Anyone heard about this with Nico and parents

Why would someone struggling to pay their bills worry themselves over a kid playing football?
$8 million to me means he is no longer a 'kid' and no longer 'playing'. He is a highly compensated professional. JMHO

I truly hope he is a good guy that is caught in the middle of a bunch of greedy people.

Nico and his family met with people but it wasn’t because of wanting “more money”. He wanted to know the plan in place for the offense going forward

"People"? What "people"? I'm guessing that CJH would gladly suit down with him any time of the day or night. And wtf does his family have to do with it?

And? There was a time I had very little extra money and I still never prioritized what pro athletes were making over my bills. If you aren't donating then there's no real effect on your life

So the media is supposed to exist to be the propaganda arm of the University? Also, people are hearing the bad stuff on the recruiting trail long before it hits the media here. Nothing said on a local radio show will make that big of a difference
Look how it's done in other cities. The Knoxville media has always seemed to go out of their way to make sure the bad things are over reported. For some reason they've had an adversarial relationship with the UTAD and that was when they were just about the only game in town. The new ones trying to make a name for themselves seem worse. The constant demand for content, any content, has driven many to the gutter

Always the fans or the media that’s at fault. Give me a break.

The NCAA in its typical lack of foresight unleashed at complete cluster***k on college athletics. This isn’t sustainable
I think they did it on purpose because they were cut out of their golden age. Intentionally opening up the portal to multiple transfers is a crap show.

They were getting beat legally and knew they could not change it and they became an HR only vs a governing body with no bite. So they slung the doors wide open.

The ncaa had decades to address this and didn't. Everyone saw it coming but they tried to hold on to power for as long as they could. The ncaa was never operating with the best interests of the athletes in mind

Shame this is where the NIL is going right now. Controls are badly needed.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Per sources to xxxxxx and confirmed by Will West of The Sports Animal, Iamaleava’s family, not Nico, lobbied for more money following the season than they had previously been promised when he was recruited from California in the Vols’ 2023 class. In the NIL era, contracts are about as helpful as a missed pass block on the field. Sure, they’re there, but they’re just a whiff of what could have been.

One has to wonder if the Vols should have let Iamaleava walk and spent the massive amount of money he’s costing Tennessee on other positions, either to keep current players, like receiver Mike Matthews, who also reportedly asked for a raise, to keep current Vols in their current roles or go get transfers to bolster the roster.

Would you rather have a handful of good players or a pretty good quarterback? That was the quandary, especially since the Vols are currently trying to bring NIL spending in-house and, hopefully, stick to some sort of NIL budget. That has been a challenge.

Per sources, Iamaleava’s family was the driving force behind the forced raise, and he felt caught in the middle. There is absolutely no indication that Iamaleava is anything but a perfect teammate, but agents and parents do what agents and parent do. They look out for their own, even if it is to a fault.
Should be themselves.

I suspect his parents/family made the first deal or were extremely involved because of his age at the time. It's understandable that they might negotiate for him, whether he is directly involved or not.

I simply said the Knoxville media sucks and has for as long as I can remember. It's handled differently than in other major college cities
There’s nothing wrong with the reporting of this. Explains a lot. I’m actually amazed at the job Heupel did to get this team to 10 wins. Fans shouldn’t be surprised or concerned that this season will probably be Nico’s last as vol. No matter what kind of season he has.

The point is, Nico is the highest paid plaster on the team. What was your point about not paying the qb?
You're stating the obvious. The article suggested not paying Nico and letting him walk to pay Matthews. I said that was idiotic. Your comment was redundant.

I understand them paying Nico to stay. Was he worth the pay raise? I think that’s perfectly ok to debate.

All those that are complaining about this need to look at from a different perspective. What if your son or daughter was the one involved, and agents were calling saying we can get you more money. Here is your valuation, we have "X" number of schools that are willing to pay this amount for your services.

You would not be very wise not to listen to the sales pitch. Nothing is sports is guaranteed. An injury can occur at any time. Make hay while the sun shines. This is not the players or parents' fault. They are simply doing what any financial advisor would advise a person to do.

Agreed. I just hope any input from dad about changing the coaching philosophy is totally ignored. If/when he decides to transfer, I still wish him the best.

My point exactly, you just said it better. The NCAA basically stated you took my piggy bank and we will make you pay. You can have the change but we want to retain the green stuff and tell you how to run your ship or we will impose more rules.

Lawsuits later with losses turns into the NCAA taking to the Nuclear Option of screwing things up. We will just blow this NIL and Portal and eligibility rules up because that is the only way they survive.

Now the question becomes for the Conferences is "What to do?" Unite and form a league of their own in a business Model similar to the NFL or stand by and watch? Does the break away include all sports or just football.

NCAA is just a figurehead at this point and a bystander with authority over rules. Totally incompetent.

It's simple really.

If an engineer at TVA is making $100k based on the salary and demand at the time they were employed AND fresh out of school engineers are now being hired by TVA at $150k, the engineer with experience is going to bristle at green, inexperienced engineers getting more money than they do with experience.

Salary adjustments are common when the demand for labor causes entry level wages to have to go up.

Supply and demand raise wages and not just for new hires.

Major college QBs with less or similar talent and experience are making more than Nico so renegotiating his pay is normal.

Can't wait to be reminded about this every time the camera man pans over to the Iamaleava family next year. Here we are in a playoff run, and his family is flirting with Oregon and Miami on the side.

I like the kid, but he isn't worth a pay raise. He was the ~7th best QB in the SEC this year, which is a year where the league is down.
I mentioned in a thread posted after the OSU beat down something had to happen in the locker room. The team didn't look the same as the season even though they had 3 weeks to get ready. Our OL looked like cardboard cutouts. So bad, it actually looked like they were allowing the OSU DL to come right through.

After reading this story, it all makes sense what showed on the field against OSU. I'm sure this was going around the locker room the three weeks leading up to the game.
