Arnett Officially to Michigan State

Wow, it's football and a kid who's still a teenager, you classless fool.

yeah, I dont want to aim this comment at any specific poster, but there are people who have just put things completely out of perspective here.

It's too bad. I know this fan base, and this board, are full of classy people who truly care about others, but there is that small percentage of people that have to ruin it for the rest.

It should be pointed out that there is a fella named Alex Bullard that transferred from ND to UT because of family issues, and was granted a waiver to be eligible immediately. He then started 12/12 games.

Oh, and his family is in Franklin, so why didnt he go to Vandy instead of UT??

Bullard's father wasn't sick before he made his choice. He also was very much a part of his life and not used as a transfer tool. Arnett's father also hasn't died. Bullard didn't run to the media to get his way. He was willing to sit out if need be. Bullard went to Tennessee and took the risk. He never complained about it. Bullard never exploited his family , or put out pictures of his dad when he left Notre Dame. You see , unlike Arnett , he actually gave a damn. He wasn't using him. And if he was told to sit , he would NEVER RUN TO YAHOO AND TRASH THE PROGRAM. You act like he didn't get what he asked for , when he did. The difference is Alex handled this situation like a man. You defending Arnett in every post is getting old. You like where he is from. Great. Too bad you can't see through the bull**** circus that surrounds MeAnthony.

First: I have said many times that I dont like the way it went down. It was handled poorly on both ends.

Second: It is complicated by the fact that his position coach left just before Arnett announced his intentions to leave. Makes it look a little shady.

Third, yes Alex did handle it differently, that is great. He handled it the way he should. But are you saying that the kids dad should have to die for him to be able to transfer? "Sorry kid, you signed your life over to the vols, screw your dad, screw your chance at trying to have a relationship with him, screw you."

Fourth: Quit taking it so freaking personal. The kid screwed up. He made bad decisions. He said things he shouldnt have. Never once did the kid say, or imply "Im leaving UT because I dont like the program, or its fans". NOT ONCE. EVER. Quit taking it so personal.

The things that have been said about this kid on this forum are disgusting. Some of you should be ashamed.

All I have posted in this thread are facts. I have not bashed either side, and I will not. The University and the football program have their policy. They were trying to live by it. I dont agree with how they handled it, but I still think that dDooley was trying to do his job, and was trying to do what was in line with university policy.

I also dont agree with how dArnett handled it. I have stated that many times. But I dont think that those mistakes should cost the kid a relationship with his father. So his relationship sucked before he came to UT. That doesnt mean it has to stay that way. The kid should get a chance to mend that if he wants. And if he had to do that at CMU or Alma College, or Saginaw Valley State, I would have been fine with that. I will take him at MSU, but I wish he would have gone somewhere else, just to avoid that misconception. I dont give a flying rip through a rolling donut where the kid landed after he transferred. I care that he gets a chance to repair a crappy relationship with his dad. Dying or not.

I agree, he handled it poorly. You could also be right that he simply used that as an excuse. There is no way to know that for sure, but it's very possible.

But there are many reasons that went into this I'm sure. Maybe being way from his father was harder than he thought. Let's be honest here, the recruiting process is like used car sales. The guy recruiting you will tell you anything to get you to come. I'm sure Coach Baggett was telling him "it won't be so bad", "you can call him anytime you want", etc. Then, being 17 or 18, he bought it. Then he arrives and bam, he realizes he's made a mistake. Hypothetical situation, for sure, but it seems as likley as anything else. I was just surprised at some of the reactions in this thread of what a awful person he now is. Typical Vol fan overreaction I guess (See the 5K+ post Dalton Santos meltdown thread in the recruiting section).

I just hate this system that demands a 17/18 year old make up their mind for 4 to 5 years and let's coaches go anytime they like. And I wouldn't have a problem with that if the scholly was guaranteed for 4 years.

Are you really that jaded? What was broadcast when he came was that his dad was extremely ill and he told the coaches that he did not have a relationship with his dad and hadn't had one in years.

