Are you excited about the Olympics?

Oh man, one of my earliest coming of age memories is when my mom would drop me off at the public library when she went shopping, and I remember that picture of Dorothy Hamill on the medal stand in Sports Illustrated in '76. For weeks I would go back and find that same magazine, and I would tuck it inside of another so nobody would know I was staring at that one picture for like an hour. I don't think I felt that strongly about another woman until Olivia Newton-John in the Grease/Xanadu era.

Haha, my friends made fun of me for watching the "girly" stuff women's figure skating is right behind gymnastics for me.

Fair enough.

Soccer is another event I might try to watch if the US is competitive. Anyone know if either the men or women's team is expected to be any good?

For some reason nobody puts out their best teams for Men's soccer. Winning gold doesn't mean a ton...i think iraq won once.

Gymnastics + figure skating = double shot of thunder thighs. I'm right there with you.

Except now I retract and deny that statement because all the competitors these days are barely in their teens. I miss my Dorothy.

And I miss Dominique Dawes!

I will watch some because I work nights. I think I'd enjoy them more if half of the events weren't equestrian or swimming. Honestly I'd like to see more ping pong

I am anxious to watch some, even though it's a disappointing year with all that's going on there.

What events are you looking forward to?

I always enjoy the sprints. And the Phelps storyline should be interesting. I'll probably watch both golf and basketball.

What else?
I am only interested on the days the rest of the tv schedule is crap. Usually I would be super interested. I have no clue how Rio was awarded the games. Did they not send representatives there to check out that crap hole?

The opening is usually a great show.

They are spending 1/10th of what last games did. This is a money grab for what is looking like a 3rd world country. They literally dump their poo and piss into the ocean where Olympians will be competing. Not to mention the dead body parts.

The Olympics were cool when they were the only thing on TV. It's not as fun when less people are watching and into it. Greeny told a story about how his entire 6th grade locker room broke out in chants of "USA" just cause they felt compelled to the morning after USA hockey won gold over USSR...probably 1% of 6th graders watched USA play Canada for gold (in 2010?).

Fun fact, that game didn't win the US the gold. They still had to beat Finland, which they obviously did, but it's a popular misconception that they won the gold with the win over the soviets

The Wolrd Cup is about the only time I'll watch soccer.

I'd imagine the women's team is a favorite. I doubt the men's team will do anything. They never do, and always seemed over hyped (WC included).

We always seem overhyped?? I disagree on that. Maybe some of our media is trying to spark more interest, but it's not like we are predicted to win the World Cup or even get to the semi finals.

If we get out of the group, that's "good" for us. and if we go farther, then great. But we weren't even expected to leave the group last time with Germany, Portugal, and Ghana

From the stories I've read I really feel bad for the first timers having to compete in an awful location

You'll have a hard time finding the US men since they didn't qualify :) Women will be favorites though

Because they age limit the Olympics. It's basically the U-23 with a couple of exceptions allowed

Dominique Dawes from the 96 games😍

'96 was the first Olympics I remember watching. 10 year old me was convinced I was going to marry Dominique Moceanu.

I'll probably watch bits and pieces everyday. I've always enjoyed both the summer and winter games.

Not sure what it's called, but I always liked the skiing/shooting event.

Bi-athelon?

Biathlon- yeah, that's it. Love that. I was high on 'expert rifleman' scores in the army. Loved to hit the 300 meter consistently. May could have done sniper MOS but for my glasses. So knowing a very little of what concentration it takes to calm your mind and body without even having done a gigazillion km crosscountry ski to the station ...I am amazed at their ability to achieve any real accuracy. But wow! ... yes they do.

I generally enjoy the summer Olympics. The sprinting, swimming, gymnastics, and women's volleyball are always fun.

Nice that it's in our timezone this year.
