Are we rejecting 4 star players or are they rejecting us?

Sometimes folks on this board get carried away. No one on here is a COACH or has coached at this level. Guys are always talking about what we need lol. What we need is to get the players that WANT to come play for UT, cause the ones that DON'T will leave..* are just that doesn't mean the kid isn't a player or that he will be any good when he gets around other talent. Look at all the players in the NFL that came from non D-1 schools or lower D-1 schools. This is why we play the game. We will be fine in TIME!!!!!!:salute:

+1. I wish the star gazers would just sit back and chill until NSD. Then let the bashing begin if u feel like dooley and staff should of done a better job. We need to remember that other staffs have had at least a year or two head start on relationships with recruits. With that said, I still think we will close with a top 15 class. NSD can't come quick enough!

You cant rate this class or any class for that matter til a few years from now. Worrying about final class rankings is no different than star gazing. Who's to say a top 15 class is indeed a top 15 class ,when they haven't even played yet? They could end up being a #5 class on the field or a #60 class on the field. We wont know until a few more years

Haven't read entire thread, but Dooley passed on Countess, Walls, and Thurman and took 2 three star players in Kerbyson and Tino Thomas.

We are in great shape to end with 10-12 4 star players.

Wasn't Cobb at UK just a 2 star? What does that say?

Absolutely nothing - other than a typical example of the illogicality pervasive on this board.

An exception does not disprove a "general" rule. In general, 5* players have a greater predicted chance of success than 2* players.

All intangibles (injuries, schedule, coaching, et al.) being relatively equal, a roster with a high number of 4- and 5* players stands a better chance of success than a roster filled with 2* guys.

Boise State and Utah are exceptions, as their coaches are proven commodities. Dooley is not proven.

For those of you in the know,

Is Dooley going after the best recruits and getting rejected? Or is he just settling for 3 star recruits becasue he thinks it's the best we can do? Or does he consider himself to be a better judge of talent than the recruiting "insiders"?

I do realize that every class on the best teams are always made up of alot of 3-star players and I am by no means saying that 3-star players don't make outstanding football players OR that any of our players don't deserve scholarships. I am only saying that it seems like as a whole our class is low on 4 star players.

Thanks for all knowledge.

I dunno if this has already been posted, but we have turned away from at least 3 4stars: Trip Thurman, Avery Walls, and Blake Countess. We have stopped on Andrew Buie too.

Why? Does Dooley really have lower-regarded players that fit his style and system better?

Doesn't really matter either way to me but it seems like people go with whatever is in front of them. Last year everybody was counting stars when CLK was talking to every 5* in the country and loving every minute of it. Now stars don't matter because we are lining up 3* players.....Personally I want smart players that want to be here. Then take the best 25 that fit our needs.

My uneducated guess is it's not an ability or 'doesn't fit the system' thing. More likely a character issues, grades, something we don't know about and maybe never will. Dooley can't afford to take many chances this cycle. He needs to get everybody in. He has to fill the roster and can't afford 'no shows'.

Maybe because he knows what type of players he wants in his system and likes them better while you look at Rivals?

Your comment doesn't make much sense. Dooley likes players at the same time I am on the Rivals website?

I was asking LV a legitimate question regarding some players and you respond with a ham-fisted, semi-rhetorical quasi-insult. But the question still stands.

I guess you are trying to insinuate that I care about Rivals ratings more than I care about Dooley's assessment of talent. I don't, to a certain extent. But I'll play along.

Two things:

1. Are you saying you don't refer to the recruiting services - at all? If you do, then you are a hypocrite. Do you mistrust their rankings across the board? I'll bet if we had 7 5* guys committed, you wouldn't be so quick to poo-poo them.

2. And I guess you trust Dooley's assessment of players to fit his system better than the opinions of dozens of people whose jobs are to solely watch and rate high school football players? And furthermore, what exactly would you say is Dooley's system? Do you know what his "system" even is? Because if you think you do, chances are you are wrong. He is 19-26 as a head coach, so whatever system he has - I'd say - is pretty malleable at this point. Were a large number of highly-rated and talented prospects to come UT's way, he would find a way to utilize them, not turn them down to fit his "system".

1. Yes, I am saying that.
2. His system has traditionally been the 2 TE set, but we are seeing him go more on Chaney's offensive system.
3. You did ask a question but said they are lowly regarded. By whom? Dooley or Rivals?
4. If the Rivals recruiters are so great, why are they not scouts in the NFL or college coaches?

This should be an obvious yes.

Who should I trust? A staff of football coaches who have been around football their whole life and played the game or 4 journalists who just happened to get a job writing about recruits? Hmm....

Also, are you not excited about Kerbyson, Posey, Randolph, and Worley? But they each only have 3 stars.

Come on LV, you know Mike Farrell is by far a better judge of talent than Dooley, Baggett, Smith, Wilcox, Thompson, etc... :)
