If I "required" championships, I would have gotten off this bus a few years ago. Just admit it. You're part of the fan base that just goes to the game to see the band, eat some popcorn, and if we lose, c'est la vie. Some of us have higher aspirations for the program. If you tolerate mediocrity, you get it.

Cute, you say that in the thread where I didn't say this.......

If Tennessee goes worse than 7-5, I will even agree it's time for a change.

These NegaVols think that I want Fulmer to be there for the next 50 years and that I'm never disapointed when Tennessee loses. The TRUTH is, I am just not disrespectful to Fulmer, the players, or the fans that support them. I think Phil is the right coach for Tennessee in spite of last season, but yes, if he doesn't get better results with the changes he has made, he will need to let someone else try it. I'm just not gonna kick him in the ass and call him names on the way out.

Try Again.

Careful there Hat...Miami is finally in a conference where they will have to compete for a conference championship, and right now they are 0-1 (not even 2nd Place.)

Also, in a conference that includes Florida, UGA, Bama, Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee, placing second is nothing to bury your head in the sand about. That being said, I would love to win the SEC one year out of every five and a NC one year of every 10.
That's why the fan base here in South Florida is ready to burn Coker at the stake. They hold their coaches to higher standards. Excellence isn't just hoped for, it's demanded.

I think the major difference between hat's viewpoint and orangesquare's viewpoint is not the view, but the reason WHY they have different expectations. I assume (and could be wrong) that OS doesn't donate money to the athletic program every year. If I am wrong, then I'm way off base here, and I mean no offense.

If I were to invest thousands of dollars a year to a product, I'd expect to have higher expectations than someone who doesn't.

Oh come on, the fan base in South Florida is not even made up of Miami alum, therefore their allegiance is to championships, not to what is good for the university.

The fact you think following 5-6 with 7-5 is acceptable says all that needs to be said about your standards. I hope the band and the popcorn are up to your standards this season. Then again, those standards aren't too tough to meet.

I'd disagree with that line of thinking, and I'll tell you why.

I've seen a LOT of "donors" that pay their money, order their tickets, and don't even go, or they give them away. (Hat himself hangs out in Dallas and Miami, so if he REALLY is a Tennessee donor, he's one of THOSE guys, it appears.)

Me on the other hand, I go to EVERY GAME. I spend money to travel, stay in other cities, puchase tickets which ever way that I can, and live and die the University of Tennessee. I proposed to my wife in the North End Zone of Neyland Stadium, and last year, because of an Ebay scam, I lost 800.00 before the season even kicked off, attempting to purchase Tennessee tickets.

I spend my thousands, I just don't believe in doing it so that I can sit 250 rows up, infront of the jumbotron, and STILL not have the chance to purchase away tickets, when the University will allow scalpers and thier companys to purchase as many tickets as possible, just to turn a buck.

How, pray tell, does accepting mediocrity make a university stronger? Especially when mediocrity costs $2mil a year.

I stand corrected. :)

Nobody accepts mediocrity. People just have different opinions on how to achieve success.

I sure as hell don't expect 5-6 to National or Conference Championships. 7-5 wouldn't make me jump for joy, but I'm saying anyting worse than that and I would want someone else to take the reigns. That's something that you and your friends thought that I wasn't for regardless what the record was. 7-5 is an improvement over 5-6. I faithly believe that Tennessee will be challenging the top teams in the division, but I won't burn Phil at the stake if he loses a few games to people that all you "experts" say that he will anyway.

It is not accepting mediocrity, it is rewarding those who have faithfully pledged their loyalty and career to the university. Fulmer has earned the right to slip up a couple times.

Marshall, Vandy, Kentucky, AF, Memphis - 5 sure wins

Alabama, South Caro, Ark - should win these games 70-80% of the time

UF, UGA, Cal, LSU - Toss ups

I see 7 definite wins, maybe 8. If we can't take 2 of the toss ups, we've gone downhill. Just my opinion.

That's almost exactly the way I see things.

If I may, for this season...

Marshall, Vandy, Kentucky, AF, Memphis, Alabama, Arkansas, UF, and UGA...definite wins in 2006.

9 wins at least in 2006...and we should be able to beat Cal.

Ouch. I don't know man. I respect the optimism and bold prediction. However, I find the UF home game to be tougher than the UGA road game. The UF game is always a toss up. LSU isn't as talented on paper as UF, but you expect that to be a harder game? Strangely, I can't really blame you, as I have us beating UF but losing to LSU, for now. I may change it. I can do that. :)

I have UT going 10-2, but not exactly sure which games we lose. At first, I had LSU and Georgia. Then I read more about UGA's spring game. So I had UT 11-1, but I find that so hard to believe.

I think 100% of the people on this board would take 10-2 and consider it successful.

Florida is not the same Florida from 5 years ago (UT isn't the same UT as 5 years ago, yada, yada, yada.) They don't have the athletes or the coaching they used to enjoy, and last year, even with our completely awful offense, we still would have beaten them had our special teams shown up. I believe they had two 'Three and Outs' in which they kicked field goals!!! On top of that they had a TD drive of about 30 yards, if my memory serves me correctly. With all that help, they still only beat us 16-7.

So OS if Tennessee goes 7 and 5 and their losses are:

Cal, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Alabama (very possible). That would make Tennessee the 3rd best in the East and the 4th or 5th best in the conference.

Going 7 and 5 is less than 60%, that is failing and failing miserably. It is not even mediocre!!

Well if its any consoliation to you, if UT competes with Vandy again for 4th place in the SEC, those ticket prices should come way down. Those scalpers will lose money.

I don't see us losing to Bama. They lost Croyle, their O-Line still sucks, and they lost a lot of their awesome defensive players. Plus, they still don't have Prothro, and I hear the other good receiver (DJ Hall, maybe?) has been in some trouble.

True, but SC and Arkansas will be better then usual.

If we were having this discussion in 2004 I could also agree completely. After last year, UK, Air Force, and Vandy are the only three that I see that don't cause some degree of trepidation.

Marshall is worse than all 3 going into 2006. Memphis is also especially poor.

Both are well coached football teams with good athletes, and both could handle AF, Vandy or UK quite easily.
