Any for a 50-spot??

In case you forgot, it was '96 and Memphis had a top 5 defense and Coach Fulmer decided to run the ball at the wrong times, although Peyton had over 300 yards passing. I wouldn't call a 4 point loss getting your arse handed to ya. Don't forget about the blown call on the kick return when the runner was down by contact, the kick defense players let up when they saw the runner go down and the refs missed it..

My bad on the "typo" year. I just call it the way I see it...so what if they had a top 5 defense...coming from C-USA that doesn't say much considering the caliber of teams they played. We had a kick-butt offense that year playing SEC defenses. Does that somehow equal out? I do not think so.....
I was there in awe wondering what the hell just happened along with the rest of VOL faithful. They out played us that day. I am as Orange as they come, but their runner was not down due to contact, godly intervention, etc. The return was an espy nomination that year, it would not have made this spotlight if the runner was down. Our kick return coverage has never been extraordinary. gotta play to the whistle, not when you think a whistle should sound.

I guess the espy nomination board missed it too then......

You got anymore excuses why we lost? Was it the fans? Smokey? The Weather? Family Dog die?

Could it have been they made plays and we didn't?

Coaching......

I was thinking about this 50 thing and another reason came to me. With the rule changes with the clock it is going to be hard to get enough possessions to pull a fifty spot. Has anyone done it this season against another D1 opp. I think so but I am not sure.

I think USC put up an even 50 on Arkansas......

The only thing you got right was the coaching zinger. Have a good friend who's brother is an NCAA football official (and an ardent Memphis fan). Was at a party at his house about a month later and asked him about the kick return in question. He was in Houston getting ready for a game and caught the play in question. He later called the official (was a friend of his) that was in position to make the call and told him he missed the call and the guy in town agreed after viewing the tape. The reason the call was missed: By rule if any part of the runners body touches the ground, other than the soles of his feet or the palms of his hands, he is down by contact. It has been conceded the return man stopped his fall by landing on his elbow. I was in the end zone where it happened and thought at the time the guy had bounced off a trampoline after getting knocked on his arse. But I guess you are right, if ESPN made it an Espy play then it must have been all good.

Well then.....believe what you will. We have had calls fall in our favor (the Florida game when a personal foul was called on Dallas Baker. The officials also mistakenly stopped the clock after the penalty with 55 seconds remaining. This allowed us the time to get in field goal range and win on field goal attempt) as well as against us (gaffney's supposed catch). Should I go on?
I watched the play in question of the Memphis game several times myself looking for an officiating flaw. It was not clear as in the previously mentioned calls that the call on the field was missed, but since you have a best friend with a brother who's in the NCAA officiating circle......his version must be the gospel.

Well then.....believe what you will. We have had calls fall in our favor (the 04 Florida game when Heffney slapped Baker and upon Bakers retaliation, he got the personal foul. This allowed us to get in field goal range and win on the attempt. I think there were also officiating issues with the clock in this game, but you might wish to call your brothers friend for verification) & (Colquitt's leg trip of 06 was a missed call in our favor) as well as against us (gaffney's supposed catch). There are plenty more.......

I'm done on this thread......attention will be focused on tomorrows game.

I think the replay clearly showed that the guy was falling down and his forearm and elbow stopped his fall and he spun back to his feet. It was an incredibly athletic maneuver . . . which shouldn't have mattered since by rule a forearm or elbow touching the ground is the same as a knee being down.

Memphis got us that day and it never should have been that close, but it was what it was . . . a gift.

Memphis won't get that close today, I'd bank on that.....They have no D`Angelo Williams and he was the majority of their offense last year and this is an improved team for UT this year, don't see this one being close

Exactly my point....we will score 50 and prove that we are a top 10 team even with the painful loss to Florida.

Yeah, we may be much improved from last year, but we have a bad habit of playing down on our opponents level...I don't see us hanging 50 on them but I don't think it will be close.....I'm thinking about like the Marshall game just not as many mistakes.....Only 30 more minutes til game time....GO VOLS!!!

I don't think we play down on our opponents level today. Yes we do have a tendancy to do that, I guess to keep up the other schools morale or something, but we have Georgia coming up. Even with the two Freshman QBs they have they still have a Top 5 Defense and if we don't hang 40-50 on Memphis we will not scare them or have them concerned. I want us to dominate Memphis 52-14 to show Georgia that they need to be prepared for what we can do and not look over us. We have the tools and we have the carpenters, but we need to build a house today in order to prove we belong on top on the SEC East and the Top 10 in the Nation.

We don't need to scare Georgia, I'm sure they know how good we can be......We're really their first true test of the season, they're not going to over look us....We really better start hangin the points now, 3-0 going in to the 2nd qurater

We might have hit 50 if we didn't turn it over and if we could field punts.

Especially after that first half when we couldn't seem to get it in the endzone.

Very very true. I just wish would could have hit the homeruns earlier in the game since Memphis were on their heels the entire 2nd half. Granted they were tired but that didn't stop them from keeping Fulmer out of the endzone since I know for a fact he called those lameduck running plays on the goalline. We could have bootlegged our play actioned right there but since Fulmer believes in the run SO much we didn't score because of it. I think we could have got in, but its not hard for an opposing team to figure out what we will do in those situations, since you can watch game film from 10 years ago till today and you will find the same thing.

I thought that those punts were good opportunities to get our offense some reps but I wish we wouldn't let them bounce 20 yards and then have to bring it out from inside the 5 yard line every drive

After Taylor let that first punt go that rolled to the 1 I told my buddy at the game that he wouldn't be returning punts anymore today. Sure enough on the next Memphis punt Hefney was back there and did his job. A couple of punts later I noticed Taylor was back again and I'll be dammed if he didn't let another one go that rolled to the 3 yard line. C'mon Lucas!! :nono:

Ok Ok, I am just getting in. We should have scored 52 points. I am so damn frustrated with Lucas Taylor, I could just hurt him. He dropped a pass at the 3 on 3rd down on our first possesion, which caused us to kick a field goal. now thats is - 4 and then I am also frustrated with Montario Hardesty's style of running. We didn't score on the 1 yard line on a 4th & 1, now we're - 11. However we scoed 41. I told you all that we would score 50 and by right we should have.
