Are we ever going to catch Georgia?

Coaching recruiting strength and conditioning, that’s where we lack currently. If we are not battling it out with UGA/BAMA for recruits we are recruiting the wrong guys to compete with them. CJH is in yr 3 and the team has turned into a finesse team which is fine if you have athleticism to make it work. We are not very strong minded or strong bodied. UGA/BAMA linemen both sides are ripped and fast, ours have belly fat and slow. We have 1 SEC assistant CRG and that’s it, makes sense why we can compete with MAC level schools but not SEC schools

Playing Georgia's schedule from the past two seasons would probably be a great start.
who have the Vols played this year or last that UGA didn’t play, except Bama. They played all the same east teams, they played LSU in the seccg. If you say ATM I would say Ole Miss counters that. Scheduling is a poor excuse.

Thread says it. Are we ever really going to catch them? I don’t think so. People can talk about the portal and NIL all you want. It’s not
Leveling anything. All it’s doing is making the rich richer. I mean how long has it been since we have owned UGA? Well let’s look at facts.

Since 2000, we are 6-18 against UGA. And let’s face facts. The UGA that Heupel is going against is VASTLY better than ANY UGA team Fulmer or anyone else faced. I mean Butch beat UGA in 2015 and 2016. I mean really? That was Riches last year and Kirby’s first ever with a true FR QB. In 2016 we needed a pure luck play to beat them.

We know UGA will recruit nothing less than top 3 from here on out. So how do we overcome that?
The biggest needs this staff has to address are QB, OL, and DL. We all hope that QB has already been answered with Nico and Merklinger coming in the next class. UGA’s OL absolutely manhandled our defensive front the entire game. Beck who is really good BTW, had a clean pocket to the throw just about every time he dropped back to pass. Hell, one of the biggest strengths of our team is the DL and they looked completely outmatched. Their DL did the exact same thing to our OL. It’s going to take some time to stack talented depth like that.

They beat a good Ole Miss team who would take us behind the woodshed and Mizz, who spanked the Vols. They also played FL who beat us by two scores. We played a similar schedule except Bama, who they will play in two weeks.

I'm mostly with you, but 2016 wasn't just a luck fluke play. We were in control and looked like the better team most of the game. I was there at the stadium. Georgia needed a hail Mary and got it when our coverage just stopped on the play. So yeah, we had one nice play at the end but that's not the entire story of that day
Tennessee played from behind almost all game. I was there as well. Pretty sure you are not thinking about the same game. They did not take the lead until mid 4 qtr

Tennessee as a state is growing. High school football will continue to improve with all the people moving here. UT needs to be prepared to capitalize on that as UGA does in their state. Will it ever reach the level of GA football? Maybe. It will take time though.

So I'm saying from a recruiting standpoint, the in-state advantage UGA has will blossom for UT in TN. Probably one of the few positives of all the transplants moving here.

Anything is possible but its gotta start in the trenches like it always has in the SEC.

Short term I don't see anything other than the occasional upset like we did with Bama last year.

GA and Bama are well oiled machines at this point.

we need 4 straight years of top 5 classes... then we should be able to play with them..

Georgia is just a more prestigious program with far better recruits growing up in their backyards. Tennessee will never have what they do or the same extended success.

Welcome to why college football blows. Half a dozen schools can compete every single year, everyone else just tries to stay relevant and have their 2019 LSU season.
LSU is one of those 1/2 dozen and should be. They just had a buffoon for a HC for far too long. They have no in-state competition for recruits and if they can keep Bama from poaching 2-3 per year they’ll be right there as one of the consistent ones.

I guess is depends on what one thinks “catching them” means. If it means recruiting on their level - which is what it will take to get to their level consistently - then I say no. I don’t see UT putting together a string of 3 classes ranked number one in recruiting . . . Ever. I don’t see UT entering the top 3 in recruiting . . . For the simple reason that it looks obvious that Bama / UGA / OSU / have the top 3 spots most years.

Can we have a great team occasionally and beat them? Yes. But it will take a lot more talent than we currently have . . . And probably a generational type talent at QB.