I am glad that he is where he can play ball, I really don't care about the sit out a year thing. I think that was stupid to begin with. If the NCAA wants to penalize a kid then take a year off the end of their eligibilty and don't make them sit for a year. However, like Bassman, I think he AND HIS FAMILY played The UT to get an immediate release to where HE wanted to go, not to where the AD policy would let him go. He knew the rules coming in and then once here, decided he didn't like the rules. So CCB left, what would his decision have been if for some reason his "favorite" coach had passed away (God forbid).

18 year olds make decisions to go die for this country everyday and they are the most awesome kids on the face of the earth. Don't get on VN and cry for this kid because he was 18. That in and of itself is a crock of hooey. When you AND YOUR FAMILY know the rules coming in and feel the need to break them once you are in that position, there is only one thing to do. ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES. I have nothing against Deanthony. I wish he had stayed and played for us because I think he would have been in the top 3 or 4 WR's this year. He is going to be special at MSU. I don't like the way that the system of rules gets thrown under the bus when "a kid changes his mind". All that teaches anyone is that if you whine loud enough you can get your way. This whole deal isn't about Deanthony, it is about a young man (ANY YOUNG MAN) that made a commitment, changed his mind, and then recanted statements made to secure that decision after he got here. Then on top of it, instead of living with the consequences, used the media to secure his release to where he wanted to go and then got MSU involved to get his immediate eligibitly secured.. That is a travesty. It is the same situation as the kid that knew the rules to play ball for BYU, broke them, and then used the media to get reinstated. This kind of attitude is rampant in this country and the problem is that is gets sympathy from kind ears. Rant over....sorry.

I was with you until the "and then MSU got involved" portion.

MSU has done NOTHING wrong here. Were they supposed to leave the kid flailing in the wind?

I dont understand what they were supposed to do. Also, please remember that not only did MSU get involved, but michigan also got involved, trying to block the transfer.

First off , you are taking it personally. You are showing how much you care.....personally. I don't care anymore. I'm only telling it like it is. You give more opinions than you ever give fact , so don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. I never said his father had to die. That's stupid. That is what happend to a kid you brought up. It's a totally different situation. You see , nothing was shady about the way Bullard left. What I'm saying is Arnett knew his father was ill before he made his decision. He knew the risk. Bullard didn't. Bullard was free to go and the university didn't hold him back , but told him he might have to sit. I'm sure Arnett is thinking of his dad everyday. :ermm: Seriously , I bet he hasn't seen him since he took that picture. He has all those shoes to sell you know. And the fact that you say he never bashed Tennessee or it's fans? How close were we to that happening? If he doesn't get his way , Arnett would have said everything he needed to so he could get his way. He did everything but that. He pushed Dooley in a corner and without saying so , suggested that was his intention. Alex was raised right. MeAnthony was raised by his brother , who in all accounts , is just as immature as he is.

My concern is only for a person that wants to have a relationship with his father.

I dont care about the football aspect of this. I dont care where he goes to college. I dont care if he ever catches another football the rest of his life.

Yes, he is immature. His brothers were his role models while he was growing up, his dad was not a part of that. The whole family is a freaking mess, and immature is probably an understatement.

And yes, I think you are right that if he didnt get his way, it would have gotten ugly. and I would have supported him ZERO percent with that. Football is a game. He needs to learn about life, and how to live as a responsible adult. He did not show any of that in this transfer process, but hopefully he will learn from it.

See , that's the problem here. That isn't what Arnett is/was looking to do. If you really believe that is what it all came down to , you are fooling yourself. If it was genuine I would totally agree. But it's not. What you posted above is taking it personally. And it seems like it's coming from the right place. It's really the way it should be , but it's not the way it is. I know you mean well , but there is no need to defend his actions anymore. Not here anyway. Let's see how he handles the next situation in his life. There seems to be a pattern here.

I think we are coming to more of a middle ground here :good!: I agree that it is a bit personal, but not in a football sense, and has nothing to do with schools involved. It has to do with the fact that I see kids every day, because I am a foster parent, that do not have relationships with their parents.

