All things health: nutrition, exercise, etc

I do crossfit, or the Spartan WOTD. I run half marathons.

I try to stay away from red meat and don't eat dairy

I have very very little metabolism. If I don't exercise I gain weight fairly rapidly. That being said about once a year (usually fall/ winter) I become overweight and have to start slimming down when it gets warm again. I look my best between 200-210 and feel overweight when I hit 220-230. Right now I am 250 and I feel horrible. Starting Monday I'm back on my diet/exercise routine and I can't wait.

That being said, I've pretty much become a pro at this whole "get back in shape" thing. I've probably done this every year since college (I'm 26 now). Now I know you're probably thinking "your diet isn't good because you gain it back all the time" but truth is I just go from one extreme or the other. During football season I'm eating pizzas and wings like its my job. During winter, staying in my house, playing PS3, and eating out a lot. Then I do my "get back in shape routines" in spring/summer (yes I'm off to a late start this time).

Anyways, here's some advice that always gets me through my regiment.

1) GET GOOD SCALES!! This is huge, low quality scales will lie to you and you can jump on them once and then jump on them again 10 seconds later and be a whole different weight.

2) Don't be afraid to cheat. It's much better for your psyche. I do a cheat day and looking forward to it gets me through my diet. Yes you take steps backwards, but there are times when you just really really want a coke and some pizza. If it keeps you on your diet, it's for the greater good. Go for it.

3) If you really struggle with jogging, stop and walk. Nobody's timing you. Nobody's clocking you to make sure you're keeping pace. You're still getting exercise and as long as your heart rate initially stays up you're doing better than sitting around.

4) Protein Shakes. I drink one every morning with breakfast. And another one as a mid day snack.

There's many others but it will start getting boring so I'll stop here.

All good tips, and I will preface this by saying EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT!

But diet is still far and away the most important thing to weight loss. My metabolism isn't all that great either, but I managed to drop 50 pounds about four years ago strictly from dieting.

I view fitness and health factors as a pyramid, the base of which is diet.

Just finished yoga 90X.

I have always worked out in one form or another. Dropped from 250 to 200 at 6.2 when I started following p90x nutrition plan.
In my mind I think of it as a lifestyle. Diet seems temporary to me and destined for failure
I also think Good health is 70% what you eat and 30% exercise.

How long did it take you to lose 50?

Three or four months... It was crazy. Losing weight at that rate is definitely not healthy, and looking back I shouldn't have done it that way. A pound to a pound and a half per week is about the healthiest way to go about it.

Apple cider vinegar does what for you?

I have a glass or two of red wine most nights. Used to work with a guy who was really knowledgeable about the research that had been done on the heart health benefits of red wine. Pretty interesting stuff.

It does just about everything, but it must be the raw acv. If you go to your local Kroger and get theirs, not the same and it will not work.

I have, or had, hypertension. I had to take three types of pills for it everyday since I was 35. I went to the DR one day for a hernia, they took my blood pressure. It was 220/110. I am virtually off the medicine now thanks to acv.

I have not eaten out of a microwave, that I know of, in over five years. I haven't had any soft drinks for the same amount of time. I drink 3 drops of commercial hydrogen peroxide diluted to 3% in water everyday. I take borax two times a week, as well as the coconut oil mentioned earlier. I try to spar with my Bei Shaolin buddies a few times a week.

My only vice these days, for the most part, is beer. I love a good beer.

Quote from a site I read quite a bit:

Our Bangkok contributor Ted tells us, "Apple Cider Vinegar in itself is alkaline because of its "ash" content, which means if the apple cider vinegar was burned, what is left over becomes ash. When you check for the pH of that ash and dissolve it with water, the content is alkaline. Whenever our body digests anything, it undergoes oxidation, which is similar to burning and the end result is that you can determine whether the end product was alkaline or acid. Apple Cider Vinegar has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties, primarily coming from the malic acid and acetic acid portion of the vinegar. Apple cider vinegar acts as a buffer in the body because the acetic acid reacts with base or acid compounds to form an acetate, therefore rendering them chemically bioavailable for the body's utilization. Additionally, Apple Cider Vinegar can reduce the toxicity of certain compounds by converting the toxin into an acetate compound, which is less toxic. This is why they are ideal for insect bites and certain skin allergies. While Apple Cider vinegar in itself is considered alkaline, a chemically pure vinegar (acetic acid) is neither acid nor basic forming as it leaves no ash as the entire portion, when burned evaporates completely. Ted"

Apple Cider Vinegar, that wonderful old-timers home remedy, cures more ailments than any other folk remedy -- we're convinced! From the extensive feedback we've received over the past 8 years, the reported cures from drinking Apple Cider Vinegar are numerous. They include cures for allergies (including pet, food and environmental), sinus infections, acne, high cholesterol, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, contact dermatitis, arthritis, and gout. Apple Cider Vinegar also breaks down fat and is widely used to lose weight. It has also been reported that a daily dose of apple cider vinegar in water has high blood pressure under control in two weeks!

I also give it to my dog, and she has not had heart worm medicine or fleas in several years.

Apple Cider Vinegar is also wonderful for pets, including dogs, cats, and horses. It helps them with arthritic conditions, controls fleas & barn flies, and gives a beautiful shine to their coats!

Ehh 3 or 4 months to lose 50 isn't that bad. It's a little over 3 lbs a week which is a bit high but nothing unsafe, especially considering you'll drop quite a bit in your first 2 weeks just from water weight and your body "detoxing" all the crap you've been eating. It's those "I lost 30 lbs in 30 days" things you see that are bad.

In all seriousness though, I'm a big believer in juicing and do it quite often. I feel completely different when I'm drinking 2 to 3 different juices a day. Good stuff.

Those diets are bad, but the calorie deficit one needs to run in order to lose weight at that rate = malnourishment

I managed to keep the weight off, but man did it give me some issues.
