VolQuest.com - Five questions for juco national championship
any chance UT might still sign him next year?
Chris Jones just received JV player of the year. As everyone knows he's going to Louisville. I read the post below on another forum and thought I would share it here. It's from a very reputable poster, but take it as you want. It's not my post, just a copy and paste. Supposedly, a direct message from Forbes. I thought it to be interesting.
This is where I don't agree with you at all, because I do not believe Jones ever stated that he would have no interest in attending UT after completing two years at NWF. As a matter of fact, I believe there was interest on the parts of both Jones and Martin toward his coming here after NWF, which our coaching staff failed to pursue and follow through with.
In June of 2012, Steve Forbes contacted me via a Twitter direct message, requesting my email address, telling me he would like to explain his failure to reply to a tweet I had sent him in December of 2011, asking him if UT had been involved in recruiting Jones. I sent him my gmail address, and on Saturday, June 30 I received from him a very detailed message more than 1600 words long about interactions of his with Martin and staff concerning Jones and also about some things he'd read regarding UT not recruiting Jones at NWF.
Forbes made the following points in his very lengthy missive:
1. Forbes told Jones upon his arrival at NWF in the summer of 2011 that he would assist CJ in any way possible in getting into any program he chose after finishing at NWF. Forbes also stated that he knew how much CJ liked UT, and so he had no intention of trying to steer CJ away from UT or any program CJ was interested in. Forbes also said he told CJ he did not feel it was his job to deliver him to UT, which would have to re-recruit him. After that meeting, Forbes said he thought there was a "good chance" that Jones would return to UT in two years.
2. Forbes said Tracey Webster phoned him in late November or early December of 2011 about recruiting CJ. Forbes stated he made clear to Webster that he welcomed UT recruiting any of his players at any time, because he held nothing against the new staff, since they had nothing to do with Pearl and staff being fired from UT. Forbes stated he and Webster had known each other for a long time and had a pleasant conversation. According to Forbes, no one from UT followed up in any way after that phone call.
3. During the evening of January 21, 2012 on the same day that UT beat UConn, Forbes said he was in Memphis recruiting at a high school tournament. Martin also happened to be at the same tournament, and Forbes said he introduced himself to Martin. He said he told Martin that CJ was an outstanding player and loved UT, and he indicated that Martin was interested in getting down to NWF to see Jones play. Forbes said he told Martin his "door was always open for him and his staff" and that they had a pleasant visit. According to Forbes, despite Martin's stated interest no one from UT followed up after that meeting.
4. Forbes then directly addressed my Twitter question from December 2011, when I had inquired whether he had heard from UT about recruiting Chris Jones:
"Is UT recruiting Chris?" The answer is quite simply "No, and they never have." The reasons behind that sits totally in the lap of UT. They have no obligation to explain their reasons to me or Chris. UT has the right to recruit whoever they wish. I have no problem with that and fully understand their desire to look elsewhere for a PG. But it bothers me when I read things like: "Chris is not Coach Martin's type of player" , "Forbes wouldn't let UT recruit him", "Forbes is trying to get a job with Jones", "Chris Jones it too old and a bad kid".
Let me say this, if Chris Jones is not the type of player that Coach Martin wants in his program than I've totally misread Coach Martin and everything that has been written about him. I was under the impression he liked tough kids who cared more about winning than themselves? I've never coached a kid who cares more about winning than Chris Jones. He is a lock down defender and a fabulous offensive players. He's everything you would ever want in a PG. If he continues to improve like I think he will, I and many others believe he will play in the NBA someday. As you have read above, I have bent over backwards to let UT know they can recruit any of my players at anytime. Chris Jones doesn't need me to get a HM offer and I don't need Chris Jones to get a HM job. I recently turned down a HM job as I don't miss the BS that goes along with the coaching and recruiting at that level. It's not to say I won't return to that level someday but it won't be because of a Chris Jones "package deal".
Chris Jones is not perfect, he's a young man trying to find his way but he is growing up right before our eyes. He's never been in trouble with the law but like a lot of kids, he did not see the importance of an education at an early age. He is working hard in the classroom to fix that and he fully understands at the college level it's "Books and Basketball".

Thanks for posting. That's interesting to hear.
Not sure I believe it though. The only way I see UT not reaching out to Jones is if the staff wasn't comfortable or something happend with Martin's staff and Forbes. As bad as we need a PG, signing Landry and looking around at others, it's hard to believe we wouldn't contact one of the best JUCO guards in the country who was coming to Tennessee prior to Pearls firing.
I'm sure there's more to the whole thing. Could be that even though how great CJ is, CCM may have just wanted a complete clean break from CBP and his previous staff. CJ recommitting to CCM and UT before going to JC does kind of sting. Seems like there was a foundation of a relationship at one time. Something happened IMO and we probably will never know.

He has a pretty good defense of the kid throughout, except for this point. All he could say is that "he has never been in trouble with the law" and that he is "growing up". That is a pretty good example in itself, by his lame defense of that part.
But apart from that, even since Pearl's staff was having him in for visits when his recruitment started, the rumors I heard about him were that he was a punk kid, and was into a lot of "shady" things. He was compared to Ramar Smith, if that tells you anything.
