'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Well when UT is dumping $8m into a QB alone that kind of shrinks your pool pretty quick. Tennessee has a really good NIL going but they’re trying to bring football back and that isn’t cheap.
I wonder does it really require $8M? Even at $2M/yr, that’s like 50% more than Ewers and he was the #1 overall prospect in the class. Also, look how that turned out

Who knows…a difference I see in those is that Ohio State wouldn’t struggle at all to get a top flight QB of their choice, Tennessee likely might. If landing Nico results in landing a Top 5 class it probably was worth it.

Tennessee is going to have to overpay for some recruits in the interim until we start winning games. It’s not university money, so if Spyre has the disposable cash from donors I'm fine with it. But, as BTO said, we dont have the luxury of being Alabama or Ohio State, so we have to probably juice the offer just a little bit more to get some of these kids to take a risk.

How do they know who to take the risks on? Part of that big budget go to paying mine readers of the UT staff or they just make up their own mind based on who they know have offers.

A couple things to consider too. The $8 mil isn't guaranteed, but spread out conditional on him still being here I believe. Also, when you land a consensus top 5 player and that player is a QB, you generate the kind of momentum we're seeing around the entire football program right now. I have a feeling it'll be more than worthwhile.

It's not technically conditional on him being at UT, it's contingent upon him making a certain number of appearances in Knoxville each year that would not make sense if her were not at UT. Thought that was a crafty idea.

Good point. Effectively keeping him at UT, while avoiding the explicit connection to the school.

They aren’t reading Josh Heupel’s mind. They are getting feedback on the targets.

Very true but I like how the December football recruiting is shaping up for Coach Heupel and staff.

Getting feedback from Heupel? Is that allowed?

I’m sure there is a middle-man somewhere that relays information from the coaching staff to Spyre. It’s not that outlandish and I think it’s pretty understood that this isn’t entirely without some under the table shenanigans. It’s just part of playing the game.

Considering Phillips and BHH are both power forwards, would him getting in the boat pretty much negate BHH leaving?

But technically not allowed. Does it carry any risk? Is it just bad luck/timing for guys like Will Wade?

My friend texted me to say that Spyre made a “new and material change to the offer, which made staff optimistic”. The combination of his relationship with Traore, and Auburn getting a last minute visit makes my stomach hurt, but my friend said they won’t have time to match what we’ve offered. He also said this will be done by next week.
It’s going to be very hard to overcome the relationship with Traore I feel sadly, I just hate that they are getting what sounds like his last visit

I would like to assume that in the era of NIL a collective getting info on what type of recruits to target is probably the most tame form of “foul play” out there and it’s very unlikely the NCAA is going to police that. This is probably something literally every university is doing now.

The Will Wade allegations and debacle stem from things done before NIL was a thing.

Yeah clearly “everyone’s doing it” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t risk. What is the risk?

So yes, will Wade is the victim of poor timing

Why on Earth Will Wade wouldn't delegate a call like the one that got wiretapped to someone on staff or elsewhere is beyond me. Just clown **** and I feel like you wouldn't be insulated from repercussions even in the NIL era with a folly like that.

Well….the Wade situation also isn’t apples to apples. The allegations include him paying hush money to the girlfriend of a player to keep her quiet about the “strong ass offers” and I have a pretty good feeling that isn’t something Rick Barnes is doing. So, the risk is probably very minimal if you aren’t doing shady crap like that.
