This data is old, but we crush the UK in homicides with or without a gun.

For a developed nation we kill each other a ton and it is super easy to kill in this country.

How U.S. gun deaths compare to other countries - CBS News

Interesting. I'd be interested in the source of the data, since it's obvious that the focus was "gun-related -vs- non gun-related homicides / suicides / total death rate".

But yes, we are a violent nation. Mind you, we've departed the active shooter debate now, but let's ask the question: Why are we so violent a nation?

Good question. So let's go back to a valid database, say the FBI VICAP data, and let's see where all of those violent crimes are happening.

Hmmm...the majority seem to be in gun-controlled places like New York, Chicago, Detroit, LA, etc.

I'm not moving the goal posts, I'm just using government- produced data bases to answer a question.

We all have our opinions, and if we look hard enough we can all find, or twist, data to support our position.

None of which is solving the problem. And yes, it's getting worse.

Three of those are the most populated cities in the union.

Per capita none of our largest cities are in the top 5 for Murder.

There was an armed officer on campus.

Wondering same after hearing the sequence of events. he basically walked into the school unapposed, shot up the 1st floor, then shot up the 2nd floor, then went back down shot more, hit the fire alarm and went to Mcdonalds. Where were the guards and police?

Try the FBI data. CBS is CNN misspelled.

So go do the standard "per 100,000 population" breakdown and prove me wrong.

Hint: don't waste your time.

You get that NHTSA data on deaths by drunk drivers yet?

Hint: it dwarfs active shooter deaths.

I agree with you, and others, that we have a problem. Our point of disagreement is the root cause / causal factor, and how to address it. If we ever agree on that, we're halfway home on a fix.

Well then they needed more. My school had over 3000 students with 3 floors, and I could run from one end to the other in less than a minute. Where was the guy, was he deaf?

You could run that with empty hallways but try doing that with the hallways packed full of people exiting at once.

This was one of the more civil discussions I have seen on gun control. Good thread.

I am so conflicted on the issue. My dad was a State Trooper. I grew up around guns. He taught me to shoot when I was 8. I got a Beretta 9mm as a HS graduation gift.

I have a decent little arsenal of my own, but the only thing in danger from me is paper targets. Hell, I don’t even like to hunt. I’m not really into killing stuff.

I am familiar enough with guns that the tag of “assault rifle” doesn’t really scare me. You can do a LOT of damage with a standard pump shotgun. Are we going to ban those too? I can’t begin to imagine how many are already out in the world.

I’m sorry, but there are a lot of crazy people out there and I do not want to be the least armed dude in my house. Ever.

That said, I do not pack in my day to day life. I went to a burger place the other day and saw an older gentleman eating lunch with his wife who had a pistol strapped to his hip. Would that freak a lot of people out? They seemed nice.

Ask Great Britain about their gun free society, and the number of edged weapon assaults / murders / mass attacks they have had since Columbine, which is the default starting point for counting mass casualty attacks. Are 500 assaults with 2 or 3 victims each better than 50 assaults with 10 victims each? Just wondering.

Can you define "assault weapon" for me? Does it have to be semi-automatic? Pump shot guns can do tremendous damage. High capacity? I can empty a 7-round magazine on my .45 and reload in just a fraction more than it takes to empty a 20-round AR magazine. Pistol grip? All pistols have one. If it's black, does that make it an assault weapon? Is a black Corvette an "assault car"? Fact is, an "assault weapon" is any weapon used in an assault. It can be an AR, a knife, a car, or a flashlight.

Guns are not the problem here, but you'll never get it. People are. But do this for me, please: pull up the number of people who are killed by drunk drivers every year (NHTSA), and the number of people who are killed by "active shooters" every year (FBI). Just pick a year. Now tell me why cars are not outlawed. Obviously, we need "car control". Cars don't belong in the hands of civilians.

We do have a mental health crisis, but we also have an element of pure evil in todays society. You can outlaw or legislatively restrict "things" all you want, but you cannot eliminate evil, or those who are bound to do it, that way.

A bully only understands one thing. Fear. And evil only fears one thing. Justice. Sadly, we have forgotten and long-since departed the lessons of our forefathers. And we are paying for it, dearly.

I know you think I'm wrong, so let me know the next time your local pawn shop gets robbed, or someone shoots up the local VFW. I'll hang up and listen.
This all day long. Gun control doesn’t work. Look at Australia. It failed. You stop mass shooters by having a trained armed resistance.

Schools need to be locked down to outsiders. It's not an easy thing to do but those would be more worthwhile walls to spend money on
