Atlanta Braves II

Byrd would be useful Chipper insurance this year, and he's probably entering the phase of his career when you could reasonably expect him to come back next year to replace Bourn in CF. Because, you know, there's a guy in A ball that hasn't hit at all or even played outfield yet but they're thinking might be the CF of the future, and we wouldn't want to block him.

Verc you're on a roll lately!

I'm becoming more and more annoyed at the team's refusal to do anything other than make short-term moves. They've had two years to figure SS out, but now they're just going to throw two middling prospects up in the air and hope one of them sticks. There's no 3B in the pipeline to replace Chipper. There's no CF to replace Bourn, whom everyone knows is gone after this year. Terdoslavich hasn't swung at a pitch higher than the Carolina League, but they're already saving him a spot in LF in Atlanta. Meanwhile Wren is sitting on his stack of pitching prospects like Scrooge McDuck. The Braves have always been a conservative organization, but in recent years they've become positively moribund.

I'm not completely making that up. The Braves moved Matt Lipka, who hit like a girl at Rome last year, to CF this year. Immediately making him the best CF prospect in the organization.

Don't discount Myke Jones hitting like a girl while also playing CF.

Who is Myke Jones!!

In all seriousness this organization has a great surplus of pitching but a serious problem with hitting in the minors... and the show. Further evident when Myke Jones and Matt Lipka are at the front of the lines for a call up

That guy isn't even a prospect anymore. He's 25. If I ever read anything that indicates that the team is even sort of thinking about him in their future plans for CF in Atlanta, I'm gonna drive downtown and set myself on fire in front of the stadium.

All those guys have better track records.

Yunel is overrated b/c we saw Alex Gonzalez for 1.5 years.

Maybe to you.

Some of the names on that list don't even belong in the same breath. Also, track records are great, but Escobar is better than Jeter at SS right now, and it's not close.

I think people overrated him because of that .330 or whatever batting average he threw up his rookie year. They think of him as a .300 hitter, top of the lineup type guy, and he's just not. He's a .280 singles hitter who walks a little -- ie, a #7 hitter on any team that has any offensive talent whatsoever. He doesn't do anything special. If he's one of the top 10 shortstops in baseball -- which he might actually be -- then it's because the current crop of shortstops sucks, not because he's good.

He's turned out to be what I called him five years ago -- Rafael Ramirez with a slightly better bat and a terrible attitude. Still, there's no question the Braves could use him this year. It's too bad that he himself made that impossible.

If you don't think his arm is special you're crazy.

He is a career .289 BA with a career .366 OBP. I do not think that screams 7 hole hitter... I guess if he played on the Yankees or Red Sox maybe.

He is not great, but he is above average, and I am not saying that because I "been watching Gonzo for a year and half"
