8/12/12 exhibition game thread...

I've been to more than I can count.

You are the one saying teams don't have a zone in their arsenal, not me.
And they work on a lot of things that aren't used, but focus more on things they use often.

And last, yes, each team has sets that they practice but seldom, if ever, use.

So your argument is coaches spend quality practice time working on things they know they won't use? Ok your right, I guess I don't know anything about basketball, because that sounds pretty stupid.

Right.

You haven't ever noticed a team switching up D to stop a penetrator or post matchup issue, yet tell me I need to learn. You haven't seen a team throw a zone, 3/4 or half court token pressure to make the O use some clock, get them out of rhythm, or force a bad shot.

Hit the books son. You got a ways to go. I suggest trying to not watch the ball bounce so much and watch the actual game.

I'm not your son you arrogant blow hard. You keep believing what you think you know. I don't have the patience to argue with fools.

Coaches run plays and formations in football and basketball practice that never see the court or field during a game.

And I'm not arguing. I'm telling you.
If you are unsure about something, it's best to listen or read, rather than assume you know all there is to know and be a smartass about it.

I'd be quiet as well. You are embarrassing yourself. And in the Yemi thread too.

Go to bed and sleep it off.

i think anyone who argues about something they know little about embarrasses themselves. Guy hasn't played basketball or been to practices, yet argues about what goes on during them.

Call it whatever you like.

Where's you get that I hadn't played basketball?

He didn't say that.

Look, I'm not going to deny if you have been to a bunch of college basketball practices or not, because I don't know you and it's a message board. So how is he supposed to know to believe you or not? Again, it's a message board.

It's a nice topic to have. I actually think you both have good points. Just depends on the coach.

Not trying to go off topic too much, but, yes this is a common practice in most sports practices.

The football team was practicing Bray running the option, honestly how often are we going to see Bray running an actual option this year?

I got into it with Sparty awhile back, much like this we disagreed on a topic, and because I he doesn't post here much I kind of discredited things he said.

Well, turns out Sparty knows what he's talking about. Involved with AAU for a long time coaching, and has been to countless coaching clinics by some of the best in the biz. The guy doesn't blow smoke, and is a straight shooter that knows what he is talkin about when it comes to basketball.

In all honesty when it comes to schematic things in bball, he might be the guy on his board who's opinion I value the most, very knowledgable guy.

Nice little bonus that he has a solid Austin Nichols connection too haha.

Maybe Cal has in the past but I don't think he did last year. His team last year was freakishly athletic at every position. No need to play zone when you can guard at every position and you have a phenomenal shot blocker behind you. Maybe if they had foul trouble in some game I didn't see.

Actually, Calipari worked worked extensively on zone this year, more this past year in practice, than all his previous years of coaching combined. That's from his mouth.

So regardless of whether or not he used it, he obviously felt the need to spent quite some time on it, and he seems to know what he's doing, so maybe it's not such a stupid idea after all.

At any point after about 9th grade, you practice on a lot of different things, but most coaches stay focused on their team strengths during a game. I assumed you didn't play because you would have known and you were arguing about something that's pretty basic.

Can you give me a link to Calipari talking about working zone? I also never said it was a stupid idea to work on zone. I said it was a stupid idea to work on zone if you know you will never play it.

Edit: I found this quote. Calipari working extensively on zone defense - Kentucky Wildcats - CBSSports.com RapidReports It says he worked on it for the reason I original mentioned. In case of foul trouble. However, there is another quote Kentucky Vs. Kansas: John Calipari Might Play Zone For Thomas Robinson - SB Nation Kansas City that seems to imply that they really didn't play it much or they wouldn't have been making a big deal about it at the championship game.

Nobody knows what they will run yet during the football season. However if they do put that option looking play in, as say a wildcat package or for Peterman, then they would all work on it at this point in practice.

Again, I admittedly haven't been to a college basketball practice. I still find it unrealistic that with only a few hours of practice a week that coaches would waste time on things they know they won't use. I'm not talking about working on situations that may or may not come up. I'm talking about working on stuff that the coach knows he will never do. Why practice it? Why confuse your guys with non useful info? Why waste time that could have been used refining what you are actually going to run? I just don't see it.

Who said coaches intentionally practice things they are 100% sure they won't use. Coaches are preparers and have to be prepared for any game situation.
Playbooks are huge. Options are huge. We had 12 plays from under the basket, and used @ 4 of them. Many coaches practice various forms of full court, 3/4 court, and half court pressure or trapping, but don't use them much. There are countless back picks alley oop plays that aren't called, but practiced. I could go on, but won't, because you are more intent on proving others wrong than learning something.

Zone may not be your base defense, but, like Sparta said, you still practice it in case you need to throw zone at someone for a possession or two just to mix it up.

Exactly Cal did it out of an off chance he may need it, CCM is doing it on the very off chance he needs it, you never know what's going to come up down the road. Even HC don't know what they always will or will not use, thus the reason they spend some time practicing things they aren't likely to use, but know it could happen.

Ok same point, you don't know what CCM will run, something may come up that makes him use a zone. Something may come up that makes Dooley run option, not likely, but sometimes you practice things that you aren't likely to use on the off chance you need to.

You're blowing the "stuff coaches will never use" part way out of proportion. No head coach knows whats going to happen, therefore he doesn't know every situation his team will come across. So things that most likely would never be used, you still spend some time on with the off chance that a situation comes up that calls for it.

As Spart just touched on, playbooks are massive, not sure if you've ever seen an NFL playbook (I have), it's huge. However, only a fraction of it are used, but most every play in that book has been practiced in case it's needed.

Here's another, how many times do you see full court plays ran with under a second for the win? Not very often, but teams practice those types of plays in the even that it is needed. Like football with quirky trick plays, or special teams plays, it's likely you'll never use it, but you practice it in case there's a situation that ever calls for it.
