All four knew about the guns-----

What message would suspending them a game or two send? If they are back playing when the games matter, where's the deterrent? I think you either find a way to make their lives miserable as a punishment, which isn't that hard for a creative coach, or you dismiss them outright. Half measures and "suspensions" don't do much for me.

Hat, if the facts are as reported, ie pot and alcohol, and two 9 mms, with at least one having an altered serial number, and if all four knew of the guns, what would be your endorsed outcome?

Unless there is something else to come about how or why they came to be in possession of the guns, they'd have the option of rising at 5 AM every morning for the remainder of their time at UT to aid the janitorial staff in their work before heading to class or simply leaving.

They were speeding...don't play the race card...makes me sick.

70 mph on that section of I40 is entirely standard. You go out there and drive 55 through there and see how quickly the cars blow by you.

It's not "playing the race card" to suggest that a car full of black guys is more likely to be pulled over than a car full of white guys. It's just the way the world works. It doesn't exculpate the players in any way for the drugs and the guns, obviously; nobody's trying to suggest that somehow it does.

Classic case of being pulled over for DWB.

i don't know if you're serious or not, but it is pretty hard to get pulled over on I-40 through downtown, especially being 15 mph over the limit.

i've certainly been going faster than i should with cops in the area and never been stopped.

it certainly makes me wonder.

Were the guns loaded? If so, what were the players planning to do that night with the guns and drugs?

I can't believe some of the responses here.

1. It's racist.

2. My favorite Tennessee fan line, "everyone does it".

3. unlawful Search.

We are talking about black market firearms, unregistered firearms, drugs, alcohol, DUI.

I really don't think some of you understand the seriousness of what is happening. I love what The pump client said. He said, "if these were your kids". And then went on to say they wouldn't be on national TV or something to that effect. UUmmmm..... If these were our kids, they would be IN JAIL, awaiting probable felony charges, drug charges, alcohol charges, and there would be no grace period. If these were our kids, they would be getting ready for a 2-5 year prison sentence. They wouldn't be talking about what "kind of suspension" they are about to receive. This is being handled, and talked about ridiculously, while the nation is laughing.

I can't believe how thickheaded you are. Nobody in this thread is saying that this isn't serious. Speculating on the original reason for the traffic stop isn't the same thing as trying to excuse the stupidity of these players at all.

first of all, when you are speeding, you get pulled over. Second of all, when the officers smell MARIJUANA in the car, it is COMPLETELY LAWFUL to search. Third, when a cop ask if he can search your car when he smells drugs, and you say no, that is called PROBABLE CAUSE and SUSPICION. They are absolutely allowed to SEARCH without a WARRANT OR CONSENT.

Some of you are being clear on this, and are not being bias. But some of you need to take the orange tinted glasses off, and realize what is going on. And I love how you dodged the question about the pump client and what he said about, "if it were your kids".

Laughable.

That's not exactly true. Suspicion it is, but probable cause it is not. Probable cause would be actually smelling the drugs and observing erratic behavior. A negative response to a request for consent to search does not constitute probable cause in any way, shape, or form. In this case, the officer would not even need to request consent to search...he/she would have had probable cause to do it already.

Sorry to nitpick.

That's basically what I was meaning. When they smelled the drugs, they can search is they want to. When they ask if they can search, and you say no, that is suspicion. Especially since they smelled dope. Point is, they have free right to search all day long.

Get high and make sure no one was gonna F*k with them. Not taking a stand either way, but this is a likely mindset. In todays urban culture unfortunately its a very common thing for high profile athletes to carry weapons. Right or wrong, its fact.

haha.....

Yea, it's everyday college athletes are carrying loaded, illegal, black market firearms.

There we go again with the Tennessee stance on things, everybody is doing it.

No MOST players are not carrying loaded illegal firearms around while drugin and drinkin and speedin.

But, did it make you feel better to say it?:cray:

You simply know NOTHING about the culture the MAJORITY of these kids come from. Sorry if it ruins your peachy cream view of life, and as I clearly stated, I'm not defending or condenming them. But to say that it is not common for, Drinking, smoking weed, and casual and flippant dealings with firearms to go on at the majority of big time schools with big time athletes is naïve at best. Obviously not always all three at the same time. But ill bet my 2010 salary that there is a D1 player getting high right now, there's also another one getting drunk RIGHT NOW, and another one handling a firearm, also RIGHT NOW.

Ye GODS, you're DENSE. Nobody said ANYTHING about an UNLAWFUL SEARCH except for YOU. We're only SPECULATING about WHY cops pulled the car over in the FIRST PLACE. Because it is EXCEEDINGLY UNUSUAL for a car to be pulled over going for ONLY 70 MPH through the MIDDLE OF DOWNTOWN Knoxville.

Some of you are being clear on this, and are not being bias. But some of you need to take the orange tinted glasses off, and realize what is going on. And I love how you dodged the question about the pump client and what he said about, "if it were your kids".

I didn't "dodge" any question. First, you didn't even ask a question. You just made a sarcastic statement. Second, I don't know what Pearl said about it at a press conference, and I don't particularly care anyway. All that's going to be is boilerplate, canned coachspeak stuff. I'm more interested to see how he actually handles it. I'm not particularly a fan of Pearl's, so I'm not that optimistic.

That's the direction I was heading. Could have been a cop just trying to meet his quota, but I just don't know.

Before we go there, maybe it was the Illinois plates---maybe erratic driving (They were obviously stoned)---and MAYBE, just maybe they were doing 15 over the limit in the early morning hours.

The cop had a reason to pull them over----Speeding.
If he had any other suspicions, he was right.
Lastly, how do you know that the cop wasn't black? Ah ha.
