Anastasia Hayes dismissed.

I agree. I think Jaz can absorb most of Hayes production. I see Meme and Westbrook both being more effective this year.

I like Westbrook BBIQ, I think she is going to be good. Meme to me will set the tone for the guards this year, she is a Senior.

If she plays well we will play well. If she struggles our team will struggle.

Point guard, Marina Mabrey was Notre Dame point guard, with the four and and 5 out offense, everyone is a point guard. ijs.

Her speed and jumping ability made up for a lack of height I think if she was 5’8”/5’9” with her speed she could be deadly. I think maturity in seeing the game slow down will make her a pg with potential like moriah Jefferson from UConn she couldn’t shoot at first either but honed her craft and made defenses pay. I can’t think of a UT pg that reminded me of Hayes or I would have went with that comparison.

She needs to develop a pull up jumper and a three point shot...otherwise, she is at her ceiling as a scorer. Great at blowing by defenders and getting to the FT line, but a liability when defenses sagged off her and dared her to shoot. I honestly can't think of another player like her, at UT or otherwise. At least Jefferson had a good mid range jumper. Annie's only offense was all the way to the basket or from the FT line. She is a very one dimensional player, but could be very effective even with all the limitations to her game.

Jefferson didn’t have that til her junior year of college and she kept extending her range. She came by as a guard that could blow by and distribute. The fact she was on UCONN and had those scorers around her helped hide her deficiencies her first two years. Then she undoubtably became the best pg in the country. But I agree Annie needs to work on pull up (which from her vids she was working on) and jump shots which she was also.

Best of luck to her though. If UT can land Cooke she seemingly has a good pull up. Although you can’t rely on highlight vids. But she also has made two USA teams thus far. We shall see.

Question about players that have been dismissed. Do most coaches try and stay away from recruiting those players after they leave the program from which they were dismissed? I can see going after players like the girl from UCONN that went to MS - not dismissed for violations.

Geno kicked Espinoza-Hunter off of the UConn team. She did not leave voluntarily; she was dismissed. Do you honestly believe she wasn't repeatedly in violation of a team or university policy for UConn to take such a drastic action after less than one semester?

I didn't remember much of Moriah as a freshman, but as a sophomore she had a pretty complete game. Looking at her stats, she was shooting over 55% from the floor and 41% from deep as a sophomore.

I don't trust any highlight videos...I want to see how players perform at the next level. But if Tennessee lands Cooke, I hope she has better fundamentals than the last two "star" PGs they've signed...even if only briefly.

I hope some imagination creeps into this year's staff. Evina at the hi-post as a point-forward, with her passing and ability to use different moves.. When you got a player like that than can see the floor and pass through straw, use her as that!..We're talking Karl Malone here. Don't waste her at the point. She will get her bring downs....But, on the sets,, I'd run a hi-post and watch the duck-shoot.

Massengill can do what Annie did and is 5" taller... hopefully she can finish instead of hitting the brakes and crouching, Annie was prone to attack with no alternate plan. If you are going to the rack without a 2nd planned option, or a teammate who reads your attack and cuts with you, or something in this neighborhood,,,YOU have to finish.

Contact is going to happen, might as well be the one giving it!

Hey coach.... my daughter got invited to a scoutsfocus camp...Do you know anything about them? How legit are they and how do you got invited?

Thanks

Westbrook was like 4th in the league in assists. She needs better judgement yes but there is no denying she can see the floor. She also needs to shoot better. She was out assisting upperclassmen in the league. If she cuts down the turnovers she’ll be one of the best assisting pgs in the country.

I’d also be interested to see how many threes she shot her sophomore year. During her junior year she shot 49.6% from 3 and took 113 (making 56 threes). 41.9 percent is good but her shooting that good from three and 58.9 % overall during her junior year was when I remember her turning the corner really.

I was talking about Cooper, not Westbrook. I think Westbrook has all the potential in the world. She's got great floor vision, but needs to improve her BBIQ. Whereas Hayes turned the ball over alot from playing out of control, most of Evina's turnovers could have been avoided if she wasn't so casual with her passing.

