4-3 that disguises 5-2 or 3-4 elements/looks. Interior shifts for example from a 1 tech & 3 tech into a 2 tech. LEO (hybrid LB/DE) plays wide in between a 7 and 9 tech.
My understanding of the Leo defense is that it is another form of the under front. Under fronts really blurs the line between 43/34. Because you now move the strong end down to a 5 technique. And then the SLB (probably Maggitt) comes up to a 9 technique.
This leaves you with only two lbs. The Will (Brewer) and the Mike (AJ). And 5 guys on the line of scrimmage.
What is the Leo dl position
The "Leo" position is a Defensive End who stands up rather than lining up in a down position. He plays on the weak side of the line and his primary job is the pass rush. This should play well to Smith's skill set.
Looking at these moves, we're definitely going to get faster and meaner on Defense this year. This is going to be a fun defense to watch.
I don't know much about the Leo defense, I was just talking about how Carroll ran the Seahawks D. I'm sure there are plenty of variations, but the Leo in the Hawks D was either Chris Clemons or Bruce Irvin and they almost always had a hand down. KJ Wright at SLB, Leroy Hill at WLB, and Bobby Wagner at MLB. It was a fun D to watch.
