Aeration and seeding time.

How about all of you just stop spraying carcinogens all over the ground that will only wind up in the water we all drink and the air we all breathe. Step back from the engineered grasses that will choke out native plants. And try enjoying the natural state of things. Just askin.

Now is the ideal time.

I wouldn't do it.

I don't recommend it. But hey......

I usually use Scott's line of products but as far as I can tell they don't have a granular broad spectrum preemergent AND a crabgrass preventer in one. Should I just focus on crabgrass preventer in early spring and then other weeds in late spring?

After reading the burn comment I did some quick research online and quite a few sites say burning doesn't really get the thatch. They were saying that if thatch is your issue then you should just rent a dethatcher.

Burning will also promote weed growth. The grass that's there provides a cover that staves weeds out early. What it boils down to, is your Bermuda/zoysia starts over.

I've never heard of burning the grass,if somebody tries it.let us all know if it helps or stunts your grass.I would be afraid of burning my house down :)

If I would have kept reading the thread till the end I would have just said "this"

thanks :hi: that is the cheap way,i love Zoysia grass, the only way to enjoy it is bare footed, just stand on it and dig your toes in and it will pretty well choke out the weeds, for you ones wanting to use it,just remember it doesn't like shade Periwinkle is your friend

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periwinkle_(color)

when it blooms, the picture makes it look bigger than it is,it is a great ground cover, once established, just run a weed eater over it a couple of times a year or let the taller plants that you want grow,I've seen it cover steep banks and grow around places that you can't mow and looks really good,it loves shady areas,it's hardy,no maintenance once established

my friend covered a really steep ass bank in between his drive way and his neighbors under some tress and it is killer looking

another friend mulched some banks that were really steep and planted a bunch of it and it took over and choked the weeds out and covered them and looked really great

it does look like an Ivy plant that you see growing up the sides of buildings and such, this is a small version, except it doesn't go up,it goes outward

I guess that is enough of my love for the mighty Periwinkle :)

Where do you buy these pre-emergents such as Dimension? I don't recall ever seeing them at Lowes or HD. Local co-op?

They've got them at Lowes and Home Depot, even Walmart. You're looking for Scotts, Vigoro, Lesco, Preen, Concern, Green It. Specifically this time of year, late winter/very early spring, is "Crabgrass preventer".

So I sprayed "Ortho® Weed-B-Gon Weed Killer for Lawns Plus Crabgrass Control Ready-Spray®" on Sunday to get rid of the Spurge, crab grass and chickweed I have

Am I too early? The weeds were "breaking out" in my yard and had to do something. Also I am going to tear up my yard and plant zoysia and wanted to kill the weeds prior to tearing up

What is the primary existing grass? Bermuda ?

You are not to early to spray. You essentially sprayed 2-4d. It can be sprayed year round. It is however not as selective of a killer in the hot temps of the summer. So the rate should be cut back.

What do you mean by tearing up? If in the literal sense, you wasted your time spraying. They will be back. If you are trying to eradicate all existing grasses and weeds to grow zoysia, I would spray the entire yard with round up. Give it 2 weeks ( depending on location) the plant the zoysia

I have fescue, and it looks crappy. Previous owners didnt really take care of it. I was planning on hard raking up the majority of the yard and planting zoysia. I was afraid of spraying roundup because I didnt want to linger around and kill my zoysia that I am planning on planting in May.

I used to have zoysia at my old house and loved it, so i figured I would spray weed killer, then hard rake it to dirt in a month or two, then plant zoysia sod

Round up won't hurt if you sprayed now. But 2-4d will also kill fescue at the right rate.

Will the zoysia be seeded or?

I think what your plan is, will work

Sod

I was afraid of using roundup because I didnt want it to linger when I put down my new sod.

It made sense in my head. The weeds are struggling right now after my Ortho weed be gone spray on Sunday. I figured I would kill the weeds 1st, then rake, then sod

If laying sod you will be ok either way. Just lots of water. No fertilizer till sod takes root.

No chemical at all after sod is laid. ( wait for roots)
The chemical you have used "can" have a residual for up to 30 days. So plan accordingly.
