Atlanta Braves II

Yeah, the Braves choked, but it's not like the Cards didn't go on a pretty insane run to catch them.

That's why I'm not that upset. If JJ and Hanson were healthy, this wouldn't be an issue.

Fredi Gonzalez needs to be fired however.

oh i'm not terribly devastated...once something starts going like this you pretty much see it coming (what's the analogy - like a slow moving crash? you know how badly it's going to end yet you can't turn away?)

Seriously though, I do like the team not being at the top of the list on any sort of bad record...just looks better

Also, this isn't the Mets of 07-08 were they were on their last legs.

You're not going to have a .170 BA from Uggla before the ASB. Heyward will get better. The rotation will be better. Lowe will be gone. The bullpen has another year of experience and with Kris Medlen, will be much better.

I like this team's chances of making the playoffs last year, especially if they can get a good LF.

It was pretty obvious which team deserved to play in the playoffs. Too bad that team wasn't the Braves. The Cardinals were playing like a playoff team and I do think they have a shot. Their 2006 team didn't appear to be a favorite either. This year's Cards should have never had the chance, but they made it thanks to a historic collapse, and honestly, I'll be rooting for them to destroy the Phillies.

Might as well get an early start.

Wren's list of things to do:

1) Get rid of Lowe.

2) Figure out your SS situation.

3) Find a LF.

4) Improve the bench.

5) Fire Fredi Gonzalez.

Agree.

But, the Cards deserve it. They went 16-5 in their last 21. I just can say 100% that with Hanson/JJ healthy, we win the WC.

I don't know about that. Check out the Braves' splits below. (I don't remember how to put the HTML in so that it lines up right, unfortunately.) They gave up 111 runs in September, which was their worst month of the year, but the big glaring issue there is the 84 runs scored. That's what happened. This collapse is on the offense.

The first thing that needs to happen is Liberty Media needs to sell the team to an individual willing to loosen the reins on the payroll.

I keep hearing and reading it's going to happen. I know it will never happen, but Mark Cuban as the owner makes me happy.

I'd bet you five dollars that Lowe will not be gone. It would be totally out of character for them to eat $15m like that. He'll get a shot at the job in the spring and have to pitch in a Mark Redman-like fashion in order to lose it.

I can't see them going after a LF either. Every year we speculate about what they'll do about LF, and every year they halfass it.

The one thing the Braves do have going for them is that the Phillies are old and getting older; the Braves have a good core of young talent. The future looks good. I've just got to keep telling myself that managers don't make that much of a difference.

Maybe Boston will eat a large chunk of Carl Crawford's contract to get him out of Boston, i.e. Edgar Renteria. Would be a great, albeit not happening scenario: Chipper decides to retire, shift Prado to 3B, trade for a discounted Crawford to play LF and bat second. Boston obviously needs pitching.

It is a minor coincidence that the season was ended by a guy the Braves were outbid for at the trade deadline. I feel like getting Bourn was the right move, but the Braves were literally a .500 team after the deadline. More could have been done and plenty should be done this winter.

I feel bad for Kimbrel. I know people are mad at him right now, but he was outstanding this year.

When he ran in from the pen, I was afraid that nerves might be an issue. That was a heck of a spot for a guy his age to be in.

Also hadn't pitched in five days. I think that might have played a part.

The Braves and the Red Sox both supplanted the 69 Cubs for the worst choke job in Major League Baseball history.

Gordon for LF. Pastornicky at SS. It's doubtful, but Aaron Hill would be a nice bat off the bench, but he probably wouldn't sign as a bench guy at this point in his career.
