All things health: nutrition, exercise, etc

If only I would eat healthier again... Anyone have healthy meal options for a guy that can't cook? I get plenty of exercise as I race road and mountain bikes. I'm at 230-ish, and that's not nearly light enough to be a competitive cyclist.

Eating healthy isn't really very difficult, as a lot of your intake should be from fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. It's not difficult to make a salad, cut up some fresh fruit, steam or lightly stir fry vegetables, cook brown rice or sweet potatoes, and grill or bake chicken, fish, or lean pork (tenderloin, etc.). Plus, you might enjoy learning a little bit about cooking -- I have taught myself and am quite proficient (enough that I consider even opening a restaurant one day). Cooking "fancy" meals or French fare is much more challenging (and much less healthy!).

The internet is your friend. Get a simple grill cookbook (Weber makes a nice one). Visit a quality market (I love Fresh Market and EarthFare) -- most of the employees are eager to help you. Open your mind to things you might have hesitated to try in the past (tofu, sprouts, seafood, etc.). And, don't get hung up in trying to always make elaborate meals.

Hope this helps!

I'm actually a bit of a raw foods nut, which is great if you don't like preparing things

Hell, when I get to harvest vegetables I will just straight up eat some of them out of the ground. Good stuff.

Another great strategy, but not for everybody. Breaking in with some quick-grilled or steamed veggies is a good first step. All for the "from the earth" approach, though, Milo. You West-Coaster, you.

I eat whatever I want in whatever quantity my stomach will allow. I work out 4-5 times a week (either a gym workout or playing tennis or whatever else), and my body never changes.

I weigh what I did in college, and I'm basically the same strength. I max'd out on strength at about age 19 and my body has looked basically the same ever since.

Wow thats really good. I remember after i started eating healthy religiously the first time i ate fast food after a couple months. I went to chick fil a and had the runs just from a grilled chicken sandwich. I love the way it feels to be in shape congrats and keep it up.

Ha I know exactly what you mean. When I was in college I got on a pretty hardcore healthy eating kick. I went a few months without eating any form of fast food, but one night I didn't have any food in the house and was too lazy to go to the store so I went to Krystal. I got the Krystal Chicks combo. I made it halfway through the first chick and my stomach was literally rejecting it, like I wanted to go throw it up. Tells you a lot about how unhealthy fast food truly is.

I also noticed that when I go on my health kicks (which always consist of drinking a LOT of water and staying very hydrated) eating fast food tastes like you're eating salt by the spoonful. Horrible.

What are you in to?
I am into fitness. Fitness whole pizza in my mouth. SIAP

Used to run 7 miles a day, now I struggle to get 4 miles in a week.

I try to walk 40 minutes at lunch, usually that's about 2.5 miles.

Like to go hiking, urban exploring.

I do a little upper body stuff just for some definition, even though I am not going to impress anyone with my free weight selection.

It's all about losing weight for me. I have made all the dietary changes I can maintain, so I am trying to find ways to burn calories without adding muscle.

I am also really into eating an entire pizza in a single setting.

I cut out diet cokes too. I cut out all carbonated stuff, including beer. Water, skim milk, and red wine is about it now.

Following principles of South Beach Diet. Exercise is cardio one day, strength training the next. Cardio is usually the treadmill or a Turbo Fire workout. Strength training is one of Jari Love's workouts.

This is still my go to ......

Just started eating better couple weeks ago, SBD, and getting more consistent with my workouts.

Mega bump! Thank you!! I forgot this was even here!

I take D but it's cause of the calcium thing.
I was thinking of starting a thread and found this one already here. I could share more about my health ailment/adventures than most people want to hear.

Anyway, what I meant to ask is if you take extra, above the recommended amount? What's interesting me is its role with the immune system (I have rheumatoid arthritis).

For those that don’t know, Diet Cokes are poison and I can’t believe they don’t come with a warning label similar to cigarettes.

I used to drink 2 or more DC’s daily until about 10 years back. I was very active, not heavy, and exercised daily yet my feet would ache whenever I was on them much. I was regularly buying new shoes thinking that was the problem. A BIL was a big DC drinker who also had foot trouble although he is a heavy man. He traveled out of country for a couple weeks where DC’s weren’t available and miraculously his feet quit hurting. Shared his experience and I quit them and within 3 days my feet quit hurting never to return. If Diet Cokes can cause this, what other damage are they on the human body?

Related, this is a long but mildly interesting discussion on the effects sunlight has on the body. It's hard to get enough sunlight/vitamin D naturally during the winter.

Vitamin D

Anyone take supplements? Have their levels tested?
Mine were low even with all the time we spend in the sun in FL. Took some larger doses prescribed by the Dr and now supplement 4000 iu daily. Wife does too and both our levels are great.

I try to eat from the periphery of the grocery store - fresh veggies, fruits, lean meats, eggs, skim milk, Greek yogurt, nuts, etc... Carbs are usually whole grains... Stay away from processed foods and refined sugars. No sugared drinks. Works for me and is an enjoyable diet.

About 15 years ago (I'm 74) I'd been riding a desk for a long time and had gotten up to 240 (I'm 6'2"). I cut out all meat except fish, processed sugar and white flour. I lost exactly 1 pound a week for 50 weeks. I've stayed around 195-200 ever since.

Currently I'm lifting weights 3 times a week and doing some sort of cardio or yoga 5 days a week.

I started taking some Vitamin D. Doctor recommended it at a recent visit even though she didn't test the level since she said it is an expensive test and insurance likes to fuss about it. I take 2000 iu a few times a week and some in a calcium supplement and my one a daily vitamin.

Went plant based last June and started exercising regularly in November (weights 3 times a week, cardio 2 times) and dropped all of my numbers (cholesterol, BP, etc) at my recent visit. Turned 42 this year and previous visits with Dr. also had discussions about either lifestyle changes or getting on meds to control things. No need for the discussions this time. Plant based works (no meat, fish, very limited dairy and eggs) for me. Dropped 20 lbs as well. Now i just need to rein in my drinking so my triglycerides will be a bit lower although Doc said they were fine. Also drink mostly water, juice or oat/almond milk now. Cut diet soda and beer for the most part.

I lift weights 3x a week and do moderate cardio twice a week. Each workout session takes just over an hour. I used to only swim 5x each week, but the pool I used closed, unfortunately. Now I use the workout facility in my neighborhood.

I try to eat 1800 calories or less each day. Lean meats - sirloin, chicken, ground turkey, fish. Veggies - spinach, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, peppers, onions, arugula. Nuts - almonds and cashews. Dessert - anything, just very small portions - 3 bites of ice cream, or 2 fun size candy bars. A protein bar and plain Greek yogurt is my goto breakfast, right after exercising. No late night snacking! Dinner is at 5pm, no eating after 6pm. I’m not always able to eat that early, but the important thing is not snacking on chips and dip at 11pm like I used to do.

Drinks - coffee, milk, wine, water, green tea. No added sugar

Foods I avoid - chips, beer, soda, anything fried and greasy

I have lost over 50 pounds since July 2021. I still have a bit of stubborn lower belly fat, but I know it’s slowly going away because I’m still losing weight, and I just went up another notch on my belt last week. I might need to tweak my workout a bit - do more high-intensity interval exercises to get rid of that lower belly fat.

Thanks for the write up. I’ve been roughly doing the same thing since the beginning of the year and lost about 10 pounds so far. Can’t get over the 202 hurdle for the past few days though.
