Adonis Thomas

Not saying it was. Just asking because I still think we should recruit players like that which are not located extremely close to Memphis. Although I know that area is not a hot spot for basketball players.
Jackson and Memphis are nothing alike culturally. It might as well be two different countries.

I do not know Adonis Thomas, but it seems like he was a Memphis lean who gave other schools a chance to change his mind. Because of our lack of a big in his class and the quality of guys we have around him, plus some big OOC victories lately and tons of TV exposure, I thought we had a real shot.

Having a real shot at a Memphis kid who grew up loving the Tigers is an indication that Pearl's group is making tremendous progress in recruiting that city. People act as if coming in 2nd does not matter, but it really does. If a high school coach hates you and will not let you make your pitch you do not finish 2nd.

I fully agree with this statement. Living in Memphis, Ive been told that he has always wanted to play here but his visits were him basically saying "change my mind" and from what Ive gathered, no university has done that so far. Im not saying Memphis is above the rest but the fact that we are in his hometown is a big advantage. I did actually hear the UTK was 2nd or 3rd on the list though.

The definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting different results. Every coach at UT has tried to "maintain good relationships" in Memphis. It's always been a miserable waste of time.

The only university that has lasting success recruiting in Memphis now is Ole Miss. They are able to determine early in the process which players are going to be overlooked. There are going to be a lot of big time players coming from this city in the next few years and I wouldnt give up on recruiting here just yet. Memphis is only going to have about 5 schollys max next season anyway.

And Bolivar is about in the middle, about 20-30 minutes from me.

Wouldn't really call that Memphis or Jackson.

Bolivar is mostly African American but its still a small town type lifestyle. nothing like memphis except for the racial percentages.

That old Mental Hospital is one of the creepiest sights Ive ever had when coming in from the west side of town. It seriously looks like something from a horror flick.

Would Jackson be considered part of Memphis? That is where Chism was from. JP is also sort of Memphis native. They were the core of are only elite 8 team in history. I do think we should spend less time on Memphis and more on Atlanta though. The distance is less and we seem to have built a pipe line.

Chism was from Bolivar, not Jackson. People in Memphis do not consider Bolivar or Jackson a part of the metro area.

JP committed and attended Arizona, first. The only reason he did not come to Memphis is because he and Cal did not get along and Cal had CDR, Anderson, and Dozier. Prince would have played maybe 8 minutes a game on that team.

The only marquee player taken by the Vols in the last 15 years was Tony Harris. Unless you consider Lang Wiseman and Dane Bradshaw 5 star recruits.

Just because a player had a couple of good games does not make him great. Most of his points were garbage points off Smith, Chism, and Lofton misses. That's why he's in Turkey and not the league.

Actually Chism is from Jackson.. His mom still lives in Jackson. I heard that he transfered to Bolivar to be on a better team in High School and he failed some classes early in High School so he transfered to an easier school and to a better team that had another D-1 player in Willie Kemp and a future NAIA All-American, Brian Lake all his age.

Chism went to Jackson South Side and got beat by Bolivar (Kemp and Lake's team) in the '04 AA state finals. Lake was a senior that year and got MVP of the tournament. Chism transfered to Bolivar the next year and him and Kemp won the '05 state finals easily with Kemp winning the MVP award. In '06 they lost in the 1st round to Memphis Mitchell, who had a complete stud in Thaddeus Young.

Thad was also only one of THREE future D1 players on that team.

I don't see how anyone could legitimately want to play against C-USA talent if given the chance to compete against much better opponents.

We will see what happens but all signs point to Memphis. I thought we had a good shot with him until the recruiting violations. He has to be going to Memphis, although he did visit Knoxville recently. We have lost on Jakarr Sampson, A. Thomas and a 2012 East Tennessee recruit.

There is one upside for competing in C-USA, as opposed to the SEC: you can make yourself look even better against inferior opponents.

Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans went from playing against C-USA talent to winning NBA rookie of the year.

It's pretty easy for Memphis to turn the C-USA thing into a positive. All these players want to get to the NBA. In C-USA you don't get exposed as much and that makes you look good for the draft. Little less wear and tear on the body too than playing in, say, the Big 10 where they let people beat the hell out of each other and freshmen might not be physically ready to compete.

Ok so I guess you make a living on this forum by trying to talk smack to others. Seriously, you must have no life. I don't think anyone with a brain ever thought that we were leading for Adonis. If we didn't spend the time recruiting Memphis, our coaches would be out of their mind. Not EVERY top prospect out of Memphis stays there, a la Thaddeus Young, JP Prince, Elliot Williams (before he had to come back b/c of his Mother), Leslie McDonald, and now Chris Jones.

So seriously, stop with the berating...

And how many of those kids ended up signing with the Vols? One. A midget PG who is a wannabe Joe Jackson. So yes, you are wasting you're time in Memphis. GTFO.
