Argue the merits of Bruce Pearl (merged)

Eh, he's a good coach. He turned the UT program around pretty immediately, and he did win a conference championship last year. The problem is that people aren't satisfied with calling him that; they think that if you don't think he's up there with Knight and Krzyzewski, then you're not a "real fan." He's pretty clearly not a coach that is ever going to take any program deep in the tournament on a regular basis.

I quit with the sports hero-worship at about the same time I discovered girls. A lot of Vol fans apparently never figured that out.
I may not agree with a lot of things you post but that is exactly how I feel. :good!:

Like a moth to a flame...mention Pearl's name in a thread title and hatvol comes running.

I've never, ever said that Pearl was one of the best coaches in the nation. However, were people really expecting one of the best coaches in the nation to come running to UT on a $1mil. or less salary when football runs the show? (We were paying 3 coaches) I think the school did alright all things considered. I know Pearl makes more than that now, but the fact is, he put butts in the seats. You will get paid if you do that.

Hat would have hired Huggins, but I just don't see that as a good idea seeing that his hiring would have come right on the heels of the DUI/Cincy ordeal. Also, would UT have been a strong enough pull to keep him away from his alma mater?

Awww, and I normally think I'm so reasonable....!

God help these "Pearl is an elite coach" types if we lose tonight. Losing to a thoroughly mediocre team like Alabama twice in a week would be inexcusable.

Pearl is not a bad coach. He's a solid coach with great marketing tools and a personality that attracts kids to play for him. Those kids may or may not be lazy, though.

Variety is the spice of life. I enjoy your points of view and banter. Cheers

I don't think that most people really expect UT to have an elite coach at this point, or hold it against Pearl that he isn't one. But many of us are sick of this attitude that criticizing Pearl is akin to taking a dump on a picture of Nelson Mandela. (And an attitude which is, apparently, shared by Mr. Pearl himself.)

Go onto another board , dont troll but simply ask opposing fans of their opinion on Coach Bruce Pearl...Now dont go to an SEC school's board they want be straight...but go to a Big East's schools board...see what they think....Im willin to be they have nothin but good to say bout BP

Pearl is a good but certainly not great coach that can recruit well though he lacks skill in player evaluation but is about as good of a marketer as they get.

Bruce Pearl understands what UT basketball is. I sit and watch every single UT basketball game. Sometimes from section 120 or from my lazyboy. The man has more passion than any coach in basketball. He's always always coaching. He does not sit down. He has one of the youngest teams in basketball and he is still going to make the NCAA tourney. I guess what pisses me off so bad is the fact that people get on here and talk about how bad of a coach he is because of this years record. We're young. We're immature. This team is just now hitting its stride minus the bama game last sunday. I guess I'm just a firm believer in bruce pearl. I've met him and I can honestly say he has great passsion for the university and is a great coach. He is always selling the program to students around UT. He is always out selling his basketball team to fans. He's always on the strip and he always takes the time to talk to his fans and students.

Wrong.

Some interesting comments. CBP is a very good X's and O's coach. He observes, dissects, and digests other teams very well so that he all ways has good game plans. You can see his talent at scouting when our opponent tries to inbound the ball. There is a reason we create so many turnovers during those situations.
So far Coach Pearl has proven to be a very good recruiter. Chism’s class was in the top 10 in the country as was last year’s class. The '10 class all ready has 2 of the top thirty players in the country. When you consider that we have been mostly abysmal for the last 30 years the fact that he has attracted several elite recruits is impressive.
I would beg anyone to show me another coach with his marketing or sales skills. Having the third highest attendance in the country at a school with our basketball history speaks for itself.
Coach Pearl's philosophy of pressing, up-tempo chaotic basketball is where I tend to question him to a degree. When done correctly his style is incredibly entertaining to watch, it produces tons of wins, and even championships. The problem is in the NCAA tournament. It seems when we play methodical teams that value each possession; well-coached teams, whether their talent level is less than ours or not we have trouble. When we can not dictate the tempo against teams we are susceptible. Arkansas was able to win championships with the same approach so it is possible, but you need a ton of horses and we simply are not their yet.
The only other issue I have is the amount of rope he gives the players. I can not tell you how irritating it is to watch Chism shoot a three 3 seconds into the clock when nobody is close to the boards. I tend to be more of a purist in that regard and I do realize the logic, but it drives me crazy.
With all that being said nothing bothers me more that to read a post or hear a comment about getting rid of CBP. Right now he is a perfect fit. We have been in a basketball abyss going on thirty years and in the last 4 years we have advanced in the tournament, won a conference championship and recruited All-Americans - we have become relevant again. So anyone calling for his job in this or any other forum is a total idiot that knows not of what they speak.

I don't think sitting lazily in the half court with little to no motion and jacking up threes as the shot clock reaches zero qualifies as good Xs and Os. He's good at some areas - but I believe the best measure of how good of an Xs and Os a person is comes from their teams performance in both half court offense and defense.

Try not to get off topic, we are talking about Bruce Pearl here.

Pearl was the best thing that could have happened to the death zone known as Tenn. basketball.Whether or not he will ever be able take us past sweet 16 status is debatable, but at least we have been getting there. Were not Duke and N.Car.,were not getting our pick of All-Americans every year.I have been pretty impressed with what he has done so far.No curtains in the arena, sec east championships and NCAA berths. We would all have took that four years ago.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled with what CBP has done for the university. However, all of these people claiming that he is the best coach in the nation are out of line.

Every time I see one of these Deification of Pearl Threads, I find myself extremely thankful that Jerry Green never understood the power of being a body paint wearing, fake tanned asskisser.

Jerry Green in body paint? I find myself thankful I did not see that either.
