Another bad apple (George Floyd case)

Holy ****. I just watched the full 10 minute video. This officer is a complete and total POS. Anybody bringing up resisting or drugs or bad checks can honestly GTFO. There is no excuse for that. That officer deserves to be thrown under the jail. This is ridiculous.

From what I've read, most agree this was well beyond SOP. It's the response by those "affected". Steal it, burn it and destroy it is not my first choice for having the rest of us understanding their message.

I don’t know. After watching it I’m pretty F’ing pissed off. We all should be. I don’t know about looting and what not, but some sort of point needs to be made. That was some BS. Everyone in the video was telling the Cops for 10 minutes they were killing that guy, the cops were just completely indifferent to it. It’s so infuriating and there is no way the cops didn’t know what they were doing.

Okay. So considering all the cops were fired and will likely be charged, who else should pay? Aside from the business owners of Minneapolis.

What the police officers did was wrong and they deserve to be charged, but nothing justifies rioting and looting as protest. That's insane, and does nothing to help their message.
Let me address this, because I'm sure this is a common sentiment and on the surface, it seems like a reasonable, commonsense position to take.

Lets step away for one moment from the protests/riots in Minneapolis and look at the protests that occurred in Michigan. You had armed, middle class mostly white citizens storming the Michigan statehouse. Now, storming the statehouse with guns is not reasonable, nor does it help their message. But what these middle class white protesters should be thinking about or what should have occurred to them is that their govt did not waver and did not budge. In fact, the governor of that state doubled down on the ignorance and extended the lockdowns. even with armed insurgents at the gates, the govt does not respect their protests. That is because that deep down, these govts are betting on you just being loud and boisterous for a little while, but eventually, the protesters will submit. They don't really want that smoke... they don't really want to pull the trigger on their oppressors. They have jobs, families and house payments. they really don't want to disrupt their lives too much by having to fight the system. hey, I'm certainly guilty of that myself.

Now, back to the protests/riots in Minneapolis. These people are mostly middle to lower middle class folks. Mostly black, but surprisingly, a significant number of white people are in the crowds, also. Now there are two opinions you can have of these people... and neither opinion speaks well about our country. Either these people are really fed up with the violence and feel that they have no other way of making a change within the system (writing their congressman, voting, etc.). Their only option, in their minds is to just riot and disrupt the system. That is one opinion. The other opinion is not much better, that being that you just have a group of people that are taking advantage of a situation and are going out here just looting and causing chaos just for the sake of doing something for clout chasing or virtue signaling or for the fun of it. That is a problem, especially with the amount of non-blacks that are in these crowds. We have a lost generation of people who feel they have nothing to lose.

To your point about advancing or helping their message. In a sane and just world, the words you are saying would be 110% on the mark. But right now, I just think that you have enough people on the outside of hope, prosperity and justice that simply don't give a damn about what anyone thinks about them and are more than willing to take it to the level that the protesters in Michigan were not willing to take it to.

I don’t know. That is also infuriating. Nothing can be done. Local businesses shouldn’t be paying for it, I agree. It’s bad all the way around.

It’s sad that the only thing that can be done is a couple of police officers getting fired and (maybe) charged.

The businesses getting looted had nothing to do with the man's death. The people having their property destroyed had nothing to do with the man's death. Lawlessness isn't the way to protest against the police. What those police officers did to that man was 100% wrong, and they deserve to go to jail. I have no problem with a peaceful protest to push that message. But using it as an excuse to steal a new TV or whatever is false outrage. Hell, it just encourages police to beat more people up. So idiotic.

This may take some heat but I can buy it.

This is weird. Chauvin and Floyd likely knew each other. They both worked security at a local bar. Chauvin for 17 years. Bar owner said he was a loose cannon.

They should absolutely be charged.

I usually read through these threads but don't post.
First of all its my opinion that all cops involved should be in jail. Protests are fine but the looting and burning needs to stop. It helps nobody.

To me, the chief difference is that the protests in Michigan were conducted with a modicum of civility. This, going on right now? It’s just animals being animals.

And which one was more heavily decried by the media?
