Apparently it will buy you something to ***** about constantly.![]()
I know it gets old, but it's a damn joke that he literally cannot play three games in a row. I used to think it was a (sports) tragedy the way Murphy went out, crashing and burning right before the team got good, but at least he didn't hang on too long and cripple the team's budget because he didn't have the sack to know when he was done.
How can you blame Chipper for signing the deal though? I've heard him freely admit that he was somewhat shocked by the Braves willingness to extend his contract for as many years as they did. Everybody knows the deal was a lifetime achievement award and in some ways paying him back for the hometown discount in 2000.
Heck, if he truly was hanging on for the sake of hanging on, it seems like he'd come back next year to finish out the contract and get paid.
That's the leader of the team and has had a few of the most important hits this young season.
I know he can still hit. The problem is that you have to evaluate his contract by taking 50 percent Chipper and 50 percent 25th stiff off the bench, because that's how the playing time works. And $14 million a year for that for a team that's only got $80 million a year to work with is a disaster.
