An Oral History of the Night Lane Kiffin....

I actually hate him more now than then. Being a Bammer is unforgivable. A detestable sin.

LSU has been spewing those sentiments for many years now toward the Tide. Makes the rivalry a little more amped up than it normally would be , if that's possible? Lane just needed a fresh start with a winning program and we'll have him calibrated and motivated for his next big thing.

I can't imagine someone as successful as Saban won't have a GPS tracker like they use on sharks and some sort of remote shock collar on Lane until he proves he's not about to repeat history, again.

He will not be ask to do what he did for you. We hired Lane knowing what his potential is and no one will be asking him to step out of his comfort zone in Tuscaloosa. Just be creative and be aggressive on offense. The talent level among the skilled players will make him look good.

Ainge10heisman is my name, and I cheer for that Vols team. Until USC came calling, and tore up our fan base again. In the winter of 10, we were a hungry team, just barely alive. On Jan. 13th, UT had fell. It's a time I remember oh so well.

The night Kiffin drove ole UT down, the bells were ringing.
The night Kiffin drove ole UT down, the people were singing.
They went..na na na na na, na na na na na.

Hell I always liked Kiffin till that night, he was entertaining and was exactly what UT needed at that moment. What he did to the players, university and fans was inexcusable but I understand but it still wasn't handled right.

A few people blame him for the situation this program is fighting to get out of but I still believe this all started long before Kiffin wore orange. That night in the Georgia Dome when Fulmer and Chavis couldn't get out of their own way against LSU was the beginning of the slide that became UT football. I know, there were some good years after that but that would have been 3 National Championship games in 5 years. UGH, I was so ready to go to the Rose Bowl.

CBJ is leading this program in the right direction and the Big Orange will soon be back in its rightful spot on the national scene

I'm starting to think that Vol fans actually secretly wonder what could have been with this nut.

I can answer that: Sanctions.

It's hard not to wonder, because it's not that impossible to believe he would have won here. But yeah, there probably would have been a Pearl-type NCAA implosion, maybe even right around the time the Pearl thing happened. That would have been a pretty damn tough pill to swallow, losing your football and basketball coaches at the same time.

A decent run by Dooley would have prevented a lot of the "what might have been" thinking.

LaMarcus Thompson: (Kiffin) did talk a lot of stuff about other programs but we loved it -- made it feel like he trusted us as players to perform great and we played hard for him and trusted him. Looking back, that coaching staff was great. Some of the best times I had at Tennessee were in the Lane Kiffin era. I wish they never left because (Derek) Dooley was a joke -- the most arrogant and selfish person I know. I'm so glad Butch Jones is there now -- great guy and coach.
Daniel Hood: Kiffin was always really good to us players. I do believe that if it was any other school, he would have stayed. He loved being here and loved the team we had. But who wouldn't take the opportunity to coach the team you grew up loving? I know I'd leave any school for the chance to coach UT. As bad as that night hurt and the next three years hurt, it has finally led to where we are now. I know we get snow blinded by our current situations, but all of that needed to happen to get us to where are now. We now have Coach Jones, who I believe is the best coach in the nation. No other coach has his passion and his enthusiasm for the sport.
Ben Martin: The (Kiffin) coaching staff was pretty fun to be honest. I never worked so hard and had so much fun doing it. Looking back at him leaving, I'm still bitter about it but as an adult I can see the logic in taking a "dream" job.

Man...how did Dooley get ANYONE to come here?

They didn't mention this, but they tried to Jimmy Hyams about the night Kiffin left. His response?

"What? Kiffin is still the coach, you silly boy!"

Kiffin: I had a decision to make, and it wasn't easy. It was very difficult. But this was the best decision for my family. This wasn't about money. It was just a decision, it was probably the one place -- being in California for 10 or 11 years, all three kids being born there. How much my wife enjoyed it there. The memories that we have there. It's probably the best job in America. And I left a great job. I left probably one of the top-five jobs in America to go to the best job in America. But we have left the Tennessee football program in a much better place than it was 14 months ago. Much more national attention. Much more recruiting attention. And a much better roster.

Yes, we received much more national and recruiting attention when the violations he committed dropped on us.

And the much better roster was gone within a year, when they all either robbed a Pilot, flunked out, or just didn't wanna be here anymore.

I guess I'm different than everyone here. I hate that he left but I didn't think he was the right hire for us from the beginning. However, I think had he stayed we would have been very competative right now. He would have had the talent in here, the coaches and the atmosphere. In my personal opinion 2009 was a throw away year for him because of the UCLA game-that we should have won and the Ala game that he blew at the end.

As much as everyone wants to find something negative pertaining to CLK he had a plan and that plan consisted of some minor and secondary infractions but both he and Hammy knew that was going to happen and they both knew they were not goin to push it to major sanctions.