I have a friend that is very close with the Arnett family. They are a very close link to the situation. Im not saying I know everything, because I dont. And Im not saying I know more than you, just different things that you might not know. I think we would all agree that it is a screwed up family unit. The Arnett brothers are not angels, and they are not the devil.

I think we both agree that the kid needs to learn from this, grow up a lot, and figure out how to make the best out of his life. Any more mistakes like this and his life will come crashing down.

Yes, I am that jaded. Recruiting coordinators get paid to bring in the players. So, of course, just like any salesman, most will tell a kid whatever he wants to hear to get him to come here.

Second, I am not blaming Dooley. I am not blaming the Universtiy of Tennessee. I think Dooley did the right thing by making him come in and speak face to face before granting the transfer. He should have. DeAnthony should have went to Coach Dooley first and spoke with him. I think this would have saved him and Coach Dooley the blame game that persisted.

The point of my rant was how personal everyone took this and saying he lacked character or whatever other remarks they made. They do not know this kid. They do not know the situation. No one here does, and should not pretend they do. Yes, you can come back and say "I didn't take it personally", but if you rant about how the kid has no character, you took it personally.

I'm not crying for the kid, and if my bit about him being 18 is hooey, so is you pretending to know the whole situation of why he left. Also, the military comparison is laughable. The military can't come to you next year (if you have done everything right, not a dishonorable discharge) and say "Well, Johnny, we signed up some kids that are stronger and faster. You are no longer needed." That happens every year on college campuses. If the schools want military commitment, they should give that same commitment back in return.

I love the University of Tennessee and the Vols, but I despise the way many in this fanbase gets their collective panties in a wad if someone transfers, kid in recruiting decides not to come here, etc. It's really embarassing. Just let it go.....goosfraba....We are the University of Tennessee and we will come out on top.

My biggest fear is a MSU -v- UT Bowl Matchup. That would suck for me personally. (It would anyways, since my kid is at UT)

But yeah, Im sure yall would make my life miserable.

:)

Edit: make that FREAKING miserable.

Agreed. Like I said , what you posted seems to be coming from the right place. If only Arnett had someone in his life trying to get those points across. I know he delt with some stuff going on back home and it makes me wonder if going back there was the right decision. That video he made about how he grew up made you think anywhere was better than where he was. I had no problem with the transfer. Just where it was heading after he got a release to a school that wasn't good enough for him. I also thought the way he went about his announcement should have told us more about him , but we were just happy he chose us. The fact that his "father figure" was right there making the videos with him tells you a lot. I really wish him well , but you have to be honest about the situation. Go see the coach. Tell him what you need to do. And don't try to lie to him. You know Dooley knows what went down. Dooley may not look like a good coach at the moment , but he isn't dumb when it comes to matters like this. Sitting a year might have been the best thing for DeAnthony. Getting your way isn't always the best thing for you. It might have taught him to appreciate things more.

I figured it was a BS excuse from AA when he mentioned ND early in the process and when he demanded a release to MSU when there was a closer instate D1 school.

The coaches are allowed to move freely so the playesr should be allowed to as well without sitting out.

Just for the record, MSU is closer to his house than CMU by 15 minutes. (not saying that is much, just clarifying)

Im not trying to argue your point, just clarifying the locations. um and emu are both farther away by about 15min. also

Edit: They are on south side of Saginaw. If you google map it, Mt Pleasant is actually closer to the City of Saginaw, but from where his actual house is, MSU is closer.

Edit2: I wish he had chosen to go to D3 Saginaw Valley State. But he didnt.

Quite true, but not in this case....I don't think. However, this whole deal isn't about Deanthony Arnett, at least not with me.

I never blamed the kid personally, however, his willingness to throw The UT under the bus would lend credence to that accusation.

I'm not crying for the kid, and if my bit about him being 18 is hooey, so is you pretending to know the whole situation of why he left.

NEVER said I knew the whole situation with the kid. I do understand that he came here with full knowledge that his dad was VERY ill and that he told our coaches that he had no relationship with his dad and didn't care.