For some reason, UConn's website doesn't list stats from Moriah's sophomore year. I will say that the games I did see from that season, I thought she was already the best PG in the league.

Is that what it was...marijuana? If that's the case, I twould think the NCAA would ban her and it wouldn't be at the discretion of receiving schools to take a chance on her.

No, the NCAA only bans a player for a drug test if the failed test occurs at an NCAA postseason event.

Gotcha cooper was more of a 2 guard in high school distributed becuz she was a better passer than everyone else but not elite. Yup, I looked too and doesn’t have it. The best guard in their league the American conference i don’t know how to really take that but she was def the best in the country her junior and senior years.

I haven't heard of them, but then, they probably have never heard of me.

I ran mine to do the same thing any successful coach does, to find talent, athletes, "hunger"
That was early on.

Then a funny thing happened, I began to care.
I began to run them to per-fect my teaching system.
That was where and when I began to look at mechanics and how to teach and fix them.

Now I teach a "facing out at the elbow, ball in triple-threat,,,,Timed movement from 1st flinch to ball on glass doing a one-dribble layup and has to be executed in under a second."

You want whats best for your daughter, make her the best she can be before you expose her to "experts"

No one is talking about the fact that Annie might need some help. If it is marijuana (and I’m not saying it is) and I was her parent I would try to get to the bottom of why she’s self-medicating. I’m actually concerned for her as a human being and not a basketball player for my favorite team. She is kind and sensitive and I’m sure leaving the team has been so hard for her. I hope she moves beyond this and has a wonderful life.

My daughter is a sophomore and a starting local varsity Point guard....scoutsfocus is a showcase event which I understand some/most are just money making events so was curious how she got this specific invite. Although she hasnt done the specific drill that you described, I am pretty positive that she could complete that task. Right now as part of her daily work, she performs a move above the 3 point line and tries to complete the drive to the lay up in one dribble.

That drive as well should take exactly one second ,,, timed, from first flinch to ball on glass.

You have to understand that what ever level you come in on, in exposure basketball, sets you up for playing with girls of the same caliber at that moment... If she is a borderline player and has to play down with B players,,,her development stops for that timespan. She is playing with girls of her own skill, not better.

I say if she's an A level player, let her shine.
But if there is any doubt,
find out.

I remember Lindsay Harding having to sit a year out at Duke becuz she kept breaking team violations. She worked her way as a scout person and earned her way back onto the team (she redshirted that year as well). She came back for her senior year and was the national player of the year and led her team to the national championship game. I wish more teams/players take that route. Work thru it and earn it back.

LOL, I meant women's college basketball. Best PG in the American Conference is a pretty low standard to reach.

Ah, ok. They must have changed the rules. I remember there was a Michigan men's player who tested positive for marijuana and got a 6 month suspension from the NCAA, but that was probably about 5 years ago.

My daughter is probably going to end up being a D2 level player although she has held her own against players offered by high majors. She is just 5'6" but also extremely fast....she is working hard on improving finishing around the rim, overall shooting, and fine tuning her handle.

Officially, she left the team of her own accord. IIRC, Geno trashed her during an interview and insinuated that she was asked to leave the program. Reading between the lines, it sounded more like him telling her she wasn't a fit for the program as opposed to her violating a policy...maybe bad practice habits or something. Still, not a good look for him to trash her like that, but I suppose that's to be expected.

Amen! Moriah Jefferson may not have been a three point shooter at first but from what i recall she took care of the ball and was not as turnover prone as Hayes, either. Hayes’ turnovers were tough to watch last season.

Why not aim for D1
If she is "extremely fast" that makes her a speed guard.
D1 is in need of such players too.

Can she go from baseline to glass in 4.4?
(Time her from BL to BL without the ball and BL to glass on a layup...The time should vary maybe .2-less of a second)
If the time is more than 1/4 of a second difference she isn't ready.

Just because someone says she is D2 doesn't mean she is.
Its up to her. And you.

I will test her out and see what she can do it in.
