‘23 AL CB Rickey Gibson (Tennessee commit)

If you can’t look at this staff’s first 2 recruiting classes and realize that we’re going to have major depth issues at corner and LB next season I don’t know what to tell you. It’s even more concerning that those positions are currently our biggest issues on the roster and that in year 3 it likely still won’t be addressed, and best case scenario we’re starting 4-5 star freshmen in 2024
That new thingy ....think they call it the portal...might come into play and help with our most pressing needs.

We had an abundance of roster issues when this staff took over. You can't fix everything all at once. They are aware of those issues as well and will work towards fixing then improving those positions.

we have better depth than we've had in a while.

Martinez likes dudes who can play all positions.

What? This isn’t even remotely true lol

Gibson picking UGA really doesn't make much sense for him. I mean, I get it, he's enamored by their success, but they already have 3 higher rated CBs committed in this class, plus they're pursuing another in Chris Peal, who they supposedly lead on. They've also got a 5* safety committed. So where does he fit in there? It appears pretty deep down that depth chart. It just seems to me that he'd find playing time here well before he finds it there.
Maybe they're putting him on offense? Ain't no telling what Lord Bowl Cut is telling the kid and his family.

Couldn’t have SIGNED. And Auburn went hard to flip him…Martinez (and Butch) get credit on that close.

Fair enough. I wasn’t really trying to discredit Martinez re: Sutton. I’m just saying he didn’t “discover” him with a great eval of a lower rated guy, as he did with Moseley. Sutton was already committed to UT when Butch got that job. WM still developed him and yes, kept him from flipping before signing day. And yes, I believe him to be a fine DB coach.

Our corner recruiting just got significantly better with the news on Gibson, but we still need Matthews too in my opinion or maybe a JUCO stud. I don’t know where you think the current depth is at corner either. Because the only corners we added were Desmond Williams and Christian Harrison, and Williams apparently was very underwhelming in the spring and I’ve not heard anything about Harrison through camp. I think Hadden and maybe Turnage are guys that can play on an island and apparently Charles looked good at corner in the spring, but Slaughter, Turrentine, Walker and Rucker are S/N as is Conyer. As far as Martinez wanting DBs that can play all positions that’s the most preposterous thing I’ve ever heard. Who doesn’t want a corner that can tackle like a safety and a safety that can cover like a corner? The simple fact is those guys don’t grow on trees and outside of maybe Minkah Fitzpatrick I don’t even think Bama has had guys that can do that. You want safeties that are capable of defending WRs so the offense can’t create mismatches, but it’s never going to be like the NBA in the defensive backfield where it’s become positionless. So signing a bunch tweeners out of HS thinking you can coach them up into guys that can play on islands without actually signing true corners in case those “defensive backs” as Tim Banks calls them don’t pan out is a good way to get fired quickly in the SEC. It would be the equivalent to Rick Barnes signing a bunch of 6’8 - 7’0 guys that can’t shoot out of high school in hopes that he can turn them all into Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant, or Jabari Smith while only having 1-2 guards that can shoot and handle the ball

Up until now the possibility of having a Bryce Thompson and Alonte Taylor freshman year scenario at corner was a very legitimate possibility in 2024 if this staff’s work in the transfer portal at corner was an indication of what lies ahead. Hadden, Williams, Slaughter, and Turnage all will be gone by 2024 and apparently Turrentine was recruited as a S/N. We only have 1 corner currently on the roster that will still be here in 2024 and that’s Christian Harrison, and at this moment none in the current class

Martinez has always recruited DBs that can play multiple positions. We will be just fine.

Willie got 3 drafted last year from UCF
- 2 star Grant - Falcons starter
- 3 star Robinson - Giants starter
- 2 star Gowan - Eagles roster

In a year with us, he got one in the 2nd round (4 star Alontae) now in Saints 2-deep and in the 6th (3 star Theo) quickly in the Titans 2-deep.

Not worried at all about secondary recruiting with Willie at the helm.

Theo was a 6th round draft pick btw.

And Deshawn Rucker and Christian Charles. Point is somewhat valid but not as dire as it seems.
