Are we rejecting 4 star players or are they rejecting us?

CDD said the most important part of recruiting is getting high star players So the recruiting ranking is high for publicity purposes and to show he can recruit. He does his player evaluations almost exclusively on the Rivals website, per source.

I don't mind all the 3* athletes he's getting cause I did my "research" on this because I was wondering the same thing why only 3* guys would verbally commit. Don't really know how to word this right but 3* and 4* recruits make up the majority of All-Americans and 4* athletes had only 1 more all-american than the 3* did and it was recent too! I also like what he's doing. Not going after A LOT of 5* guys like kiffin would and waste all your time on them and then get a Bryce Brown, he's evaluating players on how good they are, how they fit the programs style of play, how they are grade wise and their attitude so we don't get any more Nu'Keese Richardson's, Mike Edwards, etc. etc. getting into legal troubles as freshman. Coach Dooley is a GREAT recruiter and these guys will do VERY good for Tennessee!

I realize it's tough when you're 2-6. That being said, everyone says we're 2-6 because of a lack of talent, which I agree with. I just don't want the situation to perpetuate.

I don't completely buy the "program is down" so we can't recruit angle. That part IMO is about salesmanship. If you are 8-0 right now, you sell being part of a winner. If you are in between, you sell "we're almost there and just need you". If you are down, you sell "start right away and be part of taking us back to the top".

I have been arguing for awhile that there is talent out there that the recruiting services and other programs miss. Enough talent to win championships. IMO, Dooley thinks he has a formula for finding talent without help or affirmation from Rivals. I hope so because his tenure at UT depends on it.

There are alot of problems with being hung up on "stars". For one, they arbitrarily limit the number of 4-5* rankings they give. There's a range but the total won't fall far from avg in any given year.

The biggest reason that they miss guys though IMO is marketing. Some kids or their handlers do a better job than others. If a guy goes to the right camps and combines, he gets noticed. If he produces and distributes and impressive highlight video, he gets noticed. If coaches/handlers promote him, he gets noticed. If he plays in a strong league, he gets noticed.

A lack of marketing, playing for a bad team, injuries, etc can cause a kid not to get noticed or loved by the recruiting services.

Crump and Hughes are two examples IIRC. Neither were marketed very well but both look to have legit talent.

I guess so. I've heard rumors that Dooley didn't go by stars and thought he was better than the experts.

Sorry if I appear to be a moron, but yeah, serious question.

I guess I know your answer though...

I'm pretty sure college coaches are the experts, and it is highly doubtful they look to rivals and scout to tell them what players to recruit.

no offense, but you are not very good at "research"...

ill let you figure this out on your own, but your conclusion/finding is quite flawed.

For those of you in the know,

Is Dooley going after the best recruits and getting rejected? Or is he just settling for 3 star recruits becasue he thinks it's the best we can do? Or does he consider himself to be a better judge of talent than the recruiting "insiders"?

I do realize that every class on the best teams are always made up of alot of 3-star players and I am by no means saying that 3-star players don't make outstanding football players OR that any of our players don't deserve scholarships. I am only saying that it seems like as a whole our class is low on 4 star players.

Thanks for all knowledge.

ohboy, another star grazer.just what makes you think all of these so calll experts that think they know, when in reallety, they probley need some one to lead them to the bathroom.
they get there info from HSHC.now of course that HSHC is gonna say that his kid is the best that he has every coached.
i will take CDD and staff's word on how good some of these plsyers are.thats all i or you need to know.:machgun:

I am sure the "experts" know a lot more than us mere mortals. They get to assign stars.

We really needed another stars thread!

+1. I wish the star gazers would just sit back and chill until NSD. Then let the bashing begin if u feel like dooley and staff should of done a better job. We need to remember that other staffs have had at least a year or two head start on relationships with recruits. With that said, I still think we will close with a top 15 class. NSD can't come quick enough!

Sometimes folks on this board get carried away. No one on here is a COACH or has coached at this level. Guys are always talking about what we need lol. What we need is to get the players that WANT to come play for UT, cause the ones that DON'T will leave..* are just that doesn't mean the kid isn't a player or that he will be any good when he gets around other talent. Look at all the players in the NFL that came from non D-1 schools or lower D-1 schools. This is why we play the game. We will be fine in TIME!!!!!!:salute:

Nice, good post. It's going to be two years before we can judge the success of this class, same as you can't judge a NFL team's draft until after you see who pan's out. But the day of the draft THOSE experts already have grades placed for those teams. Remember how Ryan Leaf was considered better than Peyton Manning. Who ever heard of Cortland Finnegan when he was picked up in the 7th round. Same here. We need to be patient and judge the product on the field starting next year.

I believe we'll see a huge difference next year, but remember we'll still be VERY young. That's why someone invented the term rebuilding. The base is most important.

My take. Next...

Of course he doesn't go by stars. He goes by tape, camps, workouts, etc. Just like everyone else.

Really, no one "goes by stars". Firstly, you think Saban checks out Rivals, or starts recruiting someone b/c they are the 15th ranked JUCO prospect on Scout? NO. Secondly, when teams start recruiting players when they're Soph & Jrs in HS, they don't even have "stars" yet...they're not yet rated on Rivals/Scout. The reason that Bama, etc consistently have top recruiting classes is because they evaluate talent that fits their program & go after it. Then, those people they recruit, by product of the fact that they are evaluated well by staffs & actually are talented, lo & behold...get higher star ratings!
