Atlanta Braves Thread - Francisco Cabrera edition

I knew Chipper was a slam dunk 1st ballot HOF’er but didn’t think he’d get the 11th highest percentage of all time.

Part of the issue with the HOF is there is so many players from the 20’s/30’s/40’s/50’s in there who were solid that it lowers the basis for the HOF. So you have people who make cases for Scott Rolen who was an excellent player but couldn’t stay healthy and only finished top 10 in MVP voting once but whose WAR outshines a lot of people who are currently in.

I mean let’s take Jim Thome and Johan Santana. Santana was the best LHP in baseball from 2004-2009. Was Thome ever a top ten position player in baseball? He never finished top three in MVP voting. At what point do we put elite years compared to overall numbers (Thome is a HOF for his ridiculous OBP throughout his career to me at least). Put shouldn’t Santana get credit for being the best player at his position for 5 years? Isn’t that more impressive than Jack Morris’ career or Blyleven’s career? How much should position matter? Part of what helps is Chipper player 3B compared to RF. If he played RF it’s probably not open and shut publicly.

But hey Curt Schilling can’t get in despite the highest K/BB ever for a starter, won a WS MVP, pitched one of the most iconic performance for a starter, broke THE CURSE, and has a 2 something ERA in 133 postseason IP’s because he’s a right wing conersative so who knows

I'm gonna guess that the reason Schilling isn't in has more to do with the fact that his three best seasons all came after the age of 34 than it does his politics. Cf. Roger Clemens.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything connecting Schilling to PED’s or voters mention that as a reason they don’t vote for him.

Maybe not. I have no idea what's in the minds of voters, but when any pro athlete starts getting better again in their mid 30s then it's pretty obvious what's up. Maybe for Schilling it's a combination of factors: Ahole + politics + suspicion of PEDS + no Cy Youngs or 300 wins = FU.

Pujols
Cabrera
Beltre
Cano
Trout

Only guaranteed HOF’s right now? Maybe one of Posey, Molina, and Mauer?

Verlander, King Felix, Sabathia, and Kershaw right now? Maybe Schrzer and Greinke with a couple more elite years?

Andruw was way better than Griffey defensively.

Votto *maybe*... And definitely ichiro, if he is still "active"

This, plus I would include McCutchen for the same exact reason that I would say Murphy should be a surefire hall of famer for the Braves. When you get right down to it, the hall of fame is a tourist attraction and a players impact on a team and city should override some of the arguments against it such as longevity, etc. If I one day take my son to Cooperstown I want McCutchen to be in there the same way Verc and Ga’s generation of Brave’s fans would want Murphy in there in that same scenario.

Hell, let’s just make it where if you make a large enough donation you can get anyone enshrined. Or just do participation enshrinements.

lol I do get what you’re saying here, but that’s why teams have “Hall of Fames” circle of honors etc.

When they allow you to sponsor enshrinements, I’m investing in all the lottery tickets. Then I’m going to win and put it all towards enshrining Bob Wickman. Rather than a bust, I’m going to enlist a sculptor to sculpt a massive Wickman statue out of chocolate, cheese, and other delicious chunks of delight.

dude, once again, a career sub 3 ERA is not equal to Andrew’s career pedestrian slash line.
