The cubs batting glove was a link. I never knew about that. And his replacement had one go through the legs. I thought it tied in well. Not much more about bartman could be covered.

They make Buckner out to be a scapegoat and he was. But he was paid to do something and he didn't do it. Bartman was just a fan who may not have interfered with the ball. THey are two totally different situations.

I got a lump in my throat when they showed Bartman wiping the beer off his face. Nobody deserved what he got. Cubs fans get what they deserve.

Same thing happened to me. Seeing him being the only one sitting down and everyone around him basically ready to crucify broke my heart.

The same happened to me.

Can you imagine being basically alone in front of 40,000 people yelling obscenities at you? I doubt I would have been able to handle it as well as he has.

Anybody know if there is a link online to this? I had to work tonight and I don't have a DVR

I barely held back. I wouldn't be able to stand it. Looking at Steve sitting there with the headphones on and looking like he was on the verge of tears just tore me up.

After seeing this tonight, it just makes me even happier to see Cubs fans go through heartache. I hope they endure many more decades of it.

What really made me mad is the fact that his "friends" like basically ditched him and joined in with the crowd. They didn't show support and back him up while others were yelling at him and getting in his face.

That documentary gave Cub fans a bad name. I hope the curses will be alive and well for several more decades. That organization and those "fans" deserve it.

I tell you who's fault it was...freakin' Bernie Mac. "CHAMPS!....CHAMPS!!" he cried during the seventh inning stretch. I remember cringing when they showed that, thinking 'Dude....this is the Cubs."

I was watching the Steve Bartman documentary last night on ESPN and realized how stupid so many fans are. Living in Philadelphia, I've read about fans beating a man to death outside the baseball stadium, someone puked on a little girl inside one of the stadiums, etc etc...can I ask one question, are the games really that big of a deal??

I know some people lose sleep over their team losing or feel nauseated after a game (and I understand that) but seriously some people tend to go overboard.

This poor Bartman guy was a die hard Cubs fan who loved baseball. Every person around him did the exact same thing he did when the ball was headed their way, except actually get their hands on the ball. This guy has been exiled from Wrigley field for the rest of his life but no one raised he&& over the shortstop bobbling an easy double play ball.

I guess my passion for sports really died down after the 2005 UT football season. I just realized having false expectations only leads to major disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I love sports and enjoy going to games. I was in Yankee Stadium this past Saturday, I'll be at the Phillies first playoff game, Vols vs LSU on the 15th, etc etc but I know no matter what I can't control the outcome of the game and I will wake up the next day win or lose.

after watching that I hope the Cubs never win anything. So much crap thrown at a guy doing what everyone else would have done (and many around him did). He just happened to be in an unlucky seat

that's right. **** the cubs. if they have a curse on them its for what they did to bartman, not the other way around.

Everyone used him as a scapegoat.
It wasnt his fault.
The Cubs were up 3-0 with a game to play
and they caved..

The Cubs have no one to blame but themselves and maybe the manager for letting them believe it was Bartmans fault.

this thread has devolved into a giant mass of stupidity.

Bartman was an easy scapegoat at the time, simply because people were caught up in the moment of that day. as time has gone on, everybody realizes what really happened that night and the Bartman carries little to no blame.

i haven't watched the documentary nor do i really care to, but i'd be willing to bet the vast majority of those around him that night regret their actions. and those who don't are the exception, not the rule.

The reaction to that incident -- given the complete choke job implosion by the team, given that all the fans in the area were reaching for the ball, given everything -- is the moment that the Cubs transformed in my mind from sympathy-worthy, lovable losers to a bitter, repellent amalgamation of team and fans that deserves its legacy of failure. Almost everyone who's a Cub showed his ass over that one.

yeah, OK, whatever.

very easy to regret their actions when years removed from the incident. Their initial reactions tell more about them as a person

It's not unlike the Red Sox w/ Buckner. Yes, Buckner messed up, but the Sox could have won game 7. Same goes for the Cubs; Bartman didn't cause them to fall apart.

Some fans who acted irrationally and stupidly don't seem to feel bad for how the reacted at all. Saying your sorry, then proudly describing handing him your business card or throwing beer all over them, leads one to think that this is a story they proudly tell to anyone over the years who would listen.

The idiot bar owner two seats down was a jackass.

oh please. so because somebody lashed out in one situation it means they're a terrible person despite all the other good they may have done in their life?

guess we all are bad people.

It doesn't help when "leaders" like Dusty Baker and Rod Blagojevich are also calling for Bartman's head.

This is the part that gets me. I've been saying this for years. He was just the (un)lucky slob who came down with the ball. The team still choked away the series. Bartman wasn't at fault. Maybe for one play he was, but if he hadn't caught the ball another fan would've.

The blame and hatred towards Bartman lasted a lot longer than that inning or that series. Certainly more than a kneejerk reaction.

no it means when put in a situation like that they act like a piece of trash. How you react under stress says a lot about a person and Bartman can be sure he's better at it than that stadium full of people. Death threats, assaults, etc all happened way after the initial reaction. Just a bunch of losers looking for a scapegoat
