I fully support civil unions and am ambivalent about gay marriage.

That is considerably different than persecution.

I think it's a form of persecution. One is targeting a specific group based on orientation.

On a fundamental level, what is the difference between making fun of somebody for wanting to be a fudge packer and making fun of somebody because they are a chubby chaser?

Should chubby chasers get special laws written for them?

For it to be persecution you have to look at what is being done to said group.

What is marriage anyway? If it is simply legal rights then why aren't civil unions sufficient? Answer: Marriage has social meaning. That meaning is rooted in what marriage has represented to society. It is symbolism. That is changing and in short time marriage will mean any 2 people joining. For now, society has deemed it to be man and woman. In 50 years, maybe it will include 3 somes.

Is it persecution deny symbolism?

Honestly when I think of real persecution I think this is laughable and shows how whiny and weak we've gotten. Minorities were persecuted. Gays not being granted a symbolic state sanction of their union is not persecution.

I'm not talking about gay marriage right now, I'm talking about acceptance and tolerance. The people that have been murdered because they are gay or ridiculed so much that they took their own lives.

Definition of persecute:


to harass or punish in a manner designed to injure, grieve or afflict: to cause to suffer because of belief.

Persecute - Definition and More from the Free Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Now tell me, is this what virtually every state government and the POTUS is doing by not favoring gay marriage? Notice the intent in the definition.

Words have meaning. Using "persecute" to describe this situation undermines real persecution that gays and other minorities have suffered.
