNBA games

Sigh,,,,times have sure changed

yep…. that’s why he failed in the pros…. averaged 115 ppg but gave up 130 ppg.

so we have two centers to play in a slow down game then? they are both super talented and athletic too. we've also had plenty of power forwards in the 6'1 to 6'3 range. i don't think it is as black and white as you allege here. not being rude. i just think the panic button isn't even out yet. we have done a FABULOUS job recruiting too. her team will be far better suited to play against the top teams than if no change was made even with a system like hers in place. just my two cents. not the gospel.

not saying push the panic button
in fact, I think we will have a very good season
but like I told a coach recently, "this is Tennessee"
Very good, will keep you out of the fire for a year or two
Those of us who have not moved our goal-post,,,expect "great" ultimately
I am sincerely hoping Kim reaches it

i agree with that. i think she's eyes wide open about the expectations. only time will tell if her approach is suited for the big stage. if not, we know the drill. next.

It's infinitely easier for a quicker, modern 5 (and/or a PF) to slow her game down a bit now and then than it is for an old-school traditional 5 to have to hot-foot it up and down for 40 minutes if she's not used to it.

I like the odds that our bigs will be fine against any type of opponent this season.
