But let's just agree that I think UM is about the worst example of a b.s. commuter school masquerading as a university or college.
Given that the "U" is a respected private school with a beautiful campus in a cool international city, as opposed to a school in a podunk town populated with 'necks in jean shorts, I believe I'll choose to disagree. I bring up the "U" to remind you that the Gators aren't even the best program in their own state. You seem to forget that every so often. I like dealing out reality checks.

I guess that I am too wedded to the traditional image of a university. You know, actual STUDENTS and alumni going to the games, as opposed to punk high school kids and gang members; oak tress, not poles for strippers; scaled down "super secret" places for great food, not Bennigan's; a student union, not a strip mall; dorms and fraternities, not seedy motels and detention centers.

Say what you will hat, the tell tale sign is that any high school kid in Florida who can choose amongst the three universities (UF, FSU, and UM) will put UM at the very bottom of that list.

Because most northern Florida intellectual midgets can't afford tuition at the "U." Have you ever even been to Coral Gables? Also, I don't know what an "oak tress" is, but I'll take world class strippers any day of the week. I realize a trip to Wal Mart passes for entertainment in G'ville, but some of us require a little more.

I'll have to cast my lot with Lawgator. I've lived in Miami and been around the UM campus; and let me just say that I'd rather slam my finger in a car door at the top of every hour than be caught dead in that place.

Incidentally, if the old USSR were playing Miami, I would be in the stands with a hammer and sickle.

You know, hat and I have been crossing swords on this for months and either he is delusional or the place has really changed. I've been down there many times, though admittedly not for about 5 years now. But when I was there, what a pit! And on tv it still seems to me that the stands are filled with thugs who got free tickets somehow. I mean, their student body (if that is what it really is) just screams "on parole" to me.

hat, tell the truth. Did you go to UM for grad school or part of undergrad or something? You seem like such a nice guy otherwise, I'm just trying to figure out where this is coming from.

Nope. I've just always admired the program and been fortunate enough to become friends with a number of former 'Canes. The crowds at the OB and the student body are two different things. The Orange Bowl is nowhere near the campus. The industrial area the stadium's in and Coral Gables are totally different places.

Well, I thought the OB was reasonably close to campus though, if you go park anywhere near there, you need a flak jacket and an APC to get from the car to the stadium.

What ever happaned to using Joe Robbie for the UM home games? I know they played (still do?) the actual bowl game at Joe Robbie.

I remember going down there maybe about 5-6 years ago to watch and FSU-UM game there and I really thought the odds of surviving the walk to and from the stadium were about 200 to 1.

Against.

It depends on one's definition of reasonably close. I'd say wearing that garish orange and blue is the reason you felt threatened at the OB. I've walked into the OB as both friend and foe and never felt the least bit threatened. I'll be there Saturday night. I'll park in the neighborhood, get some great Cuban food, and enjoy myself.

Wearing UF's orange and blue makes you feel threatened anywhere. I have ALWAYS hated our school colors.

And you can quote me.

Slightly off-topic, but what in the world happened to the reply with a quote feature in this thread?

I'm pretty sure Julian Battle started at SS in 2002. Gibril Wilson was in reserve, and then started in 2003.

How we got onto talking about UM football is beyond me at this point. But let's just agree that I think UM is about the worst example of a b.s. commuter school masquerading as a university or college and that you like them for whatever reason you have.

Well now, you know what? I read this post and thought about it and you are absolutely right. I'm not kidding or being sarcastic. It is an excellent post and I admit that I was WRONG and should not have rained on the parade so much.

My apologies to all I offended.:hi:

Except hatvol, who for some inconceivable reason has taken it upon himself to defend the University of Miami.

alright, there maybe hope for florida fans yet. sorry hatvol i cant defend anyone who defends miami. or notre dame, michigan and the pac 10 for that matter.

i was with you, hat, until placing UM experience above UF. i don't like either school or team, but no question UF is in the mold of the SEC schools/campuses we know and love going to for games--tailgating, football stadium on campus, stadium full of students and not local gang members, etc.

I personally could care less about tailgating, proximity of a stadium to campus, and who inhabits the seats at said stadium. The only way I would spend a Saturday of my life in Gainesville is if I were sentenced by a court of competent jurisdiction to do so.

this year we'll call it the "we hate suck club":p .....but oh well.

i have to say that there is nothing about the OB that impresses me...the game day atmosphere, minus FSU or VT, is pathetic. the fact that they get the quality talent they have grown accustomed to is remarkable considering that they can't fill their stadium in most cases.

i understand it's a private school and all, and that Miami in and of itself is enough of an attraction for big time atheletes, but as far as the game atmosphere, it really lacks big time. and as that is not important to you Hat, that's fine....for me, it's a big part of the whole deal. But, as you say, i can't put Knoxville, Gainesville or really any SEC city up against the city of Miami itself. Just as no Miami fan can put their game day experience up against any SEC, minus KY or Vandy probably, game day experience.

If that school was anywhere but Miami, it would be no different than Wake Forest.

Which on the flip side should make what Florida and FSU have been able to do with Miami in the same state fairly impressive. Afterall, the only things they have going for them are the traditional college atmosphere. Big stadiums, with actual people in the stands mind you, crazy atmospheres...all the while placed in the North/Central Florida red neck heaven.

Florida and FSU are the public universities in a large, football crazy state. That's a pretty nice position to be in. I'm not terribly impressed with their accomplishments.

agreed...and i'm not impressed with either school...really for anything....but as for accomplishments go, FSU gets a lot of rub and for what? dominating the ACC? big deal. they won that league 11 or 12 straight years, which says more about the weakness of the other teams than it does about the strength of FSU imo.

Florida, while their tradition isn't long in tenure, i do have to admit, that winning the SEC 6 times in the 90's after being a doormat for so long is fairly impressive, especially considering the company they were keeping in their own league. the accomplished that, and a National Title, while at the same time Bama and TN both won SEC Titles and National titles during that same time span...so there was some competition in the league while they were on thier run.

BTW, i agree with you completely on Gainesville...can't say that i'll ever be caught dead there.
