From today's press conference:
"Devrin Young, who was a running back in the past will be moved to slot receiver and so he will get some repetitions in the slot and we'll move him, you might see him at running back as well, but right now he's getting full repetitions that he needs to learn the slot position. We moved Brent Brewer to linebacker. Brent has done a great job, he's had a tremendous spring. Another individual who we've made a change in positions is a true freshman, Corey Vereen. We moved him to our defensive end position. We need some disruptive, quick playmakers on the edge of our defense and so we look to him. Also, Jacques Smith will be more in our Leo defensive line position, Justin King at tight end, just to name a few. I'm very encouraged so far with what I've seen from Brent (Brewer), he's doing a great job."

What did he mean by saying Brewer has had a tremendous Spring? Off season workouts?

Young to slot might be a good move--agree, get him the ball in space. Like the Brewer and Smith moves, too. I don't think Smith has the instincts to play outside--has never found it.

I like putting Brewer at LB. I think his hard-hitting style will suit his talents there better than in the secondary. His aggressiveness burned him in the secondary in the past.

I love taking a safety and making him a linebacker. Coverage skills to go along with run stopping abilities

I like these moves as well. Brewer has played a lot of football and is a very aggressive player by nature. So I could see this move paying huge dividends.

Also Devrin Young. IMO Chaney didn't know how to use DY. Anyone in their right mind knows he's a change of pace type back. So what did we do with him? Run him right between the tackles every single time we gave him the ball. He's gonna be really difficult for a defender to cover in space.

Playing to individual strengths...I was jazzed about the 3-4...running back to the forgiving arms of the 4-3

The article may just be coach-speak but I don't think so. From what I read, Butch and company come across as not mere coaches, but teachers. From what i read, Butch seems very methodical and develop centered. One thing I'm glad to see is mention of a nutritionist AND players actually adhering to the regime. I mentioned last year the need for this and get them off junk food. Georgia figured this out last year as well. Lost of body fat and muscle increase means a faster team all around.

If this staff coaches as well as they talk, the rest of the SEC is in big trouble, Bamma included. We may not necessarily win the SECeast, but I think we will be in every game right up to the final whistle.

I hope Brewer takes advantage of his speed in this position. It also helps if we need him to drop back into coverage as well.

Devin should make a great slot receiver if he had decent hands. I wonder if he will return kick offs or punts?

Moving Vereen to DE and moving Brewer to LB to me shows that we're returning to the Chavis/ U of Miami style of defensive , where the DE's are what used to be interior LB's, the exterior LB's are what used to be safeties, and the safeties are what used to be the slower CB's and the CB's are the fastest players on the team, outside the WR's. If so, I like it because if ever a year showed that speed is of the essence in football, it was the horror show that was last year's D.

The BB and DY moves are no-brainers to me. BB has always been a hard hitter, but lacked SEC speed in the defensive backfield. DY greatest asset, is his ability in the open field. Makes one wonder why the old staff didn't see what was obvious to most. In regards to JS, I have doubts this guy will ever contribute much. He and Corey Miller were two of the most prized recruits when they signed, and a strong argument could be made that both have been busts up to this point.

I really like Justin King at TE he would be a big TE and I think has a chance to make an impact. He showed last year what he can do with the ball in his hands. I also like the idea of Corey Vereen Playing the Leo position I think he will end up being a good player for us.

Brewer played some safety last year at spring practice--does anyone recall why he moved back to safety?

What is the Leo dl position

I was curious about this too and did a little digging. Here's what I found, courtesy of Pete Carroll.

"The open side Defensive End has to be one of your best football players. Size does not matter as much. We want an athletic player who can move around."

That's coupled with a Nose Tackle (McCullers), pass rushing tackle (Couch? Walls? Saulsberry?) and a "hand in the dirt" end who is responsible for the C gap in the run game (Miller/Williams?).

It's funny that Brewer was originally a class of '06 WR prospect committed to Fsu. He's now, in 2013 playing lb at UT.. Funny how things work out..
