Argue the merits of Bruce Pearl (merged)

Maybe Pearl's peers have their egos and pride in their way in judging Pearl. BP has had a top tier SOS, RPI, SEC win total, and Season win total in his tenure at UT. He took a program which was on life support and has competed every year for SEC championship. He did this with players that other teams did not want (Lofton), walk on's (Smith), and wasted scholarships (Bradshaw). Many of his peers have never forgiven his doing the right thing. Anyone who could come to UT in the State the program was in and win one hundred (almost) times in the four years against the SOS he faced is a d**ned good coach, and I don't care how much whiskey his peers spit out their nose. You don't have be a peer to know what you eyes and records tell you.
I agree 100%. Pearl has changed basketball around Tn that's for sure. I think he's awesome.:eek:k:

:lolabove: Right on, brother!!

Just so we're clear, aside from the reg season title, Pearl has made two sweet 16 appearances with two teams who should have at least gotten to the sweet 16 OR BETTER. Aside from that, people don't care.

I still don't understand why people don't like pearl he has done nothing but win, and i also don't understand the argument he should have gotten to the sweet sixteen or better with two teams. with so much parity in mens basketball it is quite an achievement to reach the sweet 16 twice in 3 years.

13 is sort of irrelevant.

Kind of.........except when you have a guy like Fulmer, who all the press knows can't coach, and turns your school into an annually dirrespected bunch of yahoo's........

It's good for recruiting and national interest when the commentators speak highly of your coach......or the opposite can be true as welll.......

When when u'r dealing with Captain Negativo, what would u expect?? Pearl is the MAN

No it isn't.

Is there a trophy for SOS or RPI titles? Maybe for temp #1 rankings? All the other minutiae is garbage unless there is something to show foe it. I am happy that we won the SeC title last year. Beyond that, what have we done that LSU didn't accomplish just this season with a new coach?

Yes it absolutely is. I find it amazing that some on this board like yourself think that it shows some sign of great basketball intelligence to act like Bruce Pearl is an inferior coach. Give the man the credit he is due, and quit making yourself look like an idiot by pretending that the job he has done at Tennessee is anything short of stellar.

You may not care , but this "people" does. I have lived though the UT basketball draught when it hurt to watch UT play basketball because it was so ugly. I remember when we just hoped we played well enough to get to the NIT, the NCAA being a pipe dream. I remember when we were a two seed in the NCAA (although I will grant you we were misseeded) his fist year here taking the same players who had not even sniffed the NCAA the year before. I remember being seeded 4th and 3rd in the next two seasons, and making it to the sweet sixteen. I remember playing the number one team in the country and beating them on their home court. I remember losing three starters, looking like a young team that could not find its way, and then making the SEC Championship game after winning the east title. Yea, this person cares and I bet there are many others who do too.

papa vol just wandering who would you bring in as coach?

I would keep Pearl today, but I want to see him change his approach to his players and be demanding. I'd also like to see some semblance of an offensive game plan.

It makes no sense to talk about moving him along today, but it makes the same sense to pretend he's on the level of the top tier guys out there.

I like Pearl and think he has been good for our program. I am under no delusions, however, that he is the guy to take us to the next level. I hope he is because he's so popular, but I don't think it likely.

How does it make me anything? I have damn good reasons for my opinions and have stated them ad nauseum. Until you can refute them with something sensible or stronger than a bunch of regular season comparisons to our history, you simply look stupid in pretending that I do.

I suspect I remember the futility as well as you do, but deifying our current rise to middlin' ball, is exactly the way to ensure that we make this new ceiling another long term one.

What is the next level? compete for national championships every year? I mean come on there are only 2 - 3 programs who compete for national championships year in and year out. He has been here for 4 years and done a hell of a job so far. This team is finally hitting their stride at the right time and who knows they could make a run. But for now let BP run the program the his way. Its worked pretty well so far.

The next level is competing for Final Four appearances. We aren't close today. This current crew underachieved this season and we have looked uncoached very regularly throughout CBPs tenure. That crap works in a weak SEC, but not in a one and done tourney scenario full of good coaches and good defenses.

Why does it bother you that I don't share your rosy view? It doesn't change those woderful results you're so proud of. I have a point of view and I'm expecting a final 4 style program with the money we are now spending and the facilities we bring to the chase.

I really don't call competing for the SEC championship every year that BP has been here as "Middlin", and calling it that defies logic. How do you know what level he can take us too? I respect a lot of your opinions, but you really have lost me here. I don't know why you have such a hard on for BP but appears when it comes to Bruce, the blood has left your brain.

I have a question for you BPV. If someone had told you prior to BP's arrival that he would win the east 3 of 4 yrs, win a regular season SEC title, possibly win a SEC tourney title, make 2 straight sweet 16s and being unbelievably close to an elite 8, would you have considered that a success? What about recruiting as well as anyone in the conference? What else would you have expected in 4 years? Yes, it does seem a tad bit moronic to have expected more than what has been produced to this date. People that are happy with the results to date are also not victims of some inferiority complex towards the basketball program; they just have watched Tennessee basketball prior to Bruce's arrival.
