'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

Transfer portal is recruiting, maybe we see how 2023 class goes?
Even if the next class is great, it doesn't lessen that this class hasn't been. I'm not calling for Barnes' head, so bringing up next year's class is a moot point. If we miss on Philips, and Collins, Key, and BJE are it, that's a disappointment coming off the season we just had. That's reality. If those are the only players we land, I just don't see us taking that step forward next year. And that's a shame considering what we're returning. Whatever we add in the next class, we'll also be losing a lot from the roster.

Top 10 season and you “expect” to take a step forward, tough crowd.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make

In fairness, this is the first year of a completely new paradigm. It’s less recruiting and more free agency. Auburn and Arkansas came out ready for this. We didn’t. Danny White understands how money turns into winning, and winning turns into money. They’ll make big adjustments to address things by next year. I think we’ll be good next year season even if we don’t land a big fish like Phillips. Experience is underrated. I like our team. That said, Barnes will have to adjust his methodology. I don’t think this new reality is good for parity, the fans or the game. I believe in paying players, but this Wild West approach will hurt the game. Jay Wright retire five to ten years sooner due to the shift. It may break Barnes too. It’ll be hard for a guy who does things the right way.

Not only Jay Wright. It sounds like Dabo Sweeney probably isn’t long for this new NIL paradigm. With the way he rails on it weekly, I wouldn’t be shocked to see him retire or test the NFL waters (if he can).

There are going to be a lot of old school coaches that just aren’t going to be suited for this “new world order” and the next 3-4 years will settle the waters a bit.

This is a pure hypothetical, but I have a feeling if for some reason we swing and miss on the 2023 class as well, and if a bunch of our top targets go elsewhere due to better NIL packages, Barnes might pull a Jay Wright and hang it up.

There are some college coaches in general who get tired of coddling/catering to 18-22 year olds. Brad Stephens and Billy Donovan were two who got out, and they weren’t even coaches during NIL times. Gary Parrish hosts a local radio show, and he says both were tired of the games you have to play as a college recruiter. I agree that the established coaches will either adjust or retire. We all know with Barnes that he values life more than just coaching basketball.

I think people need to chill over the “recruiting” this year. We have a very solid returning core coming back. And someone posted a video earlier that Barnes is really focused on bringing in players who are up to the standards of the program and are complementary to the roster that we have. That’s exactly the approach he should take.

Yes, a step forward, because we still didn't make it past the first weekend of the Dance. A few key cogs, and I think that's entirely possible to do. I get part of the tournament is luck, but not all of it.

Why, IYO, is Spyre working for FB, but not BB? That's the big question I have. It seems as if Spyre values FB more. I'm not sure if it's a CRB problem, or a Spyre problem. I'll be interested to see what happens with Philips given you and BTO are hearing different things.

Well, because Football is the money maker. It’s pretty simple.

Which, I think if we put the effort into it, basketball has the potential to be even bigger.

……I’m sorry I love Tennessee Basketball but there is not a scenario in this universe where Tennessee Basketball is ever bigger than Tennessee Football. Our fanbase vastly prefers football. Even mediocre football. It’s just the truth.

Pretty much this.

It’ll never change.

Tennessee has been in a historic stretch of administrative ineptitude, poor coaching hires, and extremely bad on the field products and yet even these historically bad football teams garner more interest than basketball here.

It’s just how it is and how it always will be.

Football is trending down. CTE has changed the game of the field. The money grab is altering the rest. With N-I-L and the portal I’m looking at NCAA football as more and more of the minor league for the NFL.

But we’re not a blue blood haven’t you heard?

Yupppp. I care way more about hoops, but the majority of Tennessee fans would rather go 6-6 in football and make a bowl than make the NIT in hoops. It is what it is.
