(8) Butler vs. (1) Pittsburgh

Ultimately this boils down to the fact that some of us don't have a problem with Pitt losing the game because they were stupid. Others of us want the refs to swallow their whistle and look the other way so that Pitt doesn't get penalized for their stupidity. While that is the way that refs would normally call a game, I've never been a fan of rewarding stupidity.

There is stupidity and there is stupidity. Some stupidity is too meaningless to bounce a team from the tourney becasue of it. That's what this was. Other stupity on the other hand should cause refs to be fired. That's also what this was.

Then you all the foul! There were only 1.5 seconds left. It would not have been noticeably late. It's not rocket science. If something potentially or actually impacts the outcome, by all means blow the whistle.

So you take the game winner off the board and give free throws?

I agree, both were the right call. The Pitt foul may have been the dumbest I have ever seen in tournament history.

Agreed. It topped the previous record-holder for dumbest foul in NCAA tournament history, which was Butler's foul against Pitt with 1.4 seconds left.

Just about every game is officiated that way. Go watch a replay of our game at Georgia this year. I guarantee they call that over the back on Brian if it had happened at any other time in the game. That's how games are supposed to be officiated.

The refs essentially gave Butler the game on a weak rebounding foul that had no effect on the game. Games should never be won from the line, especially off of a weak shot from 90 feet away where the player isn't even throwing up a legitimate shot but instead fishing for a foul.

B noty calling that, the refs handed us the game. That was a horrible no call

Yep - both were - but if you actually had watched basketball as long as you'd claim you'd see COUNTLESS situations were the ref looks the other way on a similar play were the outcome is clearly unaffected by the foul.. on a rebound no less... with under a second and no attempt for a fullcourt heave.

So you're mad that the refs called a foul when a foul was warranted. Yes, countless times it goes uncalled but there have been plenty of other occasions where it has been called.

yes I actually agree. I would call the first one, but the second one is absurd to me.

The Pitt guy should have let it go, but the game was over at that point. It's whistle swallowing time.

By game I hope you mean regulation because swallowing the whistle would've sent it to OT.

At that point your hand would be forced as a ref. But only if the outcome is in the balance. Butler had no chance at scoring off of that rebound.

Except it wasn't - and not that many. Please tell me how many times you've seen a foul on a rebound with under a second (no opportunity to take it down court and shoot like there would be with 3-5 seconds).. allowing the other team to walk the court and shoot the game winning free throw? How many? Please tell me. It would be an understandable call if there were 3-5 seconds though.. since there is a legitimate chance to get the ball to half court for a heave.. Howard doesn't even have an opportunity to catch his balance before the game is over if they don't call the foul.

the last call was bogus plain and simple. Howard was 90 ft from the basket and had no chance of making any type of shot. Honestly, i dont know that the foul even occured before the .9 seconds should have been gone. The refs handed Butler the game, and its ridiculous.

the ref blew the game plain and simple. most posters on here, are glad that a "white" bball school won though so of course they'll show bias.

How is Butler a 'white' school(your term)? The leading scorer was a black kid.

Nice way to turn this argument about basketball into a racial 'thing'.

That's about as off the wall as it gets. Most posters on here couldn't tell you what the racial makeup of Butler is in the first place. I know I couldn't.

I almost pointed that out, but decided not to.

The three hit hit on the pump fake with about 6 or 7 to go was a thing of beauty.

Nevermind the fact that a black kid won them that game, and I was for Pitt anyway

Look dude I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, much less every single foul I've ever seen at the end of games. I know there wasx a VCU-wichita state game recently where a ref didn't swallow his whistle and sent a vcu player to the line with less than 2 seconds left. Preston knowles of lville got called for a foul 75 feet from the basket against wvu this year with less than 2 seconds left. It happens.

Not with .8 seconds left on a rebound (which was clearly secured I might add - it wasn't like the Pitt player managed to strip the ball and was a threat to put the ball in for a game winning layup) in a tie game.
