Anyone with insight to how this played out??

As the fan of a rival, it's rude to post this - not to mention, without any additional comment by you, it's just stupid - I don't think anyone puts much weight in an agent's public comments given the two stories cited above. I can play that game, too.

If you look at all of my other posts on the subject, you'll see that I meant no disrespect with the post. My objective with the link was to show a previous poster that Gruden had no interest in the job and, thus, some Vol fans should get past "Grudenmania" and embrace the coach that you have hired.

My apologies if I offended anyone. That wasn't my intention. :hi:

One of the two sources has to be less than truthful. Doesn't really matter now which one it is. My stance all along is that JG would not be a college coach. It just didn't make sense that he would take a step down from the pros and/or MNF. This is the only source that I've heard this side from. All of the other sources indicated that "Grudenmania" was a big rumor mill. All I know now is that UT has a HC and it ain't him.

My other question about this link is, if UT could have hired JG, why didn't they? Seems the entire Volnation was behind it. They could have ponied up the money from donations from this site alone. :hi:

Also, here is an interesting article...

Rules pertaining to hiring NFL coaches - Windy City Gridiron

So... either at some point the NFL changed the rule in regards to lateral moves or all the other info I heard and found was false. I also found a good read on nfl.com written by Jason La Canfora, titled; Changing coaching staffs isn't as easy for teams as it once was, the following is from his article;

Unless a coach already under contract is being interviewed for a head coaching job, or a personnel exec is being interviewed for a promotion to general manager that would involve final say on personnel, their existing team can block any meeting. Many out there think that only a lateral move can be blocked. That is not true on the coaching or personnel side.

The point being that if you believe that Gruden was talking to other pro coaches in prep for putting together a staff, it could have been a staff for college football. Otherwise, we would be violating anti-tampering rules.

The fact is that HC's and EX HC's are permitted to contact potential staff without permission from that coaches club. Additionally, You cannot under any circumstances talk to a coach during the season!!! So the only staff he could have been assembling was for a COLLEGE STAFF.

Also, it was widely reported that Gruden was putting together a staff from numerous legitimate Sport's Media. If Gruden was trying to put together an NFL staff, Goodell would have hammered with fines, suspensions and possible loss of draft picks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hart, Cheek and A few certain boosters screwed the deal with Gruden because they were afraid of an eight year deal!!!!

A year from now you will look back and realize how silly this conspiracy theory sounds, especially when the truth trickles out more and more. Its only been a little over a week and I feel silly for believing the things I did.

We all choose to believe what we want to believe.

If you want to believe the Knox Sport's Media that is your choice. They have been schilling for the Ath. Dept. for years - and you know as well as I do they tow the company line!

I choose to believe a reporter in Chattanooga who put his reputation on the line. Not one single media person in the greater Knoxville area ever put his or her rep on the line about anything they reported during the entire search. Knox Media were chasing their collective tails throughout the coaching search.

I guess it is easier on your faculties to believe that BJ is the best that UT could instead of believing how close Tennessee was to hitting a home run but would not pull the trigger.

But again, you and others like you share your opinion and that is fine. Likewise, there are people like me that believe differently. As for me, I expect better - I strive for excellence in my professional and personal life. I do not see excellence at any level within UT's AD nor it Administration.

I don't understand the "name on the line" bs. He won't lose his job. His Twitter has more followers. He'll get more pub. Big deal if he is wrong. Basilio, clay, etc are wrong all the time and have attention that a beat writer can't get. He reported based on supposed sources. Those sources just happened to be misinformed or passed along bad info.

Like I said in a week or two, no one will remember the Gruden article except a few die hards. It doesn't matter, people put out false information all the time....sources are sometimes proven false and when they are the journalist is never culpable.

I keep asking this and none of you True Gruden Believers can explain it. If the boosters really put Gruden on a sliver platter and Hart & Cheek refused to do it, went over their heads, hired somebody else against their wishes, why did Jim Haslam's plane go to Louisville as part of the effort to hire Charlie Strong? If you tell your kid he can't go to the Big Drinking Party and he tells you to FO and stomps out of the house, do you let him borrow the keys to your car?

Jim Haslam was apprehensive with Gruden's demand for an eight year deal. Hart seized upon Haslam's apprehension's because for whatever reason he never wanted to hire Jon which ultimately lead to a riff between big money donors. The donors which supported the Gruden hire have made it clear to Hart that their wallets are closed to Hart.

Regardless of what I say or whether the Grudenites reveal their sources, you will say that the info is fabricated or misconstrued because the AD would never lie to you. And that BJ was the number one target all along notwithstanding his actions to supposedly hire Gundy, Strong and Fedora.

Again I will say that you choose to believe who and what you want and so do I. There is one fact you cannot argue; the Ath Dept and the Admin is a complete cluster fk. The Athletic Department is/was very close to bankruptcy. The financial commitment from the University is a band aide. Season tix sales for football this year were the lowest in years and 2013 will see even less season ticket sales.

Anyway, to each their own.

Da plane! Da plane!

I think this is an error in the definition of "big money". Sure the boosters spinning this story everywhere are pissed, they look foolish especially when they maintained the story past Friday when the attempted contact by UT was declined. That was the time to see the light imo, regardless.

Uh, if the Haslams weren't on board, then the Gruden deal was dead in the water regardless of how angry the other donors are about it.

I don't believe that "the AD would never lie to me" anymore than I automatically believe what I read on a message board. You're just butthurt because you bought into a fantasy and it fell apart. Gruden was pretty obviously in play on some level, but it was never anywhere near the done deal that the message board warriors claimed. Yet people bought into it like Jonestown.

You'll get no argument from me about the relationship between athletics and academics at UTK being poisonous.

There you go, start throwing the insults around!!!

You would think that as a moderator you would display a little more class!

You're the one who was presumptuous enough to tell me what I would believe. So I was presumptuous enough to describe your state of mind. Just because I'm a moderator doesn't mean I've been emasculated and can't argue anymore.

If you think "butthurt" is a terrible insult, the internet may not be for you.

Your choice of words indicates that you lack any degree of class.

Not exactly. See Dan Rather for what can happen to a journalist's career based solely on a bad source.

You need to just let it go. Get behind your team and coach and give him a chance. If you are as successful as you say, at one point someone did that for you. Dudes a winner.

Any OG's care to share some insight to how this played out with gruden? Seemed so close to signing him but what went wrong, how did we end up with CBJ?

Why would you come on here to ask the people that were wrong about it in the first place? They'll just make up another answer.

I'm brokenhearted that you think so. All over "butthurt"? My four-year old girl has a thicker skin than you do.

You implied multiple times that anybody who doesn't accept what you think is naive and will just swallow whatever they're told by the AD. You should expect some pushback.
