Alex Thomson - Wagner QB (Grad Transfer)

Ken Anderson - Augustana College

That's DIII folks. And Anderson was a great QB for the Bengals for a few years.

There's definitely no exact science to recruiting or evaluating QB's. By far the hardest position to evaluate. You never know how they will handle the pressure of the position or how mentally strong they will be when it doesn't go their way. So many factors that can make or break a QB and you just never know. They can have all the tools in the world but if they don't have it upstairs it won't matter.

Sounds like a heck of an all around athlete. Was also punter , standout linebacker, and averaged 24 points , 11 rebounds and 5 assists for the basketball team in high school. I think he is worth giving a shot. He is actually big enough to try at linebacker if QB doesn't work out.

We desperately need a QB that can play immediately. I'm higher on JG than most here, but the real problem is that with Dormady gone, JG is the only serviceable QB on the roster.

While I know a lot of people here love McBride for his moxie, dude is just not a P5-level QB. His stats were terrible. He doesn't have the arm strength or the height to be competitive in the SEC. He could succeed with an FCS team, but he's not going to work out at UT, nor does he fit into the new offense at all.

Shrout is a project at best. Dude threw 26 INTs during his Senior season in high school. He has the potential, but if we're being honest, he needs a few more years of development before he could conceivably be ready.

Right now, we're in a situation if JG gets injured, we could be staring at a 3 or 4 win season. And while everyone expects this to be a rebuilding year, I don't think anyone wants to see a repeat of 2017. So with that said, I hope we get this guy.

The thing is, we saw McBride play, and make plays, with both arm and feet. Screw stats at this point -- he was thrown into the fire at mid-season as a true freshman.

I'm not arguing that he's our best guy right now, but I do look forward to seeing him develop with time.

And one more thing ... I'm not saying don't take a grad transfer -- I'll be glad to leave that decision to the coaches.

But, I will point out that in a bad luck scenario where both JG and McB went down, we would have another guy that can play QB, now that Jennings is going to be back on team.

The thing is right now we have two QBs, Shrout is on the way but definitely needs a redshirt. You bring Thomson for one year and you can roll into the season having 3 QBs ready to go without having to worry about playing Shrout and next year Thomson is gone and you have your 3 scholly QBs ready to go.

We need him regardless if he starts.

A mediocre at best RS sophomore. A walk on. And a 3 star freshman.

Slim chances even one of them is adequate next year, much less two.

He has two years, read the first post. Also for all on here who think they are only looking at this kid for a backup, I don't think so. When a NFL QB coach says this guy is legit and is as good as most NFL backup QB's right now, well that speaks volumes. Do we have anyone on roster that a NFL QB coach would say right now they are as good as most NFL backups? I did not see it and with a new system for all to learn, the QB spot would be wide open. But that's just me spitballing though.

I have no problem with this scenario.

But I think they said Thomson could play 2 yrs?

I would think he would take the opportunity where he felt he had a very, very good chance to play. Why walk into a one and done deal only to sit the bench?

There's always going to be programs that can give a graduate QB a starting job. One of those is where he'll go.

How quickly we forget JG was also a highly regarded QB, ranked a Top 2 QB on most sites. Dont forget what the Butch Jones effect can have on players. I think JG still has a chance to be really good for us.

That 45 yard throw a couple minutes in had a lot of air under it. To be the next best thing in the pro's, I would think he would need a little more laser rocket than rainbow? JMO

Hell, Stevie Wonder could come here and start at QB. This kid would come in and start Day 1.

The kid ain't going to transfer to a school where he won't start. If he comes, we will know that he's gonna start.

I can't picture this staff giving anyone that kind of guarantee, especially at QB. Brings Chris Simms to mind.
