Atlanta Braves II

It's total speculation, obviously, but it does feel like he and Boras are both sending up pretty overt smoke signals that they want the Braves to be involved. I think he hopes to come back here. It's just impossible to see it happening.

Boras isn't stupid; he knows that the Braves' tendency is going to be to dismiss out of hand the possibility of bringing Bourn back just because he's a Boras client. Thus all the (relatively speaking) mating behavior on their part.

Well, since we are being old ladies and doing a little gossip, Boras does essentially work for Bourn so if Bourn has stated that he is interested in staying in Atlanta for whatever reason then Boras would be an idiot to try and confront Bourn at this time with what he really thinks/knows. Let's be honest here, no front office in baseball mentions Boras and immediately follows with a smile. He's not exactly popular, but at the same time the front offices know in well to not ignore him at the same time. He has and will continue to put very large dents in club player salaries.

This is just the standard politics that comes with the territory. The object of the game presently is not do anything, absolutely nothing, that diminishes a given individuals perceived value on or off the field. You keep the talk very level and boring. Now is not the time to start rocking the boat. You keep it all very sanitized and monotonous.

When Boras is your agent, the tail sort of wags the dog. Players know that going in. You hire Boras because he the guy who will extract every last dollar possible from the process for you. In general, Boras only wants to represent clients who will attack the free agent process aggressively. I guess it's possible that Michael Bourn could fall in love with the Braves and want to stay, but he would come under heavy pressure from Bourn to open it up to bidding on the open market before signing an extension here. Regardless of who ostensibly works for whom.

Which is exactly how Boras and Teixeira handled it a couple of years ago. That's why I find it interesting that Boras has already had at least a couple of public quotes about how this is a great situation for Bourn and how comfortable he is here. There was nothing like that with Teixeira.

I'm not sure I would want Bourn for a long term deal. I'm weary of guys who rely so much on speed entering their 30s. Of course I'd prefer ownership that spends more, but when you are on a tight budget, you can't give up long term deals for non-prime players.

Agree with all this. The back end of Bourn's contract is going to be risky. Signing him to a long-term contract is a poor risk.

It would be nice, however, to have an ownership that could say screw it, we have a really nice window opening up. Who cares if the last two years end up being a bad value?

43 innings pitched, 53 hits, 13 walks. Yet only a 2.47 ERA. Fluke.

EDIT: Ah, I see he pitched tonight though. Still, 10 baserunners in 9 innings. Fluke.

Ground ball pitchers give up a lot of hits though. I haven't checked his WHIP but I am sure it is low. Either way, big difference. Dude can't pitch in the south IMO. For the record, I think it is a fluke as well though

Coming into tonight, it was 1.5. It was actually higher than it was last year in Atlanta. Fluke. He still sucks.

It is possible that he too has found some German fountain of youth, which could restore him all the way up to average for a half a season or so. But even that's a stretch.

His luck will probably run out at about the same time the Braves finally get off the hook for the rest of his salary.

I don't know if you're kidding about Pie or not. I wish it weren't feasible enough for it to even be in question.

I'm 100 percent convinced that as of this moment he's the failsafe option.

How would you like a little Myke Jones and Felix Pie platoon next year Verc?

Constanta, Pie, Heyward. Boom.

Hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to free up salary to sign Brian McCann to a lifetime contract. 10 years, $170 million is a small price to pay to lock up the best catcher in the league until he's 40.
