For those of you in the know,

Is Dooley going after the best recruits and getting rejected? Or is he just settling for 3 star recruits becasue he thinks it's the best we can do? Or does he consider himself to be a better judge of talent than the recruiting "insiders"?

I do realize that every class on the best teams are always made up of alot of 3-star players and I am by no means saying that 3-star players don't make outstanding football players OR that any of our players don't deserve scholarships. I am only saying that it seems like as a whole our class is low on 4 star players.

Thanks for all knowledge.

I highly doubt we are rejecting 4* players.

Dooley knows are program is at an all time low. That means some of the "higher rated" players are going to look elsewhere and Dooley knows this so he is taking the best players that want to come here.

But yes, Dooley should consider himself a better judge of talent than the recruiting "insiders". If they where truly that good, they wouldn't be working for Rivals or Scout they would be on a coaching staff in the SEC.

This is a serious question?

I guess so. I've heard rumors that Dooley didn't go by stars and thought he was better than the experts.

Sorry if I appear to be a moron, but yeah, serious question.

I guess I know your answer though...

Out of the rivals top-250, we are sitting pretty with a ton of them.....Dooley's doing fine and just now getting a little momentum.

Pagan, Wright, Tiny, Arnett, Rome, Clear, Bigelow, Watkins, Huggins, Dawson are all guys in the 250 that we're in the thick of it with...I'm sure I've missed some too.

Gah! NO!!! :furious3:

I believe that this has been explained 726 trillion times! We are going after athletes who will qualify academically, come in early and fill in some gaps on the depth chart, and exhibit great character traits, which translates to high coachability. Forget about the stars!

we are going after the players we wont strike out on. its very simple build what you have around on campus then bring in the higher rated players after they see the product.

This.

I truly believe he is building a base of players first then going after some bigger stars once the foundation is established.

I expect to see a few more 4*'s before nsd.

The article about Couch (DT) seems to be pretty encouraging.

Thanks. If he starts to do better is he allowed to pull the rug out from under any of the currents before signing day--I would assume that an offer can be withdrawn untilthe player is signed...

I do remember some people saying that when CDD took Tino Thomas he passed over some 4* players to take him b/c he thought Thomas was better.

That's what I was going for. Sorry to fly off the handle like that. It troubles me when we have to present this argument over and over and over again. It's just common sense given our program's predicament.

Sorry for the stupidity, man. I just have never kept up with recruiting that closely. I realize that it is the lifeblood of the program, I just never have gotten into the ratings etc. I've always just waited to see what our class is ranked and who the standouts are supposed to be. I know that usually we have several 4 star players in each class and I was beginning to wonder if that was gonna happen this year.

I realize it's tough when you're 2-6. That being said, everyone says we're 2-6 because of a lack of talent, which I agree with. I just don't want the situation to perpetuate.

I'd bet money Dooley doesn't even know what the current commits star ratings are. Does that answer your question?

No worries. I understand. It's just that I've learned so much about myself as a fan in the past ten years, especially last year with the Lane Kiffin catastrophe, that it's not about where recruits rank on ESPN's list or Rivals or Scout, but it's about the coaches' evaluations and what they think. It perturbs me that there are some people on here who that think that just because a recruit is not the darling of the recruiting sites and rankings, then they are not worth anything (I'm not saying you're one of them). This is untrue. I also know that it is never a good thing when your team is 2-6 at this point in the season. But for us to get back to national prominence, we're just going to have to suffer for now untill we get the right kids for our system.

Baggett said they are evaluating each recruit based on the staff's opinions. They could not care less about anybody's stars. Recruiting services are for fans in the fina analysis. By the way, look where all those 5 stars have Fla and USC right now. A lot of the higher rated players have grade and social problems that bring more trouble than results.

GO VOLS!!

We've passed over some higher rated guys like Walls, and Countess for guys who we liked better like Thomas. Recruiting service ratings are generally not the most accurate indicator of whether or not a recruit will be successful. Look more at the commitable offers that a prospect has and even then it is hard to judge sometimes because schools may call a guy and gauge interest but never extend an offer officially if a guy is locked in.

Yeah, those are better explanations. Thanks guys. :hi:

I would think CDD would be a little better at picking out a kid with talent himself rather than spending his friday nights on the recruiting sites. Do I think they use them at all? Yes...I would imagine someone in the athletic office has the job of keeping tabs on who is being offered by who and which players may be under rated as they have not been attending camps as it is impossible for the staff to see every recruit. The only thing I see that makes me curious as to how the process works is when you have a 3-4 star player say from the left coast and all his schools of interest are Pac10 and the lone odd school listed is Tennesee...but you never hear anything about him. I would think that would be a good indication of a player we should be talking to as there has to be some reason for the interest.
