Sounds like we really lucked out with these freshman receivers.

Buddy of mine that works with the team said Johnson and Calloway look awesome.

Not to be too much of downer over here, but it seems like we have an awesome freshman wide out every year and they never put up numbers. Last year was Jennings, for example. Josh Smith, the year before.

I think it's a matter of just not being able to get them the ball.

Johnson and Calloway seem a little different because the catch everything. Preston Williams just seems like the prototype, IMO.

More to it than this, IMO. No one at that position has really developed. Passing game has been embarrassingly bad. You have to find a way to get them the ball. It's all on Azzanni, and to a lesser degree Butch.

We've seen Malone and Smith step up and make some huge plays, they just can't do it with any sort of consistency.

We need to get some semblance of a deep passing game.

And that's fine here and there but damn, they ran that chit in the ground. But at the time they had parking cones at the tackle spots the majority of the time. So yeah.

I think we need to use it. Even on successful passing plays downfield, there hasn't really been separation and space after the catch. Hopefully little screens can give the guys some space to work. Dobbs needs to have a better completion percentage than he did a year ago.

Trying to convince myself it'll look different. Maybe Croom and Wolf play well. Maybe better protection. Maybe aggressive offense finds some rhythm.

But I agree with the original comment about young WRs... Obviously you'd rather hear positive than negative (or nothing), but I think some of the raving over Johnson, Callaway, whoever is caused by a combination of Shiny New Thing, Need Production There, and People (read: us here on the boards) Want To Hear.

Since the Byrd hype started, I've been afraid that it's just 'wow what an athlete'... Which, while encouraging, doesn't do jack for us yet.

And that's not to say those guys are slaw. I think Byrd Callaway Johnson and Latrell can work. I also think Williams can. I just need to see it look different (we all do) before I think that a new athletic person is the cure.

Never one thing, obviously.

I could go the rest of my life without seeing another wide receiver screen. Could just be me, but my goodness it seems like they never netted more than a couple yards the majority of the time. Now, I am all for screens to Kamara. Just need to be more creative.

Part of me thinks... Use them, stay on pace with the chains, sets up some other stuff in the playbook. But... Elite run game can do that.

I really have no idea how the passing game will look.

Who knows, I hope Wolf up the seam becomes more of thing. He is so underrated/under used. I also hope Preston can finally be that deep threat.

I like Malone, but if he doesn't turn into Meachem quick, he is going to a bust.

Tyler Byrd will end up being the best WR of them all by the time he leaves UT. He is athletic, agile, fast, & dynamic. He will be taking over for Cam in the PR duties after next season. All I can see is look out!
