I realize it's tough when you're 2-6. That being said, everyone says we're 2-6 because of a lack of talent, which I agree with. I just don't want the situation to perpetuate.
I don't completely buy the "program is down" so we can't recruit angle. That part IMO is about salesmanship. If you are 8-0 right now, you sell being part of a winner. If you are in between, you sell "we're almost there and just need you". If you are down, you sell "start right away and be part of taking us back to the top".
I have been arguing for awhile that there is talent out there that the recruiting services and other programs miss. Enough talent to win championships. IMO, Dooley thinks he has a formula for finding talent without help or affirmation from Rivals. I hope so because his tenure at UT depends on it.
There are alot of problems with being hung up on "stars". For one, they arbitrarily limit the number of 4-5* rankings they give. There's a range but the total won't fall far from avg in any given year.
The biggest reason that they miss guys though IMO is marketing. Some kids or their handlers do a better job than others. If a guy goes to the right camps and combines, he gets noticed. If he produces and distributes and impressive highlight video, he gets noticed. If coaches/handlers promote him, he gets noticed. If he plays in a strong league, he gets noticed.
A lack of marketing, playing for a bad team, injuries, etc can cause a kid not to get noticed or loved by the recruiting services.
Crump and Hughes are two examples IIRC. Neither were marketed very well but both look to have legit talent.