Also, the military comparison is laughable. The military can't come to you next year (if you have done everything right, not a dishonorable discharge) and say "Well, Johnny, we signed up some kids that are stronger and faster. You are no longer needed."

Is was used as a comparison about 18 year olds that make life changing decisions. Much the same as getting married at 18 and having a kid and deciding it was all a mistake. And yes, they can come to you at any time and discharge you. If the Military doesn't want you, they will discharge you, period. Your two or four year commitment with them is just as one sided as coming to a school to play sports.

That happens every year on college campuses. If the schools want military commitment, they should give that same commitment back in return.

Probably the biggest reason that I absolutely loathe J Callipari (sp?). I truly despise the 1 year scholly deal. However, I think if you get cut by the school, you are free to go without losing an additional year of eligibility. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The transfers don't bother me one bit. If they don't want to be a VFL, then go be something else. However, if they are willing to throw The UT under the bus with the media in order to get what THEY want, then that's when it gets personal. And, before you bark, just remember DArnett, NEVER even mentioned a transfer to a smaller school VERY close to home. He only WANTED to be allowed to transfer to a Big Ten school. There is too much evidence in his particular case of family tampering to believe that it is anything other than "I changed my mind and want to be a Big Ten guy". That is OK with me, but he should have lost a year.

OK, I see what you are saying. I did not know the military could do that. I thought you were there hook, line, and sinker for 4 years unless receiving you receiving a dishonorbale discharge. You learn something new every day. Plus I have to agree with anyone that recognized the douchieness (not that this is even a word, but the guy deserves his own word) of Callipari.

Why the need to be so vindictive? The guy only gets 4 years to play college football which oftentimes doubles as an audition for the NFL, so why should he be forced to give up 25% of that time because he wasn't happy at UT? Can you honestly blame him for wanting to leave after the season we had last year and the fact that his position coach left? Like I said earlier, life is too short, and I personally have no respect for coaches who try to hold kids hostage in transfer situations when they can leave at a moments notice if a better coaching position becomes available. FTR, Dooley is far from the only coach who is guilty of this.

If it isn't a word, it should be with his picture next to it.

Because if you start allowing kids to transfer without any downside then you will have utter chaos. It would make the coaching carousel look tame.

And CDD didn't hold him hostage - he just didn't give him permission to transfer to MSU or UM.

1) CDD didn't hold him hostage, nor was he going to. CDD when first approached quoted rules. After DA talked to him man to man, he approved the release and transfer with no limitations. Most or all of the "UT isn't going to let a kid go home to his sick dad" was media exageration.

2) College athletes get 5 years of eligibility to complete 4 years of play. He would have lost a year and had to complete his 4 in 4. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure that is how it is.

Either way, he made a decision and should have to pay the consequences. That is part of growing up. CDD wasn't taking away his year, that was the NCAA. All the AD had to do was release him from his commitment. He got that unconditionally. Once again, this isn't a swipe directly at the kid but how it was handled by him, his family, and the coaches at MSU.......i.e. Give me what I want or I will whine until I get it. This is becoming the norm for kids now. There are no consequences anymore for actions.

Yes, there has to be rules in place. But this whole situation was a train wreck from the very beginning. If Arnett had talked to Dooley first, . . . . sigh. If's, but's, .. . .

Yeah, you have to have a consequence for transferring. And sitting out a year is very fair.

I dont know why you had to ruin such a great post by bringing the coaches at MSU into it. They did NOTHING different than what any coaching staff at any university would do for a kid who is requesting a waiver. I 100% guarantee you that the kid that came from ND last year got the same exact support from the UT coaching staff and AD. 100%.

They were talkin with his brother before he was released.

In some cases, yes. But if he really just wanted to be closer to his sick dad, then why not just let him transfer to a decent team and play near home without penalty? Unlike some on here, who aren't above this type of behavior, I'm not going to be the guy who accuses a player of lying about wanting to be close to a sick parent regardless of what said relationship has been in the past. Even if it means going home to develop a relationship with a previously estranged parent who is now sick or dying, then good for Arnett.
