Yeah, and a major crime rate second only to Detroit Mi. I wouldn't let a kid of mine visit Mempiss, much less live there long enough to play basketball for them. Unfortunately there are parents out there who don't care enough about their children to keep them away from there:fool:

I hope you don't ever let your kid go to any of the following places (listed as they are ranked):

Miami, Las Vegas, Stockton, CA, Orlando, Little Rock, Charleston, SC, NASHVILLE, Baltimore, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, W. Palm Beach, FL, Charlotte, or Philadelphia. These are the cities in the Top 15 of the Forbes list you are referencing.

Crime in Memphis, as in most of these listed, is isolated to "the hood" areas of these cities that you would never set foot in nor live.

What I've never understood is how come Nashville's crime problem (#9 ranking) is never mentioned by other Tennesseans. I guess as long as criminals are the right color, the violent crime isn't as bad.

You just described the entire city of Memphis...or are you suggesting there is a "non-hood" area of that crap-hole city?

I'm not even from Memphis, nor do I have any allegiance, but these sweeping indictments about the city are false and stupid. If you SINCERELY think that on EVERY street corner there is a perpetual mug, rape, and murder, you are seriously ignorant. Every freaking city on earth has good parts and bad parts. There are some people who have visited cities a few times and have developed and impenetrable false reality, which causes them to make completely bogus and slanderous remarks about places they probably no nothing about.

I'm going to guess that less than half of the people talking trash about Memphis have been there, let alone seen a picture of the skyline on Google.

Hey English major, it's called hyperbole and sarcasm.

A student was shot and killed on the Memphis campus in 2007. The closest thing to this happening in Knoxville was the shooting at the Woodlands, but that was not on campus.

I don't think anyone has been shot and killed on the UT campus since the civil war. Just saying.

I have a first cousin that lives in Hernando, Ms. which is just outside Mempiss and I've been there many times and, each time I go back ,it never changes. It's most popular spot, Beale street, is a dirty downtown street that is glorified only for its music and BBQ. The riverfront is smelly and dirty and to find any decent neighborhoods, you either have to look at Germantown or go into Hernando, Ms.. Mempiss is a dirty town and anywhere you park in downtown, when you come back, you just hope your car is there and intact.:bad:

You know there is such a thing as a black racist and I believe you're one. Always have to play the race card.:shakehead:

English major? I could not tell in the least bit that you were being hyperbolic or sarcastic.

Well your overall lack of observation is the least of my concerns. If you can't tell, it isn't because I didn't try to be obvious. Of course people don't think the ENTIRE city is a dirt-hole. There are nice parts of Memphis.

They are called Germantown, Bartlett, and Cordova, and they are actually not in Memphis, but hey, who cares.

Those are nice areas if you are a neo Nazi or a Klansman. Otherwise, not really.

Mark Cohn and elvis disagree.

Mike tyson saying he had never felt more comfortable somewhere bc of all the people like him did not help the image of the city.

If Memphis was annexed to Mississippi, the state would run a budget surplus.
That is the reason for the animosity on the part of many. If tourists stopped paying sales tax in sevier county and 85 percent of the county went on welfare and state cost health care, the rest of the state would want to burn down gburg.

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Downtown Memphis is as safe as any downtown. I'd take Memphis' nightlife over Nashville's all day long.

I am a life long, white Memphian, that lives inside the loop in East Memphis. Downtown is not the hood as some like to perpetuate. Memphis' nightlife, local restaurants, and cultural arts (Orpheum, Museums, and Zoo) put Nashville to shame.

I just still don't understand what the draw is to Mempiss. :dunno: I mean, it's a crap-hole town with a University that has sub-par facilities to some of it's local high-schools, it plays in a sub-par conference (so winning as much as Mempiss has i the past in the CUSA is overrated), and they just got a young-buck head coach last year that had significant issues with winning consistently. I know those may likely stem from the NCAA penalties, but still, Mempiss? I'd rather be in orange. But then again, I'm biased. :hi:

The Finch Center is pretty awesome (which is the basketball facility) and they play in a Top Notch NBA arena. You could argue a lot of things about not wanting to play in Memphis (and the kids that live there that go there Crawford, Jackson, Black, Thomas dont have the issue of moving to a 'bad' city and want to play for the hometown), but you can't say they have bad facilities. Thats just dumb.

Uh, no. Nice try Jim Bob. White East Memphian. Just stating the facts. Memphis #2 on the list, Nashville #9. Both Top 10 cities in crime. The one that is over 50% African American has a boogey man on every corner. The other, excuses are made on how crime is reported, etc., etc.

Germantown has no character or culture. Bartlett is for rednecks and is mostly trashy. Cordova is an over commercialized eye sore of an area that is crime ridden. Downtown, most parts of Midtown, and all of East Memphis are safer than Cordova.

I don't think anyone has been shot and killed on the UT campus since the civil war. Just saying.

Fact: Student won $$ at the casinos, was followed, and happened to be on campus, where he lived, when he was shot. This was not a random act of violence.

Fact: U of M had the distinction of being deemed the safest campus in the state of TN in 2008 based on property crime, violent crime, and on campus crime.

What about Tyler Smith, Goins, et al carrying a handgun or 2 football players pulling a gun on citizens at a gas station last year? Yea, Knoxpatch is a safe beacon on the hill.

Hernando is a wannabe town full of rednecks. I have been parking in downtown Memphis for 20 years and have never had a vehicle stolen or broken into.
