Atlanta Braves II

Then add back in the good luck of actually winning in 1995 against a Cleveland team that was probably better than the Braves. They could very easily have lost that series too, in which case they'd be remembered as the biggest playoff chokers of all time.

I'm looking at the game summary Game 4 of the 1996 WS. I think as a 19 year old, I would have killed myself.

That team had Lofton, Alomar, Ramirez, Thome, and Bell, no?

The Braves' philosophy was always to spend 80-90 percent of the payroll on about six or seven guys -- four starters and two or three big bats. They treated much of the lineup, the bench, and the bullpen as revolving doors. And I don't think there's much doubt that it cost them wins in the playoffs.

And obviously, I don't think they've learned much since then.

Kinda sounds like today's team LOL.

GAVol and I were both there in the stands. It was a disaster. I had a 104 degree fever with the flu and got in a fight on MARTA afterwards with a Yankee fan in front of my mom.

That sounds like a horrible, horrible night.

Never go to another Braves WS game Vercy!

Make it stop.

That's not even in the top 10. Maybe top 20. I had to think for a second to remember the details.

Games 6 and 7 of the 1991 series. Game 4 of the 1996 series. The Livan Hernandez game. The endless extra inning game in Houston in 2005 (?). There's five off the top of my head and I haven't even thought about it yet.

That's them. Good pitching too. I thought at the time that if they played that series 10 times, Cleveland would win six or seven.

Looking at them now. Holy ****, that lineup was murderer's row. They even had EDDIE MURRAY!

I expected to win the four WS that the Braves lost, and I expected them to lose the one they won. Crapshoot.

I still think the best Braves team of that whole run was probably in 1993, and they didn't even play in the WS at all. They did win the Last Real Pennant Race though.

I actually know the Last Real Pennant Race! The Braves and Giants both won 100+ games and Braves won by one game yes?

An underrated awful game that you never hear anybody talk about was Game 3 against the Yankees in 1998. The Braves were down 2-0 in the series but led the whole game with a chance to get back into it......and then Glavine was inexplicably sent back out there in the 8th inning and gave up a homer to tie, and then the Yankees won it win another homer in extra innings to go up 3-0. The next game is when Smoltz went out there with his sidearm delivery but it was already over.

Yes. The Giants won 103 games and missed the playoffs. It was unbelievable. If that happened now, both teams would be resting starters down the stretch and setting up their rotations.

When the Dodgers won to eliminate the Giants, you'd have thought they won the title themselves. It was great.

And the stadium caught on fire.

Man I can't wait till this season gets into pennant races and playoffs (assuming we are atleast involved in some kind of race).

If Heyward and Freddie continue to hit, we are looking good. Minor/Beachy are being legit pitching threats, Hanson is healthy, Hudson looked good. The bullpen (at the moment) is doing well health wise.

I like Francisco, but he's being used incorrectly. He's Eric Hinske: Spot start guy, pinch hitting power guy off the bench, can play multiple positions, even get a few starts for a DL guy. But I think this is the 3rd time he has started against lefties. He's on pace to get 60 starts, which is 25 too many. We need another bench bat.

What we need is Omar Infante...too bad that's not happening.

The thing I don't get about it is this: the Braves already know that they're going to have a hole in CF next year, and there's nobody in the minors who can even theoretically handle it. So they know they're going to have to make a move by spring 2013. So why not go ahead and make that move now, so it can help you this year too? Trade one of the top pitching prospects as part of some kind of package to get a decent young CF. He can play LF this year when Chipper's out, then next year slide back over to CF and all you've got to fill is either LF or 3B. What's the point of waiting when you already know you're going to have to make a trade?

Uh...I wish I knew.

Alright, let's just put this to bed.

Unless Liberty Media does something completely uncharacteristic, Mike Bourn is not going to be an Atlanta Brave in 2013, nor is he negoitiating with Atlanta during the 2012 year.

I'm starting to consider a possible quandry for Atlanta:

Right now, Andrelton Simmons is tearing up Mississippi, batting .321/.383/.434 and his exceptional defense.

Tyler Pastornicky (before tonight) .262/.318/.393

Let's say both players keep up their pace towards mid-June, and Jack Wilson continues his suckitude. Could Atlanta possibly make Simmons the starting SS, and then move Pastor T to super utility?
