Anarchy In Portland

Yes. The mayor of a liberal city has a delicate balancing act to follow. You have to be sensitive to the concerns of the peaceful protesters while also making it clear that vandalism, looting, arson and violence are unacceptable means. That is not the majority of the forms of "protest" but those are the people who garner the most attention... primarily from right-wing media.

And he has failed.

I agree that these local civic leaders are not doing enough to emphasize that laws will be enforced. A show of police force is necessary to stop people from using events of social protest as an excuse to steal and vandalize property. In Seattle and Portland, these mayors have fallen short of their civic duty.
Short?

You would have to believe they are actually trying which is questionable at this point.

They have chosen the political saftey over the safety of their citizens.

It isn’t a fair point. It misrepresentation of the situation. The Feds cannot just insert themselves without being invited in or enacting some draconian measures.

I believe the poster I quoted was trying to say DT is to blame. Not agreeing with that because the Mayor of Portland needs to do his job. 3 months of chaos in his city he was elected to oversee. Something eventually needs to be done. Sad that both sides cannot come up with a solution.

ONE SIDE HAS OFFERRED A SOLUTION!

Ok but the primary duty falls onto the locals. The mayor of Portland is blaming Trump out of one corner of his mouth while literally refusing Trump’s aid out of the other. Trump cannot intercede without an invitation. He cannot have it both ways.

I often like to equate real life to sports. How many times have we seen in sports when you allow an undermanned adversary to stay in the fight then you eventually find yourself in a fight?

The looting should've been stopped immediately but instead local government allowed it to fester to where the perpetrators gained some confidence, it grew and now it is harder to squelch without some real teeth.

It is times like these, when I am frequently disappointed by my party. It is possible to respect the voice of the peaceful protesters while also enforcing the law. Too often, latitude is given to those who exploit a social protest for their own selfish desires. I will still tell you that the voice of the peaceful protest is out there... but it is the right who would prefer to emphasize the acts of theft and vandalism.
