Armando Gallaraga robbed of Perfect game

Bud Selig has many shortcomings, but this was the right move.

I have been back and forth on what he should do, but when it comes down to it the fans are going to hate this.

I do get tired of this "human element" bs.

Yea but if he does this then it opens a whole can of worms and setting precedents on the rule book.

I've personally always been a proponent of the human element in baseball but can understand the other side's argument.

Just saw it this morning. I'm sure it's all been said, but you just don't make that call, even if it's close.

I disagree. IMO if Joyce thinks he is out, then he has to make that call no matter what the situation is in the game, historic or not.

9th inning, 2 outs, against a team with no chance at the playoffs down by three runs with one of the rarest sports accomplisments on the line. If you think it's close, you give the benefit to the pitcher. Thing is, it wasn't even close. We have to keep the game pure thoguh.

Either way everybody knows it wad a perfect game in reality. The play wasn't even that close.

You could tell the runner was even shocked.

Not disagreeing that he should have called him out, just that if he thought the runner was safe on the field, then he has to make that call.

I think Gallaraga would rather have the perfect game instead of popularity. Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Yeh, that's kinda like saying, "We won the NIT!!!" Ill take the perfecto over everyone on earth knowing my name.

Yeh, ppl with similar situations will call about 20 minutes after the announcement. Boston in 99, so on so forth. Unless they change the rule with the changed call this offseason, then it might be easier. Still, your gonna leave someone hanging either way.

I mentioned above that it looks like his arms twiched a bit prior to the motion. Makes me think he was trying to get it right and avoid making the "obvious" call. He was trying to not just go with what's expected. Make sense? Everyone expected "out" and he was trying too hard not to give in to the moment. I'm having trouble putting this point into words. So if confusing, sorry.

I agree. Apparently, the "human element" is diminished in other major sports. I just want to see the right calls made. If that means instituting replay for everything except balls and strikes, so be it.

You're exactly right. Replay should be brought to baseball. The problem is the game's already run so long. Personally, I think Selig is old hat and they need to bring in a young gun who will:

a) Stop letting Derek Jeter tighten up every piece of equipment on his body when he comes up to bat

b) Institute replay

c) Other stuff to speed up the game :p

Why not just give coaches a certain number of "challenges" during a game? Plays in baseball are pretty much cut and dry. One look at replay, and you can make the correct call. Plus, not every game will have a play that requires a replay.

Bud Selig sucks, but I agree that the play should stand as called.

Why? What is so sacrosanct about the call on the field when there's overwhelming video evidence that it was wrong? It's not like the other team came back and won, or that there was any possible effect on the outcome of the game. It was the last play of the game. The game ended immediately afterwards anyway. Everybody's fine with replay in football; what is so holy about the on-the-field call in baseball?

Please, one of you guys explain to me exactly why a call that was A) obviously wrong, B) of historical importance, and yet C) clearly unimportant in a who-won-the-game way ought not to be overturned by a putative commissioner who has the power to make things right. Please include as part of your argument a justification why replay is a natural and good part of football, and yet overturning a call on the field in baseball is a travesty.

You answered your own question. It's C. It didn't affect the outcome of the game.
